I have been a teacher for fifteen years, worked in two different school districts, and I have attended many professional development classes. I have had both positive and negative experiences from professional development.
My first job was in an inner city school where every teacher had to have 45 hours of professional development each year. The article "7 Profound Professional Development Questions for Administrators", talks about choice and how it carves our own destiny when it comes to professional development. This is what my school district did. They gave us a choice on what we wanted to attend. There was a wide variety of classes to chose from. Using cartoons in the classroom, using Microsoft Word, analyzing content standards, lifeguard certification, and geoboards are just a few classes I remembered that were offered. I didn 't have a problem attending any of the classes but, as a first year teacher I was excited to learn and improve my teaching. I did not realize how much extra time 45 hours is. As a veteran teacher, 45 hours is a lot of hours to put in, especially for teachers of have children who are involved in extra curricular activities.

I want to give the teachers a choice. I want to provide them with techniques, websites, and other resources that can help engage students in learning. I do not want to force anyone to use a technique or teach a certain way because it is the newest fad. I believe that this is the main key to break down the barriers of the dreaded professional development. There will be teachers who do not want to go to any but there will be teachers who do and share the information with the teachers who do not. Whenever I learn something new that I find useful, I always share with my colleagues. Even through this class, I have shared information with my colleagues. Paperrater was one that I shared. The information shared doesn 't have to be used much but it is a resource that can be helpful. If a teacher can take one thing learned and apply it to their classroom makes professional development

Every video I watched displayed tools that I could use in my own classroom. The instructional strategies and models used in the classrooms were great. My current teaching philosophy about instructional strategies and models would be that they are great to use. As a teacher, looking for ways to help teach certain lessons is a must. Every teacher found different ways to teach the materials to their students. It is always great to have resources in the classroom to look back on. Students love to have resources to guide them. In the video (Case #1112), I would emulate their strategy by letting my students use a textbook. I feel that textbooks are reliable sources and can be used to validate certain materials. In the video, you can tell that the students were using the textbook as a tool to prove their discussion with each other. In the video (Case #876), I would avoid assessing my students in whole-group discussion. I would have my student in groups to see how they communicate with each t=other about our discussion. Seeing my students evaluating each other’s opinions would be a great way into assessing their knowledge about the lesson. A classroom environment I would like to teach in would be with students who are ready to ask questions. Students who are not afraid to express their thoughts about the instruction. Nurses need a seat at the table to ensure they have a voice to influence and shape their future. Nursing is constantly evolving and changing, and employers continue to raise the bar for nursing. Nurses understand early in their career the importance of continuing education to enhance future career opportunities. Professional development relates to how nurses continue to broaden their knowledge, skills, and expertise throughout their career, therefore enhancing their professional practice. According to (Collin et al 2012), CPD is a diverse and multifaceted subject because all formal and informal learning and development within and outside their work place can be termed as CPD. Similarly, APM 2008 classified CPD activities in project management into (i) Formal CPD activities and (ii) Informal CPD activities; some of which are summarized in table 1 below:
The PD program does increase the capacity of faculty because we learn new strategies for learning and engaging learners. By looking at data, faculty is able to align their instruction to the school’s vision and mission. Twice a month (at least) all faculty attend the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) training workshops. These are geared towards instruction, district initiatives, and student achievement. Professional Development is provided for teachers to assist them with the required materials to guarantee all students obtain highly quality instruction.
Professional development is a component of being a highly effective teacher. Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
