Leadership manifests itself in many ways. The most obvious way is as student council president, "Captain Avon", captain of a team or a president of a club. Less obvious attributes of leadership are inspiring others through action, one on one encouragement and sometimes supporting others to shine in a more prominent and public way while taking a back seat. I aspire to be a more visible leader.
My name is Hunter Marshall, I am a sophomore and have been looking forward to applying for the Woodwell Leadership Award since Kevin Sieber won last year. Knowing Kevin, before and after his Outward Bound experience and hearing from him , I know I would personally benefit from the program and be able to make more of a contribution to the Avon Old Farms

One thing that resonated with me, was their promise "It will not be easy, but it will be worth it". I am a guy who loves a challenge academically and athletically. I know the Outward Bound experience, combining challenges in nature with teamwork and self-preservation will help me enhance my own abilities to become a more outspoken and public leader. Soccer is my main passion. As a freshman I thought I came to AOF understanding what it took to be a varsity player, but I was wrong. I made JV, was a starter and did get the opportunity to play up on varsity a few times as a freshman. As a JV player I was known for my hard work on the field. Some criticize me for my ruthless determination during practice pushing my teammates to be faster and better. Several times Coach Cantello invited me to the varsity practice commending me for my hard work and calling it out to the others as something they should aspire to. Our teams hard work during practice was evident on the JV field with our winning achievements with coaches and players acknowledging it was a special season. I think my contribution to the team success on the field and the comradery off the field was influenced by my can-do positive attitude. Coaches, soccer, squash, and lacrosse comment on my work ethic and my ability to challenge others through healthy competition during practice. They have seen how I support my teammates by helping them work on a skill outside of practice and how I help build up the confidence by supporting them on the field with my actions and my words my ability to dig deep and challenge myself is one way I demonstrate leadership to others. I want to learn how to improve my captain skill. By this I mean that I want to be able to talk to my teammates about anything, give them guidance, and be able to help the in a time of need
Leadership can be defined as the ability of a superior to influence the behavior of a minor or group and persuade them to follow a particular course of action. A leader sets a course of action and ensures that everyone follows the action. Leading can apply to leading oneself, other individuals, groups, organizations and societies. The nature of how leading is done depends on the framework of the situation, one's point of view, and on the nature and needs of those involved. While leadership is learned, the skills and knowledge processed by the leader are influenced by their traits, such as beliefs, values, ethics, and most importantly character.
Joining a high school baseball team was a commitment. It took over every second of my life; it occupied my every thought and motivated everything I did. My high school baseball team was not easy to become a part of. First I needed prove my skills in tryouts. Then I had to prove my credibility and demonstrate those skills in games while under pressure. Finally I needed to become a brother to every player on that team, I had to be there and have the backs of every single person who shared the dugout with me. My experiences of joining the team included needing to demonstrate and master the logos, ethos, and pathos skills required to be a member of that sacred brotherhood.
Leadership, just like many other words, deems itself very subjective. Specifically, I believe that it defines itself by using yourself to better others. Examples like Beowulf and Lt. Colonel Hal Moore help identify leadership by setting examples for selflessness and bravery to his brothers of humanity. These men were able to efficiently lead for themselves and, more importantly, for their men by using heroism, altruistic integrity, and charm.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Leadership is not a role which should be readily appointed to someone nor can it be successfully thrust upon the shoulders of just any individual. It is a characteristic that is acquired, developed and honed through a varying multitude of life experiences and lessons learned. This includes personal and professional experiences, forethought and vision and the ability to aptly conceptualize and value the necessary ingredients of positive leadership.
I figured that I had grown about five inches since my freshman year and had gotten stronger it might be time to play basketball competitively once more. When November rolled around I was on the varsity team, but unfortunately my basketball skills was not up to par. It was tough at first, because I was a new face on the team, and the guys on the team had a great chemistry that they had built up throughout the years. After a few weeks had rolled by, I realized that I would not be in the rotation.I told myself that the team’s success is more important than my personal desired statistics.I decided to make the most of my role on the team. It was a tradition for the guys who were not in the rotation to contribute to the game in some way, guys did this by preforming stunts after significant plays and momentum shifts in the game in our favor. This was great because the crowd loved and it and more importantly my teammates fed off of the
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Leaders lead. They lead by example, by demonstrating and living out organizational values, and by being seen. A good leader will never ask a teammate to do something they are not willing to do. Leaders also clearly understand the central purpose of their organization and ensure it is crystal clear to every member of the team...and they are relentless in pursuing it.
Leadership is about organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal (Prieto, 2012). Written below examples of effective communication, team working, delegation, management, planning and organisational skills I have utilized in my placement area:
Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
There are many different things I think of when I think of what leadership means to me. My idea of leadership is to be able to inspire others, get them excited to do something, motivate them and set an example to others. I also think that showing respect to others is a key part of leadership. You don’t just need leadership qualities, but you need to be a successful leader. To me being a successful leader is being able to have people follow you and not disrespect you. If you are a great leader your followers start to respect you more. To be a leader you also need to have certain qualities like being sociable, intelligent, have patience to deal with situations. A leader needs to be motivated or they will be a failure. I think I show leader ship all the time inside and outside of school. “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way (John C. Maxwell).
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Also, I feel like being captain can increase my confidence when I decide to audition. Some qualities that I possess that would make me a good captain include that I am a caring person, I am very dedicated, I communicate well with others, and I have personal discipline. I can have fun and goof off, but I know when it is time to be serious and time to work. I try to have a positive attitude all the time but when I get discouraged with a certain toss, it is definitely hard to keep a positive attitude. I definitely do try to maintain a positive attitude, but it doesn’t always happen.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
According to Shockley and Zalabak (2009) "Leadership is a process of guiding individuals, groups, and entire organization in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals.Leadership is like mapping out where you need to go to win". A Leader is a person who has a strong personality and who has an ability to manage people and work. He is also the person who is able to direct people .Usually a leaders has a lot of attributes that
