In America everyone has the right to a free public education. States set standards for schools in an attempt at ensuring all students get the same quality education. No matter how many standards are set, students will not have equal schooling. Schooling is larger then the lessons taught in the classroom. Each student’s school experience is different, not only because of the quality of their education but because of things like school location, demographic, teachers, participation, and other person experiences. My school experience has helped define me as a person and has helped guide me through life. I attended a public school in Perry, Iowa. There was a small public school in my town, but it only taught through eighth grade, so everyone During high school I participated in dance team, football and basketball cheerleading, marching band, color guard, concert band, jazz band, pep band, choir, select choir, drama, Resistance Skills Leaders, National Honor Society, GSA, Skills, Big Buddy, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and speech. I always had something to do, and I enjoyed staying busy. Participating helped me find a place in school. In big school participating gives you a new group of friends. Perry is not very big, so everyone that I was on a team with, I already knew. Doing all of the extra curricular activities that I did, really helped me develop strong emotional bonds with many people that I knew. It taught me to encourage others and that positive reinforcement will always work better than punishments. It showed me that being a leader isn’t about because the person with all of the ideas or the most vocal person, but being the person that inspires others to be creative and help share their thoughts and to lead them in the right direction. Like many people, my personal experiences have shaped who I am. As a future educator, I want my students to respect me as a teacher, but understand that I will be there for every one of them, whenever they need me. I will not judge them; I will only encourage them to do their best. The issue of equality in education is not a new problem. In 1787, our federal government required all territories petitioning for statehood to provide free education for all citizens. I ended up going to the high school there for my final high school on my trip through the education system, but as luck would have it I was too old to graduate with a high school diploma which I thought was ridiculous I was only 19, but they ended up enrolling me into a GED course which sort of prepared me to take the test to get my GED. In this little town that we had moved to was also small and let’s just say that it was like Strathmore to Porterville. It was a little bit away and the only way to get there was by car. We lived way out on the sticks in a trailer park community, it was a nice community my uncle had lived there for many years.
Education supports everyone getting opportunities in life and being able to choose better for themselves. As Horace Mann wrote, education is the “great equalizer for all.“ However, the United States Public School system will likely never be able to equally educate its masses of students. Providing education to all citizens of the United States is a constitutional right. However we can see that throughout the history of American education, several people were unable or not allowed to receive the same level of education as others. The inequities and injustices for certain cultural subgroups are just as apparent today as they were when Horace Mann established the common schools in attempt to solve the cultural diversity of the time. Ideas about diversity and equity changed the ideology of schools based on national school reform which transformed schools to the contemporary schools of today. However, modern schools face many challenges; to name a few, a lack of funding, institutionalized prejudices, and the failure of differentiating curriculum because of standardized testing.
My education experiences are very uniquely different from the majority of college students. I was homeschooled for my entire life until I entered college. The only teacher I ever had was my mother and the only classroom I ever sat in was my kitchen table. Being homeschooled awarded me many distinctive opportunities that other students weren’t entitled to. It also meant that I was shielded from the parts of the education system that my mother didn’t agree with or support. For instance, I didn’t take graded tests and didn’t received grades on the essays I wrote. Instead when I took a test, I would help to check over it to understand any mistakes that were made. Similarly, the essays I wrote would be discussed and then often re-written as examples
In college, I will also be exposed to new clubs and activities. I feel that club and after school activities can make a person more involved and give a person the right qualities to become a leader. Involvement in extra events has provided a balance for rigorous course study. With the pressures that college brings, I will probably want to be involved in many groups.
