Introduction Professional development, in its most simple definition, is learning opportunities. Under professional development, individuals are open to a wide array of these opportunities in order to gain knowledge and improve. The learning opportunities that make up professional development take up many forms. Conferences that aim to teach new skills and methods, formal pieces of academic material, training methods provided by an external or internal organizations are all learning opportunities through which professional development is attained. Professional development is a continuous process, that requires adapting to new techniques and approaches to improve a person’s technical capabilities. The National Staff Development Council (2009) shed more light on professional development in education. The definition put out by the NSDC (2015) in a proposed modification to the elementary and secondary education act, states that professional development is “a comprehensive, sustained and intensive approach to improving …show more content…
It provides the fundamental and advanced knowledge needed to improve the well-being of a country. Education is critical to the development of a country’s youth, as the popular saying goes, children are the future. The education received from teachers can either leave a lasting impact or have little or no effect on understanding. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation asserted that there is a need for “new paradigms, new practices and new people” (as cited in Holaday et al, 2007, 99). Standard 3 of the Standards is included in the domain of professional practice and its main aim is to ensure that effective teaching and learning occurs through focusing on comprehensive planning and goal-setting, teaching strategies, the use of resources, evaluation and communication with students and parents (Aitsl.edu.au, 2014a). Professional practice is made up of the knowledge, skills and practices required by teachers to meet the needs of their students (Zammit, 2007).
I already knew the basis of what professionalism was, but in this class, it went details, examples, and scenarios, instead of just the broad description. The most important reason public schools provide an excellent education is that teachers are required to be highly qualified and suited for the job. When asked if public schools were a wise investment for the government Barnard answered,” Yes, not every parent [very few in fact] are trained and suited to educate students”” (Barnard). A successful educator must be taught effective instructional strategies that convey content in a manner that students can understand. One can learn to be an effective teacher, and teaching skills can always be enhanced in a way that increases student learning. Professional development is a powerful tool for improving teachers’ instructional practices and raising student achievement, however it can only be beneficial when essential characteristics are present.
There is no more critical role in our current society than that of a teacher’s. Teachers help shape the minds of the future. Tomorrow's engineers, scientists, politicians, and educators are all greatly influenced by today's instructors. Without teachers society would not be anywhere near where it is now, and only a select few would have access to learning. Sadly however important teachers are in human civilization, they are still drastically understated, unrecognized and under paid.
Through the support of the professional development program, the effectiveness of the teachers enhances the quality of instruction and increases the student achievement and learning. The delivery of professional development program leads to alterations in professional learning, leading to changes in professional practice, which ultimately impact student achievement.

Danielson and Garmston expressed the need for teachers to continue to learn new skills, show professionalism, and complete self-reflection. The teacher, as a role model, must demonstrate a love for learning by continuing to grow and develop. Students will learn to be life-long learners when their teacher demonstrates the same skill.
Continuing professional development (CPD) means that professionals participate in learning activities to further improve the quality of their learning and develop their abilities and to update their learning continuously. It enables them to set goals and work to achieve them, so going above and beyond any initial training. Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
Based on the inquiry of empowering professional development, many findings come into play. At times we feel as though professional development is worthless and a waste of time. Gusky also, addresses that at times why so many professional developments are inadequate. There are reasons why we feel that way and reasons of which we should not have if we were actually getting something out the workshops. A common goal must first be set in the mind of the participants thus leading to the building of professionalism of the school system. In this review we will look at some aids and guides to successful professional development.
I have been a teacher for fifteen years, worked in two different school districts, and I have attended many professional development classes. I have had both positive and negative experiences from professional development.

Clinical specialization in physical therapy necessitates advanced knowledge, skill, and experience in a specialized area of practice (American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties [ABPTS], n.d.a). The enhancement of the patient’s outcome by improving the clinical reasoning skills of the physical therapists is the main motivation behind the pursuit of an expanded role (Yardley et al., 2008). In 1976, the House of Delegates of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) approved the notion of specialization and created the Task Force on Clinical Specialization (ABPTS, n.d.b). President George Bush’s “No Child Left Behind Act” fails to focus on the recruitment and diversity within the profession. He sets a goal for the year 2005 for every classroom to have a quality teacher but no goal for retaining these teachers. The improvement of the profession requires a national step-by-step effort. The purpose of this paper was to gather and explore information on the teaching profession and with it explore the shortage within in order to educate and strike up reform. It is clear, that reform will require a lot of time and money. The end product however, will show success within the profession thereby equaling success in the classroom. Success comes when present in the classrooms are caring and committed teachers, all with the goal of education and diversity is among them. .
