Christian vs. Secular Leadership
In my opinion Christian and secular leadership vary greatly. Although they share the same basic principles of what a leader should be, Christian leaders take leadership a step further. First off, Christian leaders are called to lead by Him. This means He has chosen these individuals as His people to take on the responsibility of leading in a Christian manner. Christian leaders lead in a way that exemplifies Christ. They are caring, passionate, and invested in the organization in a way that differs from a secular leader. Balance is key in all aspects of life and for me it is always something I struggle with. School and work seem to take over and I don 't make the necessary time to work out, go out with friends, or spend time with my family. Bowling (2011) asserts that Christian leaders sustain balance by carefully selecting from every option available and that this balance keeps the pressure of success and failure in proper alignment. (Bowling, 2011). Sometimes in life you become overwhelmed and feel as though you are drowning in your work. This I have found is related to improper balance. After reading this chapter I believe there is a way to do all that matters the most to you. In order to be able to maintain a healthy balance between work, family, and God you must determine what is essential and what is not. Bowling describes this by saying, “you must travel light (2011, p.135).” You might not be able to have it all, but you can have all the things and people you can’t live …show more content…
Growing up I have always taken on leadership roles. I was always the organizers of group projects and was team captain of my club and high school soccer team for several years. This past experience with leadership roles has lead to me developing several of valuable traits associated with leadership. For example, I have strong communication and problem solving skills, which have helped me in my past leadership positions and will continue to be an asset in the future. Although I have had experience in leadership roles in the past, I learned through this reading that there is room for a considerable amount of growth. One thing that was a valuable lesson for me was that leaders must be followed as well as follow others at times. I have always took control of situations and tried to lead others, but now I realize that sometimes even leaders need to take a back seat and let their followers take some control. I will employ this in the future in the clinical setting to ensure that all of my subordinates or colleagues feel they have control and power over the decisions being made. This is definitely an area I intend to grow in and utilize in the future to enhance my leadership abilities. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. There are many responsibilities that go hand in hand while being in Medical Office Management. Being a leader is a significant skill that is required for the job, and it is one I feel I have, but can always improve on. While there are many other skills one will need to be a successful Medical Manager, they are ones that are learned in time. Many of which are taught during certification programs and on the job experience. Being fit to be a Medical Office Manager is crucial. There are long work days full of paperwork and meeting with executives, as well as crunching numbers and overseeing employees. Setting goals through the day and long term goals, will help me and others be effective leaders.

The leadership clinical preceptor that I have had the opportunity to work with throughout the semester considers herself to be a transformational leader (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014). The preceptor displays transformational leadership behavior characteristics such as showing charisma, inspiring and motivating the unit, viewing each employee as an individual (Yoder-Wise, 2011). For example, she makes an effort to get to know each employee individually by gaining knowledge about their personal lives such as likes, dislikes, hobbies, and family life front the point of hiring the employee (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014). She also promotes and encourages her unit employees to function as a team not as individuals (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014).
In my own experience leadership is not just about one person telling others what to do; it’s about more than just giving orders. It is about getting a group of people to work together towards a common goal with more than just the goal in mind. It is also not just about setting goals for the group but also setting personal goals for the individual, guiding and supporting them all
In today’s society, Effective leaders are essential to an organization and exceptional leadership techniques impact the success of reaching goals. Most important leaders often viewed and analyzed as a key component of an organization improperly trained leader can cause both moral and costly negative consequences. Even though unprepared leaders lead in our community today, Billy Graham’s leadership style and communication skills affected the United States because he exhibits characteristic of a leader. There were several obstacles as a leader that Billy Graham endured as a visionary, and his leadership effectiveness and traits observed throughout his ministry.
They are influenced by their family of origin, their education, their work experience, and the people they interact with. For Ms. Eckert this has all brought her to her current career position and approach to leadership. She holds leadership not only as the challenge and difficult task that many people today see it as. She also views it as an amazing opportunity to influence others. Ms. Eckert also noted the importance of coaching others, both in their nursing development, and in their leadership potential. This is particularly important as we are facing rapid change within the nursing field. There should be a certain amount of mentorship to learn from those who have experience and to develop one’s own skill. For Ms. Eckert some of the main elements she discussed as contributing to a strong leader are the willingness to coach others, emotional intelligence, a sense of spirituality, valuing diversity, and openness to change and innovation. Understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses is essential to becoming and being a good leader. “Purposeful leaders understand who they are” (Mayfield, 2013). The author of this paper has had previous opportunities to lead, and will reflect on her experiences using the assigned inventory. She will evaluate her skill set and discuss ways she can be an advocate for change with the hospital and community in which she is employed. Though I am highly focused on completing tasks as a student nurse, I do not believe that my preferred leadership style is a close resemblance of my current practice as a leader and nursing student. It can be difficult to examine leadership in the context of health care, because research and theories of leadership were created in a business environment. Jamaludin et al. (2011) conducted a study with political workers to determine if transactional, transformational, and spiritual leadership attributes overlapped, and the findings proved the three leadership styles did not overlap and were distinct. The primary differences were transactional leadership is associated with economic stability, transformational leadership is linked to self-actualization, and spiritual leadership extends beyond self-actualization (Jamaludin et al., 2011). Transactional leadership targets a relationship exchange of expected behavior and performance based on rewards or extrinsic motivation. Transformational leadership inspires followers to excel through creating a trusting, respectful, and self-actualizing workplace. Spiritual leadership motivates followers through intrinsic motivation such as meaning and purpose, and going beyond self. The difference between transformational and spiritual leadership is spiritual leadership requires leader and follower to band together, fostering a spiritual survival relationship and consciousness, translating to higher commitment and performance levels, and employee satisfaction and well-being (Jamaludin et al., 2011). Money is not always the answer to motivation issues.
Robert Clinton states “The central task of leadership is influencing God’s people toward God’s purposes” (Clinton, 1988). George Barna defines a Christain Leader as “someone who is called by God to lead; leads with and through Christlike character; and demonstrates the functional competencies that permit effective leadership to take place” (Barna, 1997). It is a shame we as Christians fail to recognize that Christ would have us be leaders in more than the church.
"A leader is an individual (or, rarely, a set of individuals) who significantly affects the thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors of a significant number of individuals” (Gardner, Howard 2012). An essential part of a leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence people to follow their lead. Leaders are both men and women who have the ability to influence others in a community, control situations, connect with others and persuade others to follow them or the goals they define. To be a good leader one must set a good example and make correct decisions for difficult choices. I myself am implementing leadership skills into my every day life. Leadership skills are all around us. They can be applied to any situation where one may be required to take the lead. This can be