Most people don’t see public schools as an issue. Reading through these readings I see that unfortunately our schools are failing some of our students. When reading A Place Called School Goodlad states, “Jencks went so far as to conclude that school reform could do little to reduce the extent of cognitive inequality among students. And he saw differences in schools as irrelevant in explaining differences in attainment among individuals” (pg.5). Clearly it says in the reading how some schools are not prepared to teach students. All schools need to have “equal education for all” which means giving all students the same equal education they deserve no matter what race or color they are. Every single student should have the opportunity to know about all the resources there are available in a public school because there are a lot more than people may think. In relation to equal education having the proper and same attention from the teacher is also part of it not only how they are being treated. I know that as I grow and learn as a teacher my theory on education will change and grow with me. I know that the best thing that I can bring to the table when it comes to being a teacher is the willingness to learn along with my students on what works best for us in our classroom, what is important to us when it comes to learning, and to change what needs to be change in order to have a positive learning environment for my student. Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
A good education has always been drilled into my head ever since I was a little girl. Boy did I hate that, all I wanted to do was goof off and have fun with my friends. But as the years went on I started to realize how important it was to have a good education. Not that that made me like school anymore than I did; but I was realizing the different ways I was learning and how different people taught. I remember saying one day, when I was a freshman in high school, that if I was teaching this class I would have never taught it that way. Unfortunately, my teacher overheard me and I was forced to go to the front of the room and explain to the class the way it should be taught since I knew so much about teaching. Needless to say I did an awful job of it. That is when I started thinking about becoming a teacher. I know that does not make sense because I did such an awful job and was humiliated doing it. I did not like the way that man taught and I was determined to take his job. However, the reason I am here today is not that I want to take a teacher’s job; it is because I have the desire to make a difference in the lives of many students. I hope I will be a good teacher so that I will never have to hear a student say something bad about my teaching.
High school it was, surrounded by people who are different in many ways but also confused with who they really are. A group of people who tended to be at the same stage in life according to Erickson’s psychosocial development. For me it was a bit challenging in regards to the fact that I felt alone being who I was. Everyone was caught up in a different lifestyle, so there existed many groups with peers who shared similar interest and having fun being who they rare. On the other hand, others trying to fit in. Being for the fact that they are different, perhaps they knew who they were but did not have peers who shared such similarities. I was among that group who was reserved, I became an introvert and felt lost so my ego pushed me to try and fit in.

Teachers may not make the most money or have the most respected profession, but it is a job that is always needed. Teachers have helped encourage so many of the world’s brightest people; so many people have admitted that they wouldn’t be where they are today without the support from that one special teacher. I want to be that special teacher, the one who goes the extra mile for her students and pushes them to be the best they can be. But most importantly, I want to be able to teach my students to be worldly and independent. For Robert Hutchins once said, “It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts…it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and to always think for themselves”.
Hearing their personal opinions on what is most valuable in education helped me to consider what I find most valuable in becoming the teacher I want to become. I realized that I value the students the most. They are the factor that changes every lesson plan and they are the ones that alter my classroom demands. Thus, it is how I interact with the students that becomes the factor in determining what kind of teacher I am to become. I was speaking with a friend the other day and he was telling me about his experience when he rode a horse for the first time. He recalled that it was when he was on the horse, weaving through neighbors’ yards and all across the streets (they were uncostly transporting the horse to its pasture 5 miles away) that he realized that there was no way for him to be prepared to ride that horse until he actually saddled it up and took the chance. Life is like this in many ways as plans change and people walk in and out of your life. We cannot ever be fully prepared for the kind of experiences that we are to face in the future, but we can have an agenda of who we want to aspire to be. We are given agency so that we can act rather than be acted upon. We can accomplish excellence and furthermore help others, including students, to also accomplish
Extracurricular activities can benefit students greatly through their personal lives and well being. According to Justin Coulson in his article on kidspot.com, students that are involved in extracurricular activities, such as sports or clubs, are generally healthier than those who do not participate. Extracurricular activities can help raise student’s self esteem and self awareness as stated by Joy Burgess in her article, “Extracurricular School Activities and the Benefits” at more4kids.info. Being involved allows the student to learn about the skills and talents they already have and can teach them new ones such as time management, organization, and prioritizing skills. The ensuing journey is one that can be influential to students as they are allowed the chance to navigate and make choices for themselves. I would be a good teacher because I relinquish some control in order to allow the students to mature on their own. This added responsibility is beneficial for the students in their growth, but also allows the students' individuality to be showcased. When done carefully, self esteem and confidence grows, as does the feeling of community within the classroom. I have found that knowing students on an individual basis is the key to helping them reach their potential. As the whole student is taught, issues regarding discipline are better handled and the classroom becomes an arena where students begin to feel comfortable taking risks.
