As one gets older, leadership becomes a huge part of who they are and how they carry themselves. Are they able to take on responsibilities, express their opinions and make decisions among their peers? Are they respectable and reliable and therefore able to inspire and support others? Are they outgoing, and positive? All essential for a leader. Throughout the past 4 years, I have taken on several leadership roles. I have become more involved in my church. I have taken on more responsibilities in 4-H and Kane County Ambassadors. I have participated in high school cheerleading, and competitive All-Star cheerleading. Participation in these organizations has allowed me to develop outstanding leadership skills.
My desire to be a role model to the youth in my church and spread God's word have provided for different leadership roles.  The purpose of this paper is to identify and contrast the different styles of leadership exhibited by two characters found in the 1949 movie Twelve O’Clock High starring Gregory Peck as General Savage, Army Air Forces general. Based on a true story, Twelve O’Clock High is a inspirational account of the highly dangerous precision daylight bombing missions carried out by US Army Air Force’s 918th Bomber Group in England during the last part of World War II. In the beginning of the movie the squadron is commanded by general Davenport. It is very clear that General Davenport’s main concern is the wellbeing of his men. He obviously had developed close interpersonal relationships. The men of the squadron were completely devoted towards Davenport and they trusted any decision that he would make. General Davenport’s affection for his men comes to interfere with his ability to lead them. The squadron suffers heavy losses to planes and heavier losses to soldiers. One instance that clearly demonstrates Davenport’s incapability to uphold his responsibilities as the leader is when he jeopardizes the well being of the entire squadron by ignoring protocol and flying out of formation in the attempt to save one plane. When it becomes apparent to Davenport’s superiors that his emotional feelings have become an obstacle to his effectively leading the squadron they relieve him. General Savage who is ordered to take over the underachieving bomber group experiencing heavy losses because of poor technique and lack of focus. Savage takes a kind of tough love approach, holding his men to the highest standards. Savage makes the point that the ultimate objection of the squadron is to successfully complete the assigned missions. Throughout the movie Savage constantly makes it absolutely clear to the squadron that no one individual’s wellbeing will be placed ahead of the entire team and the success of the team. Initially the changing of the preceding General dispirits the squadron. Involvement in marching band, field hockey, and various other activities has given me many opportunities to show leadership. My first leadership opportunity was in eighth grade when I became a WEB leader. While I was a WEB leader, I helped incoming sixth graders get adjusted to middle school life and find their classes on the first day. I also met up with the sixth graders in my group once a month at lunch and got to know them while I asked how school was going and helped them with any issues they had. In marching band, this past season I was a marching captain for my section. I helped the freshmen learn to march, demonstrated proper marching techniques for others, and gave advice to anyone having trouble with part of our marching show. Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I first encountered the significance of leadership in the tenth grade. Berry College the largest campus in the U.S. was in search of school ambassadors to serve part in a seminar known as HOBY. To get chosen you had to write an essay describing your leadership roles, and at that moment I thought that I did not have any. I literally did not know what it meant to be a leader. I had to brainstorm till I remembered going through one of the most difficult times of my life. The lack of understanding the English language became one of my biggest obstacles, and even caused me to repeat a chapter of my life. However, I did not cease; I continued to fight and strove to help others who were susceptible of following my steps. I used my story as an example, and hoped that it would make a difference in someone else’s life.

Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Youth Ministry is thought to be the stepping stone for adult participation in the church. (Martin, 2014) Consequently, many believe that the role of youth ministry in a local church is vital to it’s existence and the key to it’s continued survival, as the youth are believed to be the “church of tomorrow.” (Codrington, 2010) Ministers and church faculty as a whole are tasked not only with preparing young people to do the world’s work, but also to promote good citizenship and passing on a desire to make the world a better place.
When considering the term management, there has always been a common miss conception that this automatically makes an individual a leader. Leadership is only a single element of the management role. Many times managers are more comfortable utilizing a particular leadership style. While this may work well the majority of the time, certain employees or situations may require a different approach. Good leadership requires that the individual recognize the need for change to motivate their employees to accomplish the task at hand or to reach common goals. Understanding the importance of leadership is essential. However, the key element to focus on is what steps can be taken to improve one’s leadership capabilities. For many individuals this may be a difficult question to answer and may only be possible through self-assessment and reflection.
Leadership manifests itself in many ways. The most obvious way is as student council president, "Captain Avon", captain of a team or a president of a club. Less obvious attributes of leadership are inspiring others through action, one on one encouragement and sometimes supporting others to shine in a more prominent and public way while taking a back seat. I aspire to be a more visible leader.
In today’s society, there are leaders all over the world. These leaders are well experienced because they learned from someone eminent in leadership before they got into what they are in today. What will happen to future young adults if they have no idea about leadership? That’s why in June of 2013, there was a small study done at a middle school that taught young middle schoolers the skills in leadership can be used in the future. There were tons of lessons and activities involved in this small study, but the most significant lessons taught were character associated in leadership, interactions with fellow peers and learned how to believe in themselves before leading others.
