Before you can summarize the concepts related to leadership theory, you have to define what leadership is. Leadership is a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task or goals. The fundamental concept of leadership is indirection. In any organization, the leader indirectly impacts the performance of the organization through the performance of individual team members. To make that impact, the leader takes on the role of the coach, and the inspiratory. As the coach, the leader improves the performer's skills. As the inspiratory, the leader inspires the passion required for optimal performance. A good leader can make decisions with a clear mind and will listen to theirs but can run through every consequence and possibility in their head. They take every angle and come out with the best answer for the majority of the people or situations it effects. And will not let their emotions be shut off but will have feeling where it is needed. Your principles and beliefs will define your leadership for you. We can...
Chapter 12.3 discusses approaches to leadership. The leadership theory of Leader-Member Exchange suggests that “leaders adopt different behaviors with individual subordinates and that the particular behavior pattern of the leader develops over time and depends, to a large extent, on the quality of the leader-subordinate relationship” (Landy & Conte, 2013, p. 494). In essence, this leadership theory references how close the leader is with the staff member. Is there a feeling of trust? Is the staff member one that holds expertise in their role that the leader can rely on? Building a relationship with a staff member doesn’t happen instantly. The relationship grows over time which can result in staff members being a close confidante to the
What Leadership Means Leadership is 'the behaviour of an individual when he is directing the activities of a group towards a shared goal'. (Hemphill and Coons, 1957, p.7) A leader is interpreted as someone who sets direction in an effort and influences people to follow that direction. How they set that direction and influence people depends on a variety of factors. To really comprehend the 'territory' of leadership, one should briefly scan some of the major theories, notice various styles of leadership and review some of the suggested traits and characteristics that leaders should have. There are many leadership theories.
There are different leadership theories developed throughout the history. Most popular ones are trait theories, behavioral theories, contingency theories, and leader-member exchange (LMX) theory. The author of the post will briefly discuss two theories, Fiedler contingency theory and Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), and compare and contrast their strengths and weakness.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Leadership can mean many different things and often the definition varies from person to person. The definition of leadership that I strive for centers around being who I am. Before someone can be a leader they have to know who they are. Therefore; Leadership is becoming the person you want to be and leading other people to become who they want to be. An example of a leader in my own life would be the man who use to be Pastor at my church. I was a lost soul before he came to my church. He took the time to speak to me and explain to me the joys and privileges of being saved through Christ. He helped mold me into the young lady I am today. Through his leadership I was able to become one step closer to becoming a leader also. As a leader I want to impact people’s lives and help them become who they strive to be.
Leadership have many debates and controversies in the social sciences (Bass, 1990; Bennis, 2007). There have 221 different definitions and conceptions of leadership discovered by Rost (1993). However, Bass (2008) points out that definition of leadership was depends on the specific aspect of leadership of interest to the individual and pointless and the correct definition of leadership.
Leadership have different meaning for different people & has different meaning in different situation. But leadership comprises of both the research work & practical skills that are necessary to lead or guide other individuals, team or any organization. Leadership according to some successful leaders are:
Leaders are our role models. They influence the culture, values, thoughts and actions of the company and its people. Effective leadership is important to any organization’s success. The leaders of an organization must be able to effectively communication the company’s message, delegate work duties, and motivate their employees. The leader’s leadership styles will depend on the leader’s personality. Organizations can choose a leader or manager with a personal style that complements the needs of the company or they can pick a manager who uses the situational leadership style that will change according to employee needs. “Situational leadership brings attention to the role of the follower” (David Wyld, 2010).
Leadership has many definitions. Some defined it as a way a leader influences other. Others stated that leadership is the study of what makes a leader effective (Dalglish & Miller 2010, p.4). For instance; Smith and Bell (2014) defined leadership as a process of attempting to influence the behaviours of others. Many theories have been developed to identify and to describe what make some leaders effective and others not.
Leadership is defined as the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group (Dictionary.com). A leader is assumed to be a know it all, be involved with decisions measured by the result he or she has achieved, can solve any problem. Many leaders may portray these characteristics, but not all. Personally, I believe that some of these characteristics are myths and would not help a leader succeed. Nobody wants a know it all leader. The best leaders are the ones who ask for suggestions and guidance from others. Someone who stands behind a leader does not stand by them because they are a know it all. They stand by them because they see the person representing them and responding to their needs. A leader is not always measured by their results. People back a
The basic premise for leadership is the process of influencing other people to follow your lead in order to accomplish a goal. It is about the relationship between the leader and the followers. A good leader tries to motivate people to bring about positive changes revealing a common objective without using coercion or manipulation. Leadership is not about control, but permitting interaction and communication between the leader and the individual followers. With empowering others, leaders build a foundation of collaborative thinking and encourage an atmosphere of personal involvement; a leader can strengthen the respect and loyalty of his or her followers. Leaders can affect this process by applying their own personal characteristics, such as individual beliefs and values, natural abilities, knowledge, and skills.
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
According to Borkwoski (2016), leadership is a complex process by which a person sets direction, influences others to accomplish a mission, task, or objective, and directs an organization to make it more cohesive and coherent. Leadership can be hard to define because it has different meanings to different people. For example, in a transformational leadership model, leaders set direction and help themselves and others do the right thing to achieve (MindTools, 2015). This means they create an inspiring vision, and then motivate and inspire others to reach that vision (MindTools, 2016). In addition, they manage the delivery of the vision, directly or indirectly, and build their teams to make them stronger (MindTools, 2015).
Leadership is the ability of a person to influence others thoughts, actions and decisions. This influence is exerted by a leader over his followers through his personality, actions and interactions. This is why, leaders are persons with a charismatic personality, owners of effective communication ability and a trend setter in what they do.
What does it take to be an effective leader? This is something that has been asked many times over the course of human history. Some might say that having a strong personality and a commanding presence is needed in order to be a strong leader. Others might say that someone who stays on top of everything and keeps order is more effective as a leader. Everyone has their own opinion on this subject and in many regards, they are not wrong. Good quality leadership is something that is hard to possess and is not something everyone can do. Leadership is something that has been studied and analyzed many times, and from these studies, many theories have emerged from them. Each of these theories of leadership has their own benefits and can be useful
