Nursing Leadership Analysis Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them. Assessment tools can be a good start for individuals to assess their leadership characteristics and skills, such as Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristcs and Skills Assessment (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). These tools may be helpful but its accuracy is questionable. The assessment can overestimate or underestimate an individual’s skills since it is a self-subjective administered assessment that is biased towards the taker. An overconfident person may perceive their skills highly and an under confident person may have low results. According to Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessment, the interpretation of scores for perception of what makes a good leader gave me the following results: good perception of a good leader and the scores for perception of your own ability to lead resulted in low perceived leadership ability for myself (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). With these results, I have concluded that I have low confidence in my leadership skills and ability. This would be an area of improvement needing work on my part. Part of being a good leader is being confident in one’s abilities and skills. Who would want to follow a leader who has n... ... middle of paper ... ...on is important. Obtaining daily shift reports and communicating concerns not only to the nurses and staff but also the administrator ensures our vision for quality care is followed through. I am not only committed to the continuous, lifelong learning and education for myself but also for the nurses through encouragement, schedule flexibility, and company programs such as tuition reimbursement. As I had stated, the entire nursing department is not only certified brain injury specialists (making our company the only alliance in the mid-west with over 60% staff certification), we also belong to the Association of Rehabilitative Nursing program. With any profession and as a fellow nurse, respect and dignity is a must. Even if one is a manager, leader, prominent within the company, respect and dignity provides for productive, empowered, and self-sufficient individuals.
The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Through academics and experience, I’ve concluded that leadership is a “soft” skill, more art than science, and that leadership principles can be universally applied. As a topic of discussion, leadership can be ambiguous and seldom does everyone agree on a single definition. Organizations and the people they consist of crave leadership, even if not overtly. Undeniably, strong leadership is essential to achieving
Leadership has been written about millions of times in the past, and heading in the future, it will be the topic of many debates, books and newspaper articles asking, and in some cases answering the question, “What is leadership?” According to Peter Drucker: “leadership is lifting a person’s vision, raising his performance and building personality”.

Leadership is defined by Northouse (2013) as a transactional experience between persons whereby one individual influences a group of individuals who have a mutual goal. Leaders may hold authority attributed to them by the group, substantiated by how they are regarded, whether or not they have positional authority. In contrast to management, where the goal is to provide order through control, leadership is concerned with producing change through transformation and practical adjustments (Northouse, 2013). Because of the nature of nursing, its obligation to promoting health and healing of people, nursing leadership concentrates change efforts based on human needs and concurrently ponders the needs of administrations largely because they understand the interrelatedness of the two influences.
After taking the self-assessment- Leadership/Personal skills Inventory test, I end up understanding one's own personality is one of the key factors to successful leadership. It is obvious that we need to use our leadership skills to perform the work or job when dealing with other people. Certainly, positioning as a great leader is rewarding when we can find out how to improve our leadership/personal skills to increase performance in a workplace. Thus, we tend to agree that the capability of people to perform the work or job that they do falls into three areas, which are technical skills, intellectual capability, and emotional capability.
In this course I was able to be evaluated by an array of primary, secondary and tertiary members through a survey. This survey allowed for an assessment of what others thought of my leadership strengths and weaknesses. I learned that although I do lead by modeling, it is important that I remember to empower my subordinates and peers so that they may learn to overcome challenges that may arise within their career. This course and survey also compelled me to reassess myself so that I may improve to become the best leader possible.
The general personality traits, which are related to success both in and outside the workplace, are all inherent in my answers given in the Leadership Assessment Quiz. With statements such as, “it is easy for me to compliment others” and “team members listen to me when I speak,” it is apparent I possess these characteristics. Whereas my task- related personality traits associated with successful leadership, such as courage, still need to be developed. Not only do I know this in myself, but it is clearly pointed out throughout the test, with statements such as, “resolving conflict is an activity I enjoy” and “I would enjoy coaching other members of the team”.
Social media platforms, such as Twitter, allow for the sharing of information and interaction between individuals in an online setting (Betton & Tomlinson, 2013). In this paper, I will discuss a leadership assignment that required me to establish a social media network and engage with others online. I will provide a brief overview of how I went about setting up my social network, discuss what I learned about leadership in completing this assignment, and highlight some benefits and potential challenges of utilizing social media as a health care professional (HCP).
While Judge’s comment that ‘no single trait or group of characteristics has been isolated which sets off the leader from members of his group’ (Judge et al. 2002b) holds true, the Locus of Control construct is important as it has been shown to have strong capacity to predict effective leadership. The strong correlation between Locus of Control scores and effective leadership allows individuals to understand whether they are suited to a leadership position; however is not necessarily a definitive test of leadership. Other domains, behaviours and skills are arguably important in predicting effective leadership (Kaiser, Hogan and Craig 2008).
In today’s competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various authors. Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. (Koontz). Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of either formal or informal group in the task of goal setting and goal achievement. A leader is one whose magnetic personality innervates people for some cause. Not by words, but by their actions is the way great leaders influence their followers. They do what they preach.
In addition, an effective leader is always confident and creates shared sense of purpose. Basically, leadership is an attempt that influences and motivates constituents; however, how can an individual assess whether they influence others in a positive way? To help individuals in assessing their leadership competencies, several methods/tools have been developed by scholars; I used Leadership Competences Scorecard Inventory (LCSI) to discover my leadership capabilities.
In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
Leadership is the difference between escaping the cold steel of your enemy’s bayonets and a shallow grave in the desert. The purpose of this assignment demonstrates writing skills and a forum for class discussion throughout the course, including values, attributes, skills, and actions. Effective leadership is something that cannot be measured easily. As a leader, I believe key traits are accountability, responsibility, engagement, empathy, motivation, and open mindedness.
“Regardless of all the attention given to leadership and its recognized importance, it does remain pretty much of a “black box,” or unexplainable concept” and “Despite these inherent difficulties, many attempts have been made over the years to define leadership.8 Unfortunately, almost everyone who studies or writes about leadership defines it differently. About the only commonality is the role that influence plays in leadership”.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
