Being a leader for in almost any given situation has been an innate quality that I have possessed for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself nominating myself for leadership positions. My most recent and fulfilling leadership position would be my eleventh and twelfth grade school years when I held the position of Drum Major for Purnell Swett High School’s Marching Rams. Being in this position meant that I had to give up the spotlight of performance, turn my back to the crowd, and lead my fellow band members on and off of the field of competition, high school football games, and community parades. Over the course of these two years, I have learned many defining qualities about myself and have learned how to incorporate these newly learned and innate qualities to my everyday life. Throughout this two year experience the quality that I feel tested more than others, was the quality of patience. Often times before I held this position, I found myself becoming extremely impatient with individuals and situations when they would not go the way as planned or as smoothly as I had planned for them to go. This position taught me that not all situations are going to run smoothly and that we need to make the best of what we are presented with. It also taught me that not all individuals learn at the same pace, the same way, and at times do not handle individuals close to their own age giving instructions on how to complete a task. With this realization, I found myself trying to find methods of teaching that appealed to all individuals as well as found ways of not coming off as trying to force individuals to complete the tasks the way that I see fit. I would describe my character as optimistic, understanding, tolerant, ambitiou... ... middle of paper ... ... to go to the upcoming competition, I decided that I would step in to be the voice of reason between the two groups. Although these two groups consisted of the majority of my friends and the conflict was about an issue that I obtained some knowledge about, I placed my friendships aside and refused to let my opinion sway me in the way that I felt would resolve the issue. I knew that letting this situation go on without turning it in would leave the band lacking, but I also knew that refusing to turn it in put me position in jeopardy. I made my decision based upon the band as a whole and that we would need our entire member to compete at the best of our abilities. My position as drum major did not really matter to me at the time of resolving the issue. It was then that I realized what my mother and father had been trying to instill in me for the last seventeen years.
Sweat dripping down my face and butterflies fluttering around my stomach as if it was the Garden of Eden, I took in a deep breathe and asked myself: "Why am I so nervous? After all, it is just the most exciting day of my life." When the judges announced for the Parsippany Hills High School Marching Band to commence its show, my mind blanked out and I was on the verge of losing sanity. Giant's Stadium engulfed me, and as I pointed my instrument up to the judges' stand, I gathered my thoughts and placed my mouth into the ice-cold mouthpiece of the contrabass. "Ready or not," I beamed, "here comes the best show you will ever behold." There is no word to describe the feeling I obtain through music. However, there is no word to describe the pain I suffer through in order to be the best in the band either. When I switched my instrument to tuba from flute in seventh grade, little did I know the difference it would make in the four years of high school I was soon to experience. I joined marching band in ninth grade as my ongoing love for music waxed. When my instructor placed the 30 lb. sousaphone on my shoulder on the first day, I lost my balance and would have fallen had my friends not made the effort to catch me. During practices, I always attempted to ease the discomfort as the sousaphone cut through my collar bone, but eventually my shoulder started to agonize and bleed under the pressure. My endurance and my effort to play the best show without complaining about the weight paid off when I received the award for "Rookie of the Year." For the next three seasons of band practice, the ache and toil continued. Whenever the band had practice, followed by a football game and then a competition, my brain would blur from fatigue and my body would scream in agony. Nevertheless, I pointed my toes high in the air as I marched on, passionate about the activity. As a result, my band instructor saw my drive toward music and I was named Quartermaster for my junior year, being trusted with organizing, distributing, and collecting uniforms for all seventy-five members of the band. The responsibility was tremendous. It took a bulk of my time, but the sentiment of knowing that I was an important part of band made it all worthwhile.
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. ...join so long ago I never really knew I 'd end up here doing what I do. It seems like the common theme for me is seeing something and saying “I can 't do that” then pursuing it until I can. One of my fondest memories is watching someone at the percussion concert play a marimba solo when I was in sixth grade and just looking over at Justin molder and laughing saying “wow I can 't do that” now I do that all the time. I didn 't think I could ever be the leader of a group like this it seemed like too much for me, but now after watching and being in this program and seeing where it could go and what I can do, I want to help take it there. I feel great about next year no matter what happens but I 'm ready to step up, I 'm ready take on whatever I have to to make this year the best year yet. Not just for me but for us all every last one of us in this great family I call home.
