I will describe different viewpoints from different sources as well as my own perspective on the subject. I will provide examples of what is correct and incorrect professionalism in the workplace. Lastly, I will discuss how you can accomplish correct professionalism in the workplace. There are many perceptions of professionalism, some may say it starts with the way you dress, others how you communicate with your patient. My perception of professionalism in the nursing workplace is making the patient feel like your care team and you are doing the best possible to provide care for the patient. Other definitions of professionalism in the nursing workplace, are “Caring requires more than theoretical knowledge and technical skills; caring …show more content…
Due to technology progressing as it is social media is becoming more and more popular. Per (Williams & Hopper, 2015) “discussing your nursing shift on Facebook is not a safe practice, even if you do not use the patient’s name.” Without knowing you could be violating HIPPA when you post a picture or status. “Taking photos in patient setting on personal devices, posting patient information, including images such as photos or x-rays on social media sites” is said to violate HIPPA. (Williams & Hopper, 2015) Also, it is said that employers look at social media and your pages when they’re considering hiring you. (Williams & Hopper, 2015) As you can see using social media when in the patient setting is very dangerous as it can cost you not getting a job. Being conscious of what you post is important for your job's sake and for you and your facilities professionalism. Social media is very useful for research to provide for the patient care, but we must find a way to use it so it does no harm to the patients and gets the most of
Throughout the Practical Nursing program, there has been many opportunities to closely observe working nurses in different hospitals and facilities. It also has been a great chance to grasp the general idea about professionalism in the workplace and how it can have a great impact in a successful work environment. Combining what was observed and what was learnt from the class, there were three particular aspects of professionalism that seemed to be key characteristics of professional nurses: knowledge from continuous education, autonomy, and positivity. Out of all other characteristics for professionalisms in nursing, those three were the most remarkable features found from the some of the great nurses observed from the clinical sites.
Professionalism can be defined as the competence of skills and principles of an individual in a profession. A professional must be knowledgeable in their profession, committed to improvement of one’s knowledge and skills, service oriented, covenantal relationships to patients/patrons, creative, innovative, ethical, accountable and a leader. These competencies are essential for a professional to perform and excel in their profession.
Professionalism is defined as the accrued knowledge and behavior possessed by individuals in order to obtain successful goals and attributes for their organization, facility or work environment (McDonagh, 2008). Being professional while at work let others know that you are reliable, respectful, and competent at what you do. Professionalism in a medical office is very important, it means putting patient needs as top priority. Professionalism in a medical office is taking responsibility of your patients, committing to patient confidentiality, and having patient-centered care for the patients.
Professionalism plays a significant role in how a person is perceived; there are many characteristics to professionalism. The characteristics that are most important to me are reliability, punctuality, respect, knowledge, and presentation. These characteristics together represent the picture of professionalism
Social media is affecting all spheres of life and no profession is left untouched by the impact of social media and nursing profession is no exception. Nobody can deny the benefits of social media for the profession of nursing yet its disadvantages for the registered nurses and student nurses during clinical practice cannot be ignored. “Social media can be defined as the constellation of internet-based tools that help a user to connect, collaborate, and communicate with others in real time” (Ressler & Glazer, 2010). Social media is growing at a very rapid rate and is now the mainstream communication method for most of the global population (http://www.internetworldstats.com/facebook.htm). It has brought a tremendous revolution in communication and disseminating information to nurses round the world.
Professionalism can be viewed as good behavior, trust, professional values, skills and competence a professional or nonprofessional displays. For example, in medical laboratory science there are certain behaviors, codes of conducts, values, skills and competences expected across the board. For an individual in this field, a display of values, behaviors, codes of conducts, skills and competencies specific to the Medical Laboratory science program is called professionalism. Professionalism can be seen in the way an individual relates to people. An example of a context anyone can display professionalism is during an interview. During an interview, one is expected to behave professionally even when the job is not a professional job. Professionalism can be displayed by anybody.

Professionalism is described as the stringent obedience towards good manners, responsibility, and honesty when dealing with individuals or other organizations in the business environment. It also shows a person’s commitment, along with their morals and competence in order to get the job done right. Treating a patient in a professional manner, showing a positive and caring attitude really goes along way, especially as a first impression. Patients can sense honesty the moment when you enter their room and it is really important to gain the patient’s trust especially when being the patient’s advocate. The performance of any health care company or hospital will grow when workers carry out their tasks in a professional and positive manner.
