My Leadership Style As someone who returned to college after a 28-year absence, I have had the opportunity to be a leader in many of the roles I had during my career. My leadership roles have run the gamut from a team of one to one hundred, and many in-between. Regardless of the size of my team, my leadership style remained steadfast, as a democratic leader. Like Jack Welsh, former CEO of General Electric, I too “encouraged and praised his employees to work independently and to learn how to be leaders themselves (Shriberg, 2011)).” Leading and mentoring teammates to become future leaders is the single most gratifying accomplishment as a leader. I have had the pleasure to work with many fine, young talented individuals and help them develop their leadership skills. Some of them stayed within the organization to further their careers, and others left to lead other companies, but in either case, it’s very rewarding seeing others flourish. Also similar to Mr. Welch, I find that my leadership style is more of a mentor, not a manager. By leading, I can create a vision and get my team to embrace it, and when they become passionate about their work, real progress can be achieved through the 3 C’s; communication, collaboration and contribution. What works for one might not work for another, but at the end of the day, each leader is following their set of values. I hope to continue my journey to being a great leader and am thankful for all of the resources available to me to expand my knowledge and skill-set in the leadership arena. There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself.
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Chad Miller, manager of Buffalo Wild Wings in Dubuque, excellently showcases leadership characteristics each time I work with him. Throughout my one and a half years working underneath him, I have witnessed many great exchanges of leadership from Chad to customers, employees, and his other managers. He remains professional, shows his passion for the sports within the restaurant, as well as the food and atmosphere, clearly communicates effectively, and has inspired many people to move up within the company. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