It takes a long time to become an effective and respected leader but can evaporate very quickly with one misstep. It needs to be nurtured and cultivated every day. My personal leadership style is to observe and correct. As a junior member, one of my Chief told me, “I don’t care how long it takes you to do a job as long as you do it right the first time because if it is wrong you will be the one fixing it.” That resonated with me because it allowed me to take risks and learn from my mistakes making me a better technician. I firmly believe one of the best learning tools is failure. His statement let me know it was all right to fail but if you do you will be learning from it. One of the biggest decisions of my high school career came my sophomore year when I decided to try out for the role of drum major in my high school band. This decision was very tough to make due to the fact that I was a sophomore, and although I already had three years of experience under my belt as a band member at Northview High School, I knew that it would be very tough to earn the respect of my peers if I succeeded in becoming drum major. Out of the three years I had spent in the band, the biggest influence on my decision to try out came from my very first marching season, between August and December of 2012. It is about who I am off the podium. For the past five years (I marched up as an 8th grader), I have been proving something to these people, so that they trust me in this position. The character of drum major or leader is one I have been perfecting since I was a freshman. For a long time I was just an actor trying to be a character. Eventually, I had acted the part so much that I became it, and it was my role. I give respect to receive it. I build real relationships of with members to achieve trust, accountability, and effort. When people are torn up inside because of their home life, which is quite frequent in Lenoir City Tennessee, I am their shoulder to cry on, or a set of ears to vent to, or a buffer to dull their anger. When people are frustrated with me for some reason, I seek them out and learn what I can do different. When there are five flavors of gum stuck to the floor of the band room at 11:30 on a Friday night, I get on my knees with a plastic fork and start scraping. When the band director constantly yells at me for this that and the other, I take into account the criticisms and practice harder. The band and the director see this character I have transformed into, or maybe the one I have always been, and that is why I have the honor of standing on the podium and wearing the gloves. Upon learning the position of Drum Major has an opening, I did not immediately consider pursuing it. Simply being able to play my instrument in band was enjoyment enough, or so I thought. Pondering the idea more thoroughly, I came upon the realization of all that I could accomplish musically holding the position of Drum Major. I realize that this opportunity has many potential benefits in regards to my future. Being Drum Major would allow me the opportunity to hold a broader leadership position in the band than my currently held position as section leader.
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
I believe that leadership is not something that you are born with, but that has to be learned over time. You learn to become a leader from watching other leaders, and also from personal experience. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. Being a leader does not mean you get to boss people around by telling them what to do. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day. Great leaders are few and far between, but everyone possesses the power to be a good leader. I have only been in the military for about three and a half years; most of this time has been spent at CMR St-Jean and RMCC. I have yet to be put into any major leadership roles, but from what I have been able to accomplish in regards to leading others and the leaders that I have been able observe over the last few years, I have started to slowly figure out what type of leader I would like to become. According to Johns and Saks (2014) leadership is, “The influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context” (206). From past experience, influencing others to do something can be complicated at times but can be accomplished by staying focused on the task at hand. The leadership roles I have been able to take part in have brought me to the conclusion that cohesion is the core factor of how I lead.

Growing up I have always taken on leadership roles. I was always the organizers of group projects and was team captain of my club and high school soccer team for several years. This past experience with leadership roles has lead to me developing several of valuable traits associated with leadership. For example, I have strong communication and problem solving skills, which have helped me in my past leadership positions and will continue to be an asset in the future. Although I have had experience in leadership roles in the past, I learned through this reading that there is room for a considerable amount of growth. One thing that was a valuable lesson for me was that leaders must be followed as well as follow others at times. I have always took control of situations and tried to lead others, but now I realize that sometimes even leaders need to take a back seat and let their followers take some control. I will employ this in the future in the clinical setting to ensure that all of my subordinates or colleagues feel they have control and power over the decisions being made. This is definitely an area I intend to grow in and utilize in the future to enhance my leadership abilities. I was in a program called Servant and Leadership Training; nicknamed as SALT or Slave and Labour Training. The nickname halfway sums up the program. Everyday we woke while the campers were sleeping, served when they woke, cleaned when they left, and learned when they were gone. We learned things such as how the Bible and Science are like Hamlet and revenge, and that to become a leader you must first set yourself apart for the masses. This idea is expressed by the brilliant businessman Ray Kroc. Ray Kroc once said, “The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves”. This quote moved me to stay on task every day and to strive to do my best. My mindset encouraged my team to push past the unrelenting sandman that reminded us of our exhaustion, to overlook our aching muscles, and to see every smiling face as a success. I soon become the one that our counselors looked to for leadership. I was able to control our team in a way that they couldn’t. My ability to lead led me to run a store while I was there. I assigned my team members jobs, took care of issues, and open and closed for my boss. All of this taught me the importance of being a fair and stern leader; as well as contributing to my personal development.
