Every Wednesday, I walk to work along Sheridan Road off the Lawrence Red Line stop. Each Wednesday, without fail, there is a man, disheveled and seemingly dejected, sitting in his wheelchair in the middle of my path. The first thing I notice is that he is missing a foot and the empty pant leg dangles over the dirty wheels. As I pass, he will sometimes ask for money, while mumbling unintelligibly, or just stares at the ground until I walk past him. This sad scene evokes a rising concern in me that emerges every time I see another suffering human. However, how many times have I given this man money or words of support? Humans have almost always had the ability to feel what each other is feeling. However, empathy is a relatively new term that stems from the German word Einfühlung. By the 19th century, most humans were starting to become aware of this aspect of human nature that compassionate and perspective-taking come from, according to the book “Empathy and Its Development”. There are two types of empathy: affective and cognitive. Affective empathy refers to our despondence to other people’s mental state, such as feeling sympathy when seeing a starving child on television. Cognitive Empathy is human’s ability to understand different perspectives and mental states. Rather than helping for the sake of self-interest or heroic recognition, scientists now argue that both forms of empathy are an integral part to humanity. Without empathy, it would be challenging to relate to others, thus dehumanizing others and promoting the causes for violence. In the Ted Talk “The Empathic Civilization”, Jeremy Rifkin states, “All humans are soft-wired with mirror neurons so that, if I 'm observing you, your anger, your frustration, your sense of rejection, your joy, whatever it is, and I can feel what you 're doing, the same neurons will light up in me as if I 'm having that experience myself”. One of most anti-war paintings in the world is “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso, which illustrates scenes of horror during the bombing of Guernica, a village in the north of Spain during the Spanish Civil war. The painting itself is a montage of grotesque figures screaming in agony while being stabbed, holding their dead child, or their limbs being severed from their bodies. Since its first exhibition, “Guernica” has gained status as a symbol of peace and the tragedy of war. People elevated this painting to world-wide popularity because they “witnessed” how ugly and terrible war can be even if they never heard of Guernica, Spain. For most centuries, war was something that happened, but always seemingly removed from the “innocents”. War was a game for powerful leaders and men to play out on their battlefields far from their homes (though of course, many civilians were usually caught up in these spats). Guernica challenged the popular “distancing” attitude of the majority of the world who had never personally been in a war. People saw themselves in the “innocents” being slaughtered in the painting by outlandish animal figures and spears. They realized that war is a nightmare that could become a reality to anyone of them. George Gittoes (b.1949) creates works that that communicate the issue of the graphic horror of war. A social realist painter, photographer and filmmaker, his approach to art is that ‘he layers and accumulates material until, out of apparent chaos, there is a synthesis of idea, passion and image’ (Mendelssohn, 2014). As an eyewitness to the world's war zones, Gittoes clearly uses his work as a means of communication to society.

It is used to help others learn and decide on matters that would not be reasonable without feelings attached to them. Compassion is a feeling that humans portray towards others, but you also have to act in some way to aid them and to decrease their suffering. Barbara Lazear Ascher's purpose “On Compassion” of her essay was to distinguish emotions that people feel towards homeless people. She posed the question of whether or not people feel compassion or pity towards homeless people. The thesis statement is the first sentence, which encompasses the main themes that compassions revolves around somebody’s circumstances, rather than a situation that one can dream about. Tim O’Brien states in his novel The Things They Carried, “The truths are contradictory. It can be argued, for instance, that war is grotesque. But in truth war is also beauty. For all its horror, you can’t help but gape at the awful majesty of combat” (77). This profound statement captures not only his perspective of war from his experience in Vietnam but a collective truth about war across the ages. It is not called the art of combat without reason: this truth transcends time and can be found in the art produced and poetry written during the years of World War I. George Trakl creates beautiful images of the war in his poem “Grodek” but juxtaposes them with the harsh realities of war. Paul Nash, a World War I artist, invokes similar images in his paintings We are Making a New World and The Ypres Salient at Night. Guilaume Apollinaire’s writes about the beautiful atrocity that is war in his poem “Gala.”

Burton defines empathy as the ability to not only recognize but also to share another person’s or a fictional character’s or a sentient beings’ emotions. It involves seeing a person’s situation from his or her own perspective and then sharing his or her emotions and distress (1). Chismar posits that to empathize is basically to respond to another person’ perceived state of emotion by experiencing similar feelings. Empathy, therefore, implies sharing another person’s feeling without necessary showing any affection or desire to help. For one to empathize, he or she must at least care for, be interested in or concerned about
Empathy is imperative to teach kids from a young age in order to help them recognize mental states, such as thoughts and emotions, in themselves and others. Vital lessons, such as walking in another’s shoes or looking at a situation in their perspective, apprehends the significance of the feelings of another. Our point of view must continuously be altered, recognizing the emotions and background of the individual. We must not focus all of our attention on our self-interest. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Compassion and empathy inspire change in a society whether it be changing individual’s usual way of thinking, uniting, or accepting those who are different. Individuals can use their compassion for something to cause a change in someone else’s thought of that thing. Several people have used empathy to bring others feelings together. People can also use empathy to show others to have acceptance towards ones who may not be like themselves.
Empathy is one of the great mysteries of life. Why do people feel empathy? Do others deserve empathy? Is feeling empathy a strength or weakness? These questions may forever go unanswered, or they may not even have an answer. Even if they are answered, they may only be speculation. One author shows his take on the matter with one of his books. In The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien uses Gollum and Thorin to show that people do deserve empathy, no matter how horrible they may be.

This particular skill requires one to walk around in someone else’s shoes. It is a very valuable emotional skill that develops in many characters during the course of the novel. To be able to understand how empathy works between a certain group of people, it is necessary to know what empathy means. I found an interesting definition of empathy, as a crucial component of the helping relationship, a need to understand people ' distress, and to provide supportive interpersonal communication. Empathy is the ability to recognize the emotions of others. Empathy does not mean that we live other people’ emotions, but it means that we understand other people ' emotions from our experiences. Guernica is one of Pablo Picasso’s most well-known paintings in the world. It was created in response to the bombing of Guernica by German and Italian warplanes on April 26 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. The intention that Picasso had was to depict the scenes of the tragedies of the war and the loss of innocent lives. This terrible event was shown to us in the painting as Picasso utilized a number of symbolic images through the helplessness of the many faces and how war brings upon destruction and grief.

Every child’s development is distinctive, multipart, and complex. Development comes to pass in five areas. SPICE refers to the five areas of development that all children share. Social, physical, intellectual, creative, and emotional equals SPICE (Early childhood education). Erik Erikson developed a theory of development that considers the impact of external factors from infancy to later life. So, when thinking about early childhood education the one detail that comes to mind is development. Emotional-social development is one aspect of development that is greatly influenced by factors in the environment and the experiences a child has.
