My time observing was not only educational for me on how to become the teacher I desire to be, but as well as how to better myself as a student and improve my own learning. I observed some wonderful learning tools that I have since implemented into my own education to develop my own learning. One-way my time spent during my fieldwork has improved my own learning is how I manage the way I learn. During my fieldwork, I observed many ways the teacher adjusted her lessons to accommodate different learning styles for her students to enhance their learning. For instance, I have learned that just simply reflecting on what I am seeing in the classroom is not enough that I have to comprehend and gain knowledge about the classroom in a more profound and meaningful way, such as relating observations to theories and psychology studies. Also I have learned to reflect more deeply on what is going on around me, not just looking at what is at the surface. I took notes during my observation. I tried to not only write what was happening, but also why it was happening and tried to convey any thoughts or feeling the students, teacher or myself had. Lastly, in my reflection, I improved my reflection skills by asking myself questions, such as, “what would I do,” “how would I do it,” and “how would I react?” Then, I would reflect back on what I had learned throughout the semester to see if I could find the most appropriate …show more content…
First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. Teachers are always trying to improve their own education and professional growth, both for the benefit of their students and for the benefit of themselves. Some ways I plan to accommodate student diversity in my teaching is to maintain a diverse learning environment for my students. I understand that not all students learn the same so I plan to use differentiated instruction. The observation helped me gain knowledge that will help me in the future. When watching Mrs. G, I noticed interactions with students are what led to a pleasant classroom environment. If I am able to interact with students the way Mrs. G did, I know I can be a triumphant teacher. Also, the observation taught me that my strengths play a key role in being a successful teacher. Observing this classroom has opened an unseen perspective that society is not fully aware of in the world of teaching.
What I learned from the artifact and course experience that I will use in my professional work is methods to help enhance student learning. I have learned by possessing certain dispositions, a culture can be built that increases student achievement. By allowing students to control their learning through inquiry learning, deeper meaningful learning can be achieved. I have learned strategies to create a 21st Century learning environment where students are encouraged to facilitate their own learning by collaborating with others beyond the school walls and participating in a learning community. Based off of the data I have collected from my field notes one and two I will be comparing and contrasting aspects from both pieces such as social business and rich points. These aspects are identified by analyzing the conversation itself, which includes influences such as gender, power, and group identity. These instances in which I observed can help to provide an understanding of much larger issues of power, identity, and value in the world we live in today.
All in all, teachers need to be viewed as professionals and not as simply pay babysitters because most do care about the students. Teachers tolerate the low wages, long hours and repetitive disrespect because they desired to place attention on student success. Teachers should not enter that career for the money, but for the devotion they will place on the students. Luckily there are ways to make teachers more valuable in society. Teachers should be given the right equipment to teach the subject that corresponds to them, the two-year skill evaluation should be more precise and by surprise, so no one knows. Also, students should be allowed to evaluate the teachers to provide feedback. Also, teachers should be aware of the surrounding cultures. In conclusion, teachers should motivate students to reach levels they themselves never thought they could attain.
Teaching strategies are used in everyday classrooms. In my two days, fifteen-hour field observation, I had observed many strategies used by multiple teachers. Three strategies that stood out to me were, the attention grabber, technology, and group discussions. These were all effective throughout multiple classrooms. Students seemed to do well when the teachers used these strategies.
There are a variety of approaches teachers may use to help guide and inform their planning to ensure diversity is catered for in all aspects of the classroom environment. Three of the most inclusive approaches to teaching and learning have been examined in further detail below. Although these approaches vary slightly in some aspects, they all maintain the same uniform goal. That is to ensure all learners regardless of diversity, have access to a meaningful, relevant curriculum that allows them to showcase their individual skills and experience success at multiple points along the learning continuum.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
A teacher must discover their role in every classroom. Are they a lecturer, imparting their knowledge and expertise on a subject onto new minds? Or are they a fellow learner, learning alongside their students and discovering new ideas? Teachers must also find a balance of professional and personal. Some teachers make the mistake of getting too close to students, thus being taken advantage of as the “cool teacher” which is a stigma of its own. But must a teacher completely detach themselves from their students? A teacher wants to be approachable, but be respected by their students and maintain a professional distance. Until the twentieth century, teachers had very little preparation and training to becoming an educator. Teacher training typically involved one to two years at a teacher’s college before being employed at a local school, where teachers had to follow strict rules and regulations- even outside of the school. However, teachers have recently been working hard towards being professionals in their fields and they have earned the right to be judged on their success at work, rather than their behavior outside of the school. For the greater good of society, teachers have been striving to reach a full professional status.
Observing teachers really opened my eyes. Teaching is a lot more work than you think it is, and it’s not for everybody. Doing my observation work, I made my decision that I want to stick with teaching for a career!
This week had the biggest impact on my professional growth. During this week, I learned that meaningful reflection is " the practice or act of analyzing our actions, decisions, or products by focusing on our process of achieving them (York-Barr, Sommers, Ghere & Montie, 2006). There are many benefits of reflecting in the field of education. The most influential is the effect that reflection has on the learning that your students gain. If a teacher meaningfully reflects on their practices they will create lessons to better impact students. According to Carol Ann Tomlinson (2003), “Teacher reflection inevitably attends directly to students ' need for affirmation, contribution, power, purpose, and challenge.” Each time a teacher reflects on their work, they empower their students to learn more. Students recognize their teacher’s reflection and mimic their behavior. I feel like learning about reflection impacted me most because it showed me that I should reflect on the good and the bad. Everything that I teach should be reflected on. The more that I reflect on my work, I will be closer to becoming an expert teacher. Reflection has the biggest impact on professionalism as a teacher.
