Leadership is not a role which should be readily appointed to someone nor can it be successfully thrust upon the shoulders of just any individual. It is a characteristic that is acquired, developed and honed through a varying multitude of life experiences and lessons learned. This includes personal and professional experiences, forethought and vision and the ability to aptly conceptualize and value the necessary ingredients of positive leadership. I have been a classroom teacher with the same school division (and its legacy divisions) for twenty two years. I have therefore, been an active participant and witness to the multitude of changes and growth that have enveloped the realm of education and my school division. My role in the classroom has mainly included English and Arts instruction at the grade 11 and 12 levels. I have considered it an honor to be one of the last teachers involved in a student’s K-12 education and have deeply recognized this important leadership role, guiding our students by way of instruction and by example, through their final educational stretch and empowering them to be leaders themselves. I feel that I have helped to create a society of learners where students are being constantly challenged, where they experienced meaningful personal and educational growth and were empowered to celebrate their accomplishments whether they were big or small. Professionally, I have stretched the limits of my own comfort zone, through embracing changes in curriculum and education and pursuing further learning opportunities. I am proud that although I have become a veteran teacher on my staff, I am the educational technology teacher. Recognition and evaluation of these key ingredients is aptly done by an experienced and visionary leader. These ingredients include but are not limited to: risk taking, persistence, collaboration, creativity, problem solving, effective communication, initiative and passion. In closing, I am excited to embrace an opportunity to further my education through the University of New England as I begin my pursuit to acquire an administrative position within my school division. Due to the demands of school and extra-curricular commitments, the fact that I live outside of a city on an acreage in a province where we often have poor driving and weather conditions, along with the desire to find a sense of balance with my family life, I feel that your online courses will allow me to budget my time accordingly.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
I did not set out to be a teacher nor did I set out to be a leader but today I am both a teacher and a leader in educational technology. Through my studies in the Educational Technology program at the University of Alaska Southeast I have created a solid foundation for that leadership role. My portfolio shows what I have learned in educational technology and my growth as a technology leader. Each artifact was chosen to emphasize what I believe is most important in education for me. They show my commitment to professional growth, my dedication in supporting student learning, and my belief in the strength of collaboration.
Leadership have different meaning for different people & has different meaning in different situation. But leadership comprises of both the research work & practical skills that are necessary to lead or guide other individuals, team or any organization. Leadership is defined as the process of influencing human behavior to achieve organizational goals that serves the public, while developing individuals, teams and the organization for future service. “Effective leadership is a concept both strikingly simple and stunningly complex.”( Schafer, J) “Leadership is not about formal authority; it is the process of motivating, inspiring, convincing, persuading, and in some other way compelling others to follow. ” (Anderson, Gisborne, & Holliday, 2006)
Leaders focus on motivation, and inspiration (Kotter, 1990). Leaders aim to create passion to follow their vision, to reach long term goals, take risks to accomplish common goals, and challenges the current status quo (Bennis and Nanus, 1997) . The leader keeps an open eye on his followers benefits, so people follow the leader voluntarily, and the leader directs the follower by using a transformational style (Bass, 1990).
Vision and goals go hand in hand to help create a successful organization. As a leader, you cannot create goals without having a vision, and cannot realize the vision without setting goals to get there. An effective leader will need to have both a vision for the future, as well as a clear cut set of goals that will help a company to grow and achieve that vision. A leader needs to be committed to and passionate about their vision, and driven to accomplish their goals in order for their vision to be successfully realized.
Teaching is full of ups and downs; as well as many joys and hardships. To say that it is a constant and stable career would be nothing more than an incorrect statement. I’ve seen what and transpire in the classroom from both the perspective of the student and the educator thanks to the internships offered by my FFEA chapter. I’ve seen a silent and calm classroom transform into a roundy and loud warzone. Everyday teachers have to deal with students with no respect, little or no confidence in their abilities, and those who who just don’t want to be taught. I’ve seen teachers get crushed by these hardships and I can’t blame them. But, no adventure worth going on was ever completed without difficulties and hardships. But every adventure also has it’s great moments and positives, and teaching is no different. some Teachers surpass impossible odds everyday in this country by teaching these students and seeing them move forward in the world. It’s the moments when I teacher is finally able to get a student that A or when a student finally understands that he can pass the class if he works for it. Moments like these are when teachers realize why they preserve and never give up on a student. I will never forget how happy my sixth grade math teacher was when I passed my math final. I was struggling with the class the entire year and felt that there was no way for me to pass the class. No matter
Leadership is not about having a title, big office, or having followers. Successful leadership is about having the courage to make the right choices, engage others in your vision and empowering followers to pursue choices for the common good. A great leader will leave an impact on their followers that will last a lifetime. My personal leadership philosophy is shaped by considering various factors, of which the first would be knowledge of one’s self. A leader must know and understand their core values such as, authenticity, passion, service, humor, growth and learning. Successful leaders are genuine and make it safe for followers to speak-up. They make decisions for the common good, communicate expectations, challenge their teams, are accountable, lead by example, reward and provide continuous feedback. I truly believe that successful leadership can be seen through their followers who see and communicate the same vision.
Leadership is something that is heavily prevalent in the workforce and in the world today. Being a leader, in my opinion, takes someone (or a group of people) who is willing and able to lead a few or many people. Not every leader though is successful or leads in a positive way. There definitely exists both good and bad leadership. Many leaders fail while many achieve extraordinary milestones. But everyone, not just leaders, have their pitfalls and rough patches in life. I know that I myself have some weaknesses as a leader, and that is what I want to take some time to reflect on.
Leadership is a word that inspires us in many ways. To lead is to manage, to create and to guide. It has positive meanings for many people who follows. Leadership is an influential word. It is associated with an individual who has earned the respect of others and who leads them effectively and show them the right direction. It should conjure positive feelings in people. Leadership should not produce negative feelings among others. It needs to be able to inspire at all times, and the key to this is, attitude. To make leadership effective it is very much important in part of a leader to have positive attitude. Attitude is everything. In my mind leadership and management are two different entities that if combined together the we have a perfect leader. Now how can we differentiate between both of these words, let me give some examples of leadership and explain about it and then I will give some examples of management and give its examples as well. In my professional life as well as personal life I may have found lots of people who would like to call themselves as leaders and/or good managers however it may not be true.
I have a lot of experience in many things from education, customer service so forth and to end with parenting, so I have several styles of influence, power and leadership and all of which I have used, just not in this order. To influence is the capacity of the power of a person’s things in which they may be compelling force or able to produce effects and actions. Power means the ability to act or the capability of doing to accomplish something, as in the lecture power is the ability to marshal resources. Leadership is the function or position to direct or guide a group or groups of people, or as the lecture states the process of inspiring and guiding others to participate. It is my personal opinion that with all these styles a person still needs self-management as discussed in this semester as well. You cannot have someone that may has influence, power and leadership, yet lacks self-awareness. How can they lead a pack? My previous jobs have many individuals that portrayed to be leaders whom pretended to have power that influenced us, however they lacked self-management, and all of the above.
After examining various philosophies of education, different roles of all individuals in the education process and deeply reflecting on my personal reasons for wanting to become an educator, I have seen the type of teacher I hope to one day become. Through hard work, extensive planning and time, I know that I can become an educator that not only meets the standards expected of them by others, but that can live up to my own personal expectations. As I continue on my journey to become an educator, I will continue to grow and learn more information that will help me once I have a classroom of my own, and I will become the better breed of teachers that electrifies and inspires.
