Personal Doctoral Narrative of Progression
This course is the first in a long journey towards earning my Doctor of Education. Completion of the first course has enabled me to develop and improve in many areas, while also allowing me to gain a clear understanding of the requirements for success. In addition to the growth and improvement I have encountered thus far, I am certain a great deal more will occur as I progress through this program. I believe that the best way to gain a thorough understanding of any topic is through action. I plan to take action in reviewing current research and implementing successful theories in my classroom in an effort to create positive changes in the educational field. For example, I have often experienced struggle in motivating students, and as a result the academic achievement of my students has somewhat declined. I will continue to research scholarly articles over improving student motivation and put recommended techniques into practice in my classroom. One cannot begin to be a good teacher, without respecting students as individuals and understanding that each student’s life experiences have shaped who they are. My personal philosophy of ethics affects my forward movement in my career as well as my goals because my ethics guide me on a daily basis. As a teacher, I respect my students, I see them as individuals, and they in turn respect me and work hard for me. I teach primarily troubled students with violent pasts. These students often have a poor reputation and other teachers in my school district have experienced great difficulty and little success in teaching these students. I treat these students with respect, kindness, and non-judgment and in turn, my students respect me and experience academic success. As I continue my education in pursuit of my doctorate, I will pass on my personal code of ethics and the positive experiences it has brought me to other teachers, and by doing so improve
Walking into Walnut Hills High School right now would have anyone thinking the just walked into the middle of a tornado. Everyone you look there are students running in and out of doors, in and out of cars, and most certainly either turning in missing assignments or retaking tests. There is only one way for you to explain all this ciaos, Senior Year, the year that all teens await with so much excitement and ambition and the year that every single hour long study dates pays off. For the class of 2021 this isn’t just their final year at Walnut Hills this is the year that friends separate and head off to their different university to follow their dreams.

Chris Zajac works as a fifth grade teacher at Kelly Elementary School, which contain many students from the same ethical background. This school may not seem like much but it is a very close representation of the problems within in the American schooling system. And even though Chris may not seen to be fit, in the task of fixing such a problem, her determination to her students shows otherwise. There is a quote, of contested origins, having no rightful owner. That quote is recited as follows: "Everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” While we stand in hindsight, we often look back upon where we came and what experiences brought us to the point we are now. My journey to higher education spans 24-years and combines two passions, teaching and EMS (emergency medical services). This journey began in 1986 with a suburban kindergarten class of 25 in Memphis, TN. Eleven years later no longer am I teaching school-age children; instead, I am delivering training programs to EMS providers as well as the medical community. Today, I combine both passions to offer students authentic experiences through which to obtain proficient skills in written and oral communications, critical and analytical thinking, problem solving, as well as in negotiation and conflict resolution skills as they prepare for rewarding
To be in the education profession one is signing up to be a trustworthy, knowledgeable, devoted, and understanding individual. They must guarantee equal opportunities for everyone. Their primary concern is their students' learning and potential. One has to “sustain the highest degree of ethical conduct” (1). Each year, as a new group of students enter my classroom, I will encourage them to be expressive of their imaginations in their favorite subjects, whether it be art, literature, math or music. We all have rules and regulations to follow, and each student will know that there is no exception in the school or the classroom. Another goal in my classroom will be to keep the students excited about learning, not to treat school as a game or a social event, but to encourage a unique and fun atmosphere to learn. My educational ethics toward each student will be to emphasise that everyone is an individual, they are all special and unique in their own way, and that every student does not learn on the same level. I hope my students will treat each other the way they want to be treated, and respect those that may be less fortunate.
Even with the abundance of research Gardner finds the true definition of success within doctoral education to be elusive. The author comments on several outcomes including grade point average, retention, degree completion, and professional competencies; as indicators of doctoral student success. While Gardner does not limit the importance of these indicators as signs to the success of a doctoral student. The author conveys that understanding of these indicators is needed to conceptualize success within doctoral education. My journey as a student has always been focused on the path to college and success. Before I even set foot in kindergarten my mother, a college dropout, always told me that “honor roll wasn’t an option” and that I would be attending college in the future and achieving a degree. Most of the time I made these requirements. Most of the time I was awarded honor roll or had a newly edited list of colleges to attend, but sometimes life got in the way of my dreams of achieving success.
Like many people, my personal experiences have shaped who I am. As a future educator, I want my students to respect me as a teacher, but understand that I will be there for every one of them, whenever they need me. I will not judge them; I will only encourage them to do their best. I will show them that learning can be fun and that school is more than just memorizing facts, it’s about opening your mind to new ideas and experiencing things that will change your
