When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. Herzberg’s theory says in order to get the best out of employees a leader needs to create satisfaction in the working environment. Herzberg listed six factors that would achieve this. Those factors are achievement, recognition, work, responsibility, growth, and advancement. When I read this I felt like this is a perfect dynamic to a basketball team. Here is an example that demonstrates what I mean. I recruit a freshman to play at my program, which is an obvious achievement. He is going to work hard like the rest of the team in order to gain recognition, and from this he will gain more responsibility from his teammates. This will speed up his growth as a player, and help him advance into the starting line-up for my team. So Herzberg’s Two Factor theory gives every player the chance to succeed which is going to breed satisfaction in my basketball program. I firmly believe that these two leadership theories, and leadership styles already mentioned are going to help my create a positive atmosphere in my basketball team, and help us excel. This kind of coach wanted me to succeed just as much as I wanted to succeed so when I know as an athlete another person was backing me up and believing in me other than myself it truly helps build my confidence. However at the same time people need a coach who is going to be hard on them to make them better, and push them to the next level. So that means sometimes changing something about their life habits, or changing something about their basketball game in general. Or even as simple as looking things over and realizing this technique doesn’t work anymore, and needing to go about it in a different way. If an athlete trusts their coach to make the right decisions regarding their abilities they are going to succeed so much more. This is why I feel combining Charismatic and Transformational Leadership qualities together are going to bring the best out of your athletes, because they are going to trust the person when he or she is trying to coach
I have been a four year letter-winner in volleyball and basketball. Athletics have been a crucial part of developing my character and work ethic. In sports, you must work together with your team to reach your goals. Trust and communication skills are vital and are tested every day. The failure and setbacks I have faced through sports have helped me to believe in myself and have the self-confidence that it takes to be successful in athletics and in life. As a senior captain of the volleyball and basketball teams, my leadership has improved tremendously as high school has progressed. Being a leader holds me accountable and I aim to be a role model for younger teammates on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Leadership is contagious throughout the world and most importantly in the Army. It is not just my view, but of all leaders, at all levels, that organizations are responsible for setting conditions that lead to long-term organizational success. Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
The qualities that make a good leader are as varied as the people that fill leadership roles. Some leaders aren’t overly dynamic but somehow get the best out of people while others appear to be too carefree to take seriously. What is it then that makes leaders who they are? A personal philosophy of leadership is that distinguishing trait that every leader possesses. What those leadership characteristics and behaviors are will be explored in the following text, along with what I believe is the best route for me to follow as I work on developing my own personal philosophy of leadership.

In order to capture what can be said of today’s leadership with regard to classical writings on leadership one must question whether leadership is a changing phenomena over time or rather, whether there is a single "best" leadership style that suits all leaders in all situations over time. There are more studies on leadership today than previously and leadership is being researched by a wider range of people than before. Today’s writings offer a different analysis of leadership from classical writings because some classical writings were written by leaders themselves and therefore, often bias. There is a relationship in some behavioural patterns between classical and contemporary leaders in terms of military leadership, the use of rhetoric in learning leadership skills and lastly, of leaders extending their framework of control causing conflicts occurring that, with the help of others, could otherwise have been avoided.
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.

A time when I modeled good leadership and/or citizenship was in my senior year of high school. In my senior year I was in a class called the Health Occupation 2. In the Health Occupation 2 class, we would go to the Sikeston Convalescent Center nursing home every Thursday and Friday to get our training done. So, we can become Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA). In the nursing home, I learned that a lot of families left their parents in nursing home because they felt like their parents were burdened to them and they would never visit them.
