Leadership is an art that evolves over time. My experience has allowed me to obtain the key principles that make me a leader. Recently, I became President of Denver South High School Key Club. A self-funded group, that provide student with leadership and public service opportunities. It provides student with a lifetime experience and allows their leadership skills to grow. As the President, I coordinate and organize events that allow members to serve there community. With a very strong team, we are able to accomplish our duties as leaders. It was late October, as we were adjusting to our new roles; we were given a compelling project called Kids against Hunger. This project required a vast amount of preparation and organization. I began by researching more on the project and learn more information before presenting this project to my officers. According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 32 million adults and 15 million children. For over 35 years, Feeding America continues to be in the forefront in solving this crisis by providing food to people in need through a nationwide network of food banks. In the late 1960s, Van Hengel established the nation’s first food bank and years later established the first national organization of food banks, Second Harvest. Second Harvest was later called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network and in 2008, the national organization changed its name to Feeding America.
As a leader on campus, there is always a time where you learn to discover your own way of leading a group. As someone who has been involved in student leadership, a Resident Assistant and an officer of a Panhellenic organization,
I chose to do my service learning project at Feed My Starving Children. I chose this service learning project because I had prior knowledge and experience by doing it with my family and church. Feed My Starving Children has been a huge impact to those who have participated in this service experience because their mission is to pack meals that go to very hungry children around the world. Being from a single parent family, it is hard for us to not be concerned about where the money for food is coming from, yet we have food on our tables for everyday meals. Therefore, I can’t imagine what it is like for those who experience hunger.
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. Ways that I would recognize staff members is by organizing events such as Teacher Appreciation Day or by reaching out with social media. By organizing Teacher Appreciation Day, the staff members of Cal High would be rewarded with awards that represent the appreciation the student body has towards them and for all the work that they have done. Students could make cards or posters throughout their classrooms and could have their peers sign them by writing thank you notes or expressions of appreciation. One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.
The term leadership often brings to mind people like George Washington, Ghandi, Dwight Eisenhower, or current day military or political figures. These people represent certain strengths, character, and moral behaviors that we attribute to the concept of leadership. At its core, leadership is the ability to influence others to work toward and achieve a common objective or goal. An individual can exhibit leadership at any level of society, not just high profile positions. In fact, leadership can even be witnessed among children and young adults.

Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Being a leader in almost any given situation has been an innate quality that I have possessed for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself nominating myself for leadership positions. My most recent and fulfilling leadership position was in my eleventh and twelfth grade school years when I held the position of Drum Major for Purnell Swett High School’s Marching Rams. Being in this position meant that I had to give up the spotlight of performance, turn my back to the crowd, and lead my fellow band members on and off of the field of competition, high school football games, and community parades. Over the course of these two years, I have learned many defining qualities about myself and have learned how to incorporate these newly learned and innate qualities into my everyday life.
Leadership is a major way in which people change the minds of others and move organizations forward to accomplish identified goals.
