Collaborative Leadership
Leadership can take many different forms, depending on the person and the situation in which it is needed. Collaborative leadership is a leadership style in which a leader brings together a large group of people, with a variety of backgrounds, to make a productive decision and act upon it. According to Chrislip and Larson (1994):
…they are the ones who have the credibility to get the right people together to create visions, solve problems, and reach agreements about implementable actions. They are not the leaders who tell us what to do. Instead, they are the ones who help us work together constructively. (p. xx)
This paper is intended to explain where collaborative leadership is used, what characteristics it possesses, and the benefits and disadvantages of using it. It will also summarize what types of people are collaborative leaders and the qualities they have that make them one.
Collaborative leadership shares commonalities with both servant and transformational leadership. It is similar to servant leadership in the sense that the leader is there to help and be on the same level as the group in which he or she is leading. It, too, encourages collaboration in its methods to achieve certain goals put out by the leader. The use of collaboration often boosts a sense of morale and trust within the group, which makes it similar to transformational leadership. This style of leadership can be used in most any setting such as businesses or learning environments, but it is seen with greater success in community groups and organizations.

... should be implemented at appropriate times and can be used as an alternative to other leadership methods. Leaders should be trustworthy, respectable, relatable, and tolerant. A good example of a collaborative leader would be Dwight D. Eisenhower because he had many of these qualities.

Before you can summarize the concepts related to leadership theory, you have to define what leadership is. Leadership is a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task or goals. The fundamental concept of leadership is indirection. In any organization, the leader indirectly impacts the performance of the organization through the performance of individual team members. To make that impact, the leader takes on the role of the coach, and the inspiratory. As the coach, the leader improves the performer's skills. As the inspiratory, the leader inspires the passion required for optimal performance. A good leader can make decisions with a clear mind and will listen to theirs but can run through every consequence and possibility in their head. They take every angle and come out with the best answer for the majority of the people or situations it effects. And will not let their emotions be shut off but will have feeling where it is needed.

In order to make the shared leadership successful, it is of importance that there should be collaboration between the team members and leader. This collaboration is of utmost importance in the current dynamic business environment and the team members must collaborate with each other to adjust to the changing market dynamics. It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.

Leading teams today is a unique opportunity. Interaction between managers and employees has changed so much over the last few decades (Robbins, Decenzo, & Coulter, 2013). Leaders of the past used an autocratic theory, meaning that employees did was their boss asked and did not question why. The employee did not participate in any decisions or give any input to new ideas. The leaders of today understand that if they want to maximize their employee’s performance they must be a leader that influences their employee. It is a different relationship of the past.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
While it seems simple, the authors later provide greater detail and unveil the complexity and challenges within collaborative leadership. The authors also discuss traditional leadership and why it is failing citizen and communities during the first section. The authors site increasing complexity within society along with fragmentation of traditional power within towns, cities, and counties within our country as the primary reasons for failing traditional leadership. Citizens are more diverse than ever, yet they are focused on individualism. Traditional leadership fails to prevent societal division from occurring when these diverse citizens come together with their individual needs. The collection of ideas, knowledge, and experience of different individuals is better than that of only one person. From problem-solving to innovation, organizations have relied on the high-performances of groups and teams to set the organization apart from the rest. Having a common goal will make each team member accountable for the success and failure of the team. Since each team member is accountable to the team, each member's behavior will have an effect on the team. To belong to a team requires that each member be clear on the goals and objectives of the team-to share a common vision. (Park, 2005) By doing so, a group can become a high-performance team.
Leaderis a person who has strong ability to control and direct people in the right ways. There are 10 types of leadership, also there are many differences in skills between leaders and many different ways that each leader uses to treat others. Also Leadership has been described as "a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task". For example, some understand a leader simply as somebody whom people follow, or as somebody who guides or directs others, while others define leadership as "motivating and organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal".
