Having professionalism immediately sets you apart from everyone else. You have the early child care experience, education, and still thrive to continue your education and learn even after you’ve finished school and have gotten your degree. Having professionalism is important because if parents are need of a child care program, they will looking for programs that serve quality care and education to their children, and the best way to have a quality care center is to continue development and research, staying up to date, and providing the best for the children that attend the center.
Professionalism is also important because it benefits young children. These children will have teachers who provide a curriculum that has been advanced, and is up to current standards. Which is important, because research will always continue with the latest practices and skills. Professionalism is important for teachers, because they become self-assured and ready to handle anything that may come their way. It helps them solve problems they may face, and they know that their work won’t fail and is dependable.

My definition of professionalism has changes before attending this class.
I already knew the basis of what professionalism was, but in this class, it went details, examples, and scenarios, instead of just the broad description. Before this class, I knew that professionalism was providing children the best quality education, and to continue learning. After being in this class, I learned many things relating to professionalisms, such as how to work with others, how to solve problems, how to implement work, how to communicate in a positive and practical way. I also learned traits a teacher with professionalism has, how to become independent, a leader, creative, respect others, and their privacy, having a positive image, and to continue growing as a
teacher. Professionalism and ethics connect with one another because they both believe that having more than the minimum education and care is important and is worth implementing in the classroom environment of your center. They both know that having a quality program has its benefits for everyone within the community, including parents, teachers, and children. They both use NAEYC as a guide, and look up it to help them with any scenario. Professionalism and ethics connect in the fact that it used for every staff in the center, and benefits and influences the lives of the staff, children, and families. Being a professional influences how a person carries out their roles and responsibilities, through having a hopeful and optimistic mindset and approach throughout the day, being flexible and a team player with work, situations that might occur, and with colleagues. Professionals seek out information, and make it work, they communicate effectively when faced with problems, they take action and try to find a resolution, and take responsibility in their work and actions. Core competencies relate to professionalism because core competencies support the fact that everyone should be professional in their work, and that professionals experience three levels of professionalism: entry level, experienced level, and advanced level professionalism. It also gives ways to become a professional, such as making relationships families, being educated in child growth and development, and doing appropriate and useful observations and assessments on children.
One of the first steps in of professionalism is dress; I make sure I am always dressed both professionally and comfortably for our classroom setting. For example if I know we are going to the Playscape, I wear either closed toed tennis or water shoes so I can get down and dirty and interacting with the children, really exploring the landscape. If I am wearing a dress I am conscious of how I sit or even go at step further and wear leggings underneath just so I don’t have to be worried. Another aspect of professionalism in the classroom is language. I always use appropriate language when speaking to the children, parents and my coworkers. Confidentiality is also a part of professionalism. Whenever I am taking notes or speaking of a child I am sure to keep it a confidential, I do not use names and am sure to only keep the information between the teaching team and I.
Professionalism can be defined as the competence of skills and principles of an individual in a profession. A professional must be knowledgeable in their profession, committed to improvement of one’s knowledge and skills, service oriented, covenantal relationships to patients/patrons, creative, innovative, ethical, accountable and a leader. Additional expected qualities that create the essentials of professionalism in relation to teaching are a high level of cognitive skills and social capabilities together with experienced personal qualities as stated by Marsh (2008) which include sensitivity, compassion, reflective and innovative thinking and commitment and dedication to the job. This support to facilitate such desired moral qualities as respect, caring, integrity, diligence and open communication as outlined by Groundwater-Smith (2009), the relationship of which is reinforced by Whitton (2009 p.47) in defining professionalism in teaching as being “…dependant of correct standards with the right conduct or practice”.
First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. Teachers are always trying to improve their own education and professional growth, both for the benefit of their students and for the benefit of themselves.
