Many skilled educators never journey beyond the Master's level in education. Before you take the plunge into the highest level of education, there are many factors to consider. This paper explores some of the benchmarks for the doctoral candidate. Also, this paper considers the features that a quality doctoral school offers.
The Doctoral Journey
Almost all teachers, certainly all public school teachers who want to obtain tenure, will seek and complete a master's level of study in the subject that they are teaching, or in education. This is not a benchmark to measure teachers by, but a requirement in all of America's public school districts. Not all will continue to a doctoral study. Many teachers find satisfaction with their economic, career and development without pursuing a doctorate. There are important benchmarks of doctoral study to consider before beginning.
First, in today's uncertain job market, obtaining a doctoral degree does not guarntee employment at a higher level, or higher pay. Secondly,
a doctoral journey can be a long process, with many benchmarks for the students' dissertation to satisfy. Many students have left dissertations in progress and unfinished, because job and familiy committments have been a higher priority.

McClintock states “Scholar Practitioners are committed to the well-being of clients and colleagues, to learning new ways of being effective, and to conceptualizing their work in relation to broader organizational, community, political, and cultural contexts.” From McClintock’s model, the Scholar-Practitioner is described as a scholar who has an intimate understanding of their specialty and are able to apply their knowledge in several ways. Capella’s Learning Model also differentiates the Scholar-Practitioner and describing them in that same fashion. The Capella’s Learning Model provides in depth examples of a Doctoral-Level (Scholar-Practitioner) assignment. In the assignment, terms such as extract and evaluate, demonstrate the higher level thinking required as a Scholar-Practitioner. Bloom’s Taxonomy also identifies terms such as evaluate and create as higher thinking processes. An expert, the Scholar-Practitioner, is able to put together information in innovative ways and think outside of the box, versus recalling information. My first year in the doctoral program challenged me with newfound learning in an exciting environment. I am so pleased I learned new concepts and principles about leadership. Amazingly, I retained the information better because the year involved practical work. I am grateful for the experience because I was introduced to skills applicable to my life. As I reflect on the years learning, I could not be more excited about what is to come next.
How does the rising cost of college tuition affect us? Every year thousands of students attend a college or university, usually of their choice, with the goal of achieving a higher education and to better their future. The cost of attending college is too high and it needs to go down; there needs to be more scholarship and grant opportunities. The high cost of attending college is a major reason that students aren’t able to achieve higher education; others take this as a challenge and it is motivation for them to work harder to achieve their goal. One might ask why would someone want to spend money to receive more education and miss out on more years of work that they could’ve performed? For many, it is so they can receive more salary for the jobs that they will have later in life, also so that they can get training for their wanted career. The cost of attending college is high and continues to rise without indications of decreasing. The rising cost has many benefits such as earning more pay, but it also has its disadvantages such as the debt that is accumulated from student loans. Not everyone can afford to drop down thousands of dollars and attend school for a few more years. Students who wish to receive a post-secondary education must decide whether it is the right choice for them depending on their financial standpoint, meaning that they must decide if they have the resources to further their education.

This chapter discussed the reflection on the project and the wider implications of the project, and demonstrated the reflection on the MA experience. In a word, the major project and the MA experience gave me an extraordinary chance to carry on the higher education and learn new and advanced learning skills.
