Feed My Starving Children Service Project
I chose to do my service learning project at Feed My Starving Children. I chose this service learning project because I had prior knowledge and experience by doing it with my family and church. Feed My Starving Children has been a huge impact to those who have participated in this service experience because their mission is to pack meals that go to very hungry children around the world. Being from a single parent family, it is hard for us to not be concerned about where the money for food is coming from, yet we have food on our tables for everyday meals. Therefore, I can’t imagine what it is like for those who experience hunger.

This organization was founded in 1987, so it has been around for 29 years. All the people that came to help were volunteers to pack meals for malnourished children around the world. Feed My Starving Children has seven permanent food-packing sites, which three are in Minnesota, three in Illinois, and one in Arizona. Some of the countries that these meals have been distributed amongst are Haiti, Kenya, Philippines, Costa Rica, and many more. These meals that are distributed got to orphanages, schools, refugee camps, and malnourished centers around the world. Feed My Starving Children or FMSC, for short, has a main food supporter, which is MannaPack Rice that is packed into small pouches and is only made with boiling water. The formula that goes in the pouch consists of four components which are rice, soy, vitamins, and dehydrated vegetables. These ingredients improve the health, growth, and physical well-being of the children, so that they would not be in danger of starvation anymore in the world.

In 2003 alone CAFOD raised more than £30 million and helped development and emergency relief projects in more than 60 countries. One of CAFOD’s aims was to relieve poverty, to do this they needed money which is raised in many different ways. Family Fast Days in Lent and October raise the most money for CAFOD. However there are also many other ways in which CAFOD raise funds such as, 24 hour fasts, ad Working in Partnership groups, and Churches and Roman Catholic schools also raise money for CAFOD. Another way that CAFOD raises money is by working hand in hand with Christian Aid to sell products produced by Less Developed Countries at a fair rate.
Many service projects have had an impact on my life, but the significant one is the time that our group put together Blessing Bags. The Blessing Bags were bags put together for homeless people. This project had an impact on my life because at one point in time, my family struggled. We did not have a stable home and we had to continue movie because of the living expenses. It is very difficult to buy many products that are needed for personal hygiene, especially if someone does not have a stable home. There are many people that live in the streets and it breaks my heart. Whenever I see homeless people, I give them what I can. Although my family did not become homeless, I could not imagine living in the streets without any food, clothing, or products
The lunch bell rung at full volume as the main doors flung open. I predicted that a herd of people will rush in like the water from a spill gate. But instead every person was a line; in fact it was a neat single filed line. Another thing I was astonished to see was to the fact that every single person I served to was superbly well mannered. It was the magical word of thank-you which left great remarks in my life and made my volunteering experience an enjoyable one. After the shift, I have come to realize that everything my family and friends have said about impoverished people was nothing but just a stereotype. In addition, I have self-discovered that volunteering is what I want to do on my spare time. The joy from making new friends, appreciated and making a difference in society was too meaningful to put in words. From then on, volunteering had become one of my most highly valued priorities. Whenever I have time to spare, I will go
Selecting to do my service learning at Harvest Hope Food Bank was a very impactful experience. This was so, because of the fact that I have never volunteered at a food bank until now. The organization was able to connect me with the required skills I will practice throughout my career as a professional social worker, therefore better preparing me for assisting clients who may be dependent on my services.
According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 32 million adults and 15 million children. For over 35 years, Feeding America continues to be in the forefront in solving this crisis by providing food to people in need through a nationwide network of food banks. In the late 1960s, Van Hengel established the nation’s first food bank and years later established the first national organization of food banks, Second Harvest. Second Harvest was later called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network and in 2008, the national organization changed its name to Feeding America.
