I am far more confident now supervising different grade levels that I would have been before the class and the program. I spent 14 years teaching at a large high school, however, I feel like now I could go into an elementary school and be an effective administrator. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. When I use to go into classrooms I was more of an observer and just blended in, but now I am starting to see myself with authority in the classroom. This experience also teaches me about the major difference that just a single grade can make. While working in the kindergarten classroom we are focusing on learning the alphabet, but in the first grade classroom we are reading books that have multiple sentences on a page. Therefore, as I continue on in this program I will understand how to best use what I am being taught to help those that I am teaching. As for my personal teaching philosophies I am learning how I want to make sure I get across to all of my students. In my elementary school, students who were struggling, including myself, were pulled out of the classroom to receive the help they need, but now I see how the idea of an inclusive classroom can be so much more beneficial. Keeping all of the students in one classroom and fitting the lesson plans to fit them all will allow the students to flourish with all different types of learners. With the passage of NCLB, many school reform efforts have been initiated using top-down model in which each school leaders have been charged with initiating bold administrative changes to address the legislation. With the number of leadership theories and models, researchers have become interested in studying those to determine which might bring forth the most significant results for leading such change. Due to the lack of highly qualified administrators and the increasing demands for administrators, Bush, O’Brien & Spangler (2005) studied a program, the Southern Tier Leadership Academy, a collaborative of the New York Education Department. As someone who returned to college after a 28-year absence, I have had the opportunity to be a leader in many of the roles I had during my career. My leadership roles have run the gamut from a team of one to one hundred, and many in-between. Regardless of the size of my team, my leadership style remained steadfast, as a democratic leader. Like Jack Welsh, former CEO of General Electric, I too “encouraged and praised his employees to work independently and to learn how to be leaders themselves (Shriberg, 2011)).” Leading and mentoring teammates to become future leaders is the single most gratifying accomplishment as a leader. I have had the pleasure to work with many fine, young talented individuals and help them develop their leadership skills. Some of them stayed within the organization to further their careers, and others left to lead other companies, but in either case, it’s very rewarding seeing others flourish. Also similar to Mr. Welch, I find that my leadership style is more of a mentor, not a manager. By leading, I can create a vision and get my team to embrace it, and when they become passionate about their work, real progress can be achieved through the 3 C’s; communication, collaboration and contribution.
Education is a very important aspect in the life of a child. The level of success a student has in the classroom is greatly influenced by their teachers. Students, as well as their parents, depend on the teachers to guide them through their education. But who guides a teacher to perform successfully in the classroom? Principals and teachers play an important role in schools. A good relationship among school leaders and teachers is necessary and play an important role in making improvements in the school. Leadership refers to the “process in which one person successfully exerts influence over others to reach desired objectives”. (Okoji, 2015) Good leadership involves honesty, vision, confidence and commitment. It is the ability to inspire a
