I want my education to be meaningful and something to enrich the lives of others. My hopes are to be set on the path where, through real-world experiences, service trips, and relationships with students and faculty, I can be allowed to experiment with different types of organizations and discover what to expect in the field to find the best fit for me. Hearing their personal opinions on what is most valuable in education helped me to consider what I find most valuable in becoming the teacher I want to become. I realized that I value the students the most. They are the factor that changes every lesson plan and they are the ones that alter my classroom demands. Thus, it is how I interact with the students that becomes the factor in determining what kind of teacher I am to become. I was speaking with a friend the other day and he was telling me about his experience when he rode a horse for the first time. He recalled that it was when he was on the horse, weaving through neighbors’ yards and all across the streets (they were uncostly transporting the horse to its pasture 5 miles away) that he realized that there was no way for him to be prepared to ride that horse until he actually saddled it up and took the chance. Life is like this in many ways as plans change and people walk in and out of your life. We cannot ever be fully prepared for the kind of experiences that we are to face in the future, but we can have an agenda of who we want to aspire to be. As I read these articles, I agreed with almost everything that was said. The Great Teacher Question: Beyond Competencies, by Edward R. Ducharme begins with a sentence that basically sums up my reason for teaching, “I begin this essay by defining a great teacher as one who influences others in positive ways so that their lives are forever altered” (Ducharme, 1991 p. 2). Over the course of a student’s education they will have many teachers, but there are maybe only one or two who are THE teacher. The teacher who impacts this child’s life in a positive way forever. As Christian educators, our goal is to prepare students to listen and obey God’s voice. Our job revolves around applying principles and utilizing curriculum which enables us to do so. As an educator, I should know the content I teach and be dedicated to mastering all the skills and knowledge needed to connect the student with the subject matter. I need to have a strong biblical base. This paper discusses my beliefs of a Biblical philosophy of education and my personal application of this philosophy in the Kindergarten classroom.
Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Philosophy of Christian Education A Christian philosophy of education is one of the cornerstones for a successful Christian school, which gives more than just academic knowledge, it gives an education of the heart. A good education has always been drilled into my head ever since I was a little girl. Boy did I hate that, all I wanted to do was goof off and have fun with my friends. But as the years went on I started to realize how important it was to have a good education. Not that that made me like school anymore than I did; but I was realizing the different ways I was learning and how different people taught. I remember saying one day, when I was a freshman in high school, that if I was teaching this class I would have never taught it that way. Unfortunately, my teacher overheard me and I was forced to go to the front of the room and explain to the class the way it should be taught since I knew so much about teaching. Needless to say I did an awful job of it. That is when I started thinking about becoming a teacher. I know that does not make sense because I did such an awful job and was humiliated doing it. I did not like the way that man taught and I was determined to take his job. However, the reason I am here today is not that I want to take a teacher’s job; it is because I have the desire to make a difference in the lives of many students. I hope I will be a good teacher so that I will never have to hear a student say something bad about my teaching.
“To teach is to touch lives forever” is a popular phrase that teachers like to be reminded of. I know this because they almost all have it framed on their desk, up on their walls on posters, or have a t-shirt with the theme on it. Another is “To teach a child is to change the world.” I haven’t been a teacher, but I work with children and with children’s health at The Little Gym, and I volunteer at the homeless center’s children’s activity room. I can’t say that I’ve touched or changed their lives, but I know that they’ve changed my view on love more than anything else has.
This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. To this day, becoming a teacher is a passion that flows through me. However, my enthusiasm and passion are not the only reasons I would be a good teacher. I aspire to see a student’s ability to grasp the knowledge they never before understood. I aspire to see a student succeed at something they never thought they ever could. I aspire to not only support students with academic skills, but also with life lessons about the value of community, pride in one’s own ethnicity, good citizenship, sportsmanship, and more. I aspire to play a fundamental role in ensuring that all students from all cultures and learning abilities have the opportunity to be guided in a positive learning
I could go on at length, discussing all aspects of my praxis as an educator, however, that would lead to a paper of excruciating length. These aspects of my teaching pedagogy that are delivered in this praxis statement are those that I feel strongest about upholding. It is important for educators to value their students and the perspectives and cultures they bring to the classroom. Student-centered education is what I find to be the key to great teaching, and overall, is the greatest way to allow students to value and grow through their own self-exploratory and self-directed education. Valuing and appreciating each of your students is what makes teaching such an enlightening, uplifting profession.
The second teacher who influenced me was my grandmother. Although, I never studied under my grandmother, I was fortunate enough to see her in action as I grew up. She has been an educator for as long as I’ve been alive and for 40 plus years, she’s always been student-facing and has thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. She’s enjoyed it so much that she has yet to retire. This is the type of career that I seek to obtain, and teaching is where I will find this passion.
As we reminisce and reflect back either on our childhood or academic career, we tend to have that one teacher who was memorable to us in some way - for their sense of humor, their stellar personality, or perhaps having that charisma and charm no other teacher had to make a difficult subject and it 's concepts fun to learn. While knowledge is power, I firmly believe that it is rather the exchange and distribution of knowledge that is power. When one can educate the masses there is no doubt that together we can accomplish great things. Becoming a teacher would mean the opportunity to be able to witness the shaping and molding of the minds of the future generations and the satisfaction knowing that you have helped your students set themselves onto the right path and provide guidance towards the creation of a better tomorrow. Choosing to become a teacher will allow me not only to educate my students, but also educate myself to be a better teacher throughout my career. “Never underestimate the impact of a good mentor.” The power of this saying has resonated with me for a long time; something about its message keeps reminding me that parts of me today are what inspired by my teachers who did not only enlighten but also guide me through their experience. Coming into the teaching profession not knowing a lot, I was able to use previous experience from previous teachers to understand how important it is to understand whether or not students really understand the subject being taught. Having a passion to teacher also improves how much work teachers have to put into to make sure students understand. Growing up, I had the opportunity to experience what it was like to have a teacher was passionate about mathematics. This particular opportunity showed me how much effect he was able to put on his students performance, but most importantly how much effort he had to put into things to see a change in his students work.

We shouldn't judge a person on how educated they are based only on test scores. The most educated person may not be the most suitable person to teach children. I may lack the test scores, however, I do not lack the passion and motivation needed to be a great teacher. If we cannot celebrate small successes, the final outcome is less weighted.
