I would like to run for Junior Class President because I want to be a leader in Thornton High School. To me, being a leader doesn't mean telling people what to do and when to do it, it means setting a good example for my peers and being helpful to other people. In my years in Boy Scouts, I have held many leadership positions which have allowed me to gain a good understanding of a group’s direction and what motivates them to get there. Some of the important attributes I have that make me a good leader are: respect for others, responsibility, organization, friendliness and a thick skin. I believe these are all good traits to have for any leader to inherit as they exude ones confidence and set an example for others. When you show respect for someone, it means that you recognize and value their advice and suggestions. If someone feels they are valued and cared for, they become much happier and are more likely to gain the confidence that they are being led in the right direction. I feel as if there is a form of negativity floating around our school from a reputation given to us mostly from people who have a misconceived notion about Thornton High School. No one knows our school like the students and staff of THS. In order to change the attitude at our school, we need to get more student involvement. This can be accomplished by having more unique spirit days (which STUCO does a good job of), more competitions with prizes (big or small), and more community service. Competitions such as dodgeball tournaments are a great way for people to show school spirit and battle against their friends. New fundraising/contest ideas I would like to introduce are Kan Jam tournaments, pickleball tournaments and food eating contests.