I performed mainly behind the scenes tasks such as making boxes and packing food. While I did not deal with feeding the hungry directly, I still learned and observed many lessons that were reflected in class. One thing I observed that we discussed in Reconciling All Things is people ignoring and crossing divides to help those in need. The people at the food bank did not care what the person’s socioeconomic status was, they still served and helped them. A lesson that became more solidified through this project was the fact that everyone’s job at the food bank, no matter how big or small, is important to getting to overall mission completed. Whether it was someone like me making boxes or someone serving food in the kitchen, we all played a role to end hunger. Another thing that I noticed through this project was that some problems are easier, maybe not by much but still nonetheless, to solve than we make them out to be. Hunger is probably the easiest social problem that can be solved in America due to the excessive amount of food wasted every year. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and watched things that were discussed in class come to
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
Poverty is a huge topic, one with many different branches and types that affect nearly half the world’s population. Hunger is the number one cause of death in the world, killing more than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. That is absolutely insane, and it’s not just a statistic, these are genuine people who have to go through their lives without proper
How, in a country full of 318.9 million people, are there 16 million children that are not getting the food they need? It is crazy to think about it possibly even being your son’s or daughter’s friend. “1 in 7 people struggle to get enough to eat,” the organization, Feeding America, claims. The main questions we need to ask when assessing this is how, why, and what can we do? So, how? Approximately 46.7 million people are in poverty, and that includes 15.5 million children. If a family is in poverty, that normally means they are going hungry. Why? The reasons can be endless, it could be
In conclusion, Nutrition is one of the most important thing for children to learn because they need to have the basic knowledge of what kind of food would give them better energy for their body. Instead, of choosing fast food, soda, or cookies, etc, which may lead them to childhood obesity and other chronic disease. Three Square is decent charity that helps people suffer through hunger. It provides all different kinds of healthy ready to eat food for hunger people, so they could get a better nutrition. This organization use a abundance of volunteers, so they could get all the food get pack quickly and have the food ready for those hunger people as soon as possible. Also, I think in my communication 101 class, we would have the ability to help these hunger people as well, by being a volunteer or donating money. I believe our help may probably have lesser hunger people in the
While the issue of obesity in America is taking center stage, a less conspicuous health issue of equal importance is occurring in many families throughout the country. This nutrient deficiency is known as malnutrition. Malnutrition is most abundant in families living in poverty. It has a distinct set of symptoms and can cause irreversible damage if not treated properly. Though malnutrition isn’t a lost cause, organizations such as Unicef and ACF are not only covering the home front, they are reaching out to developing countries as well. Aside from privately funded organizations, federally funded programs have been made accessible to families in need as well.
When I think about the person I want to become I think about a kind person who wants to make a difference in the world. I want to help and Inspire others and In general just make this world a more positive and loving place. The personal project was an opportunity to not only do something for myself but for others. By doing this I would be able to reach my goal of being the person I wish to become someday by helping others and spreading my positivity. I decided on feeding the homeless because with this I would be able to help others in need and hopefully inspire or make them happy. Feeding the homeless won 't necessarily change the world, but small acts of kindness like this might inspire other people to do them too and If everyone decided to
Homelessness is everywhere, it is not a new trend and is a growing problem. Many people ask themselves should I help the homeless or not; it is easier to just ignore the problem than to give a helping hand. Every person needs help at one point or another in their life and homeless people should be no different. Assisting the homeless with healthcare, housing, and childcare are ways people are able to and should help the homeless.
America needs to fund more of its own child hunger issues, but we still however are avid contributors to “third-world” hunger issues. The burden of hunger and malnutrition are mainly in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. According to Sally Raphel (2104), each day in the developing world, 30,100 children die from mostly preventable and treatable malnutrition. Global recessions also cause higher food prices and foreign aid reduction. Statically, these developing world countries see child hunger the most; about 89% of undernourished people (including children) live in developing countries. The bulk (more than 70%,)of the world’s hungry are in the rural areas and villages in Africa and Asia. From a national standpoint, women and children suffer the most, and malnourished mother, and expecting mother soften give birth to underweight babies (ESchoolToday 2010). The global hunger problem is closely related to poverty, the economy, malnutrition, health conditions, unemployment; and it’s going to take a global change to totally eliminate
These experiences have afforded me opportunities to demonstrate my gifts and talents that had previously gone undiscovered. Through different community service opportunities, I either learned something new about myself or I was reassured something. These qualities include that I am creative, reliable, open-minded, passionate, and an effective team player. Community service changed my life by developing my character through enhancing my transferable skills, which allowed me to see the world differently. Everyone, from all walks of life, needs to in some way, shape, or form give back to the community because it will not only benefit the less fortunate but it will benefit the volunteers as well. Additionally, I learned about the wide variety of resources available to help the community. There are so many resources out there that people are ignorant to like certain shelters and food banks. Ultimately, community service taught me the greatest gift I could ever receive, how to be
