Edit/Revised One Introduction Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets. In addition, an effective leader is always confident and creates shared sense of purpose. Basically, leadership is an attempt that influences and motivates constituents; however, how can an individual assess whether they influence others in a positive way? To help individuals in assessing their leadership competencies, several methods/tools have been developed by scholars; I used Leadership Competences Scorecard Inventory (LCSI) to discover my leadership capabilities. Many individuals and organizations, uses these tools to evaluate leadership abilities. It is almost similar to a SWOT analysis, which measures strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and treats. I find the LCSI extremely effective because it assesses leadership competencies in five major areas: personal, analytical, communication, organizational and positional competencies. Then, it further operationalizes the five important skills into core qualities that exceptional leaders own. After completing my scorecard, I was able to do my SWOT analysis. It assisted me to identify my strong and weak areas. In this pape... ... middle of paper ... ...ffective communication, I need to be involved in continues act of translation and negations. Leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person. Leadership can best be called the personality of the very highest ability-whether in ruling, thinking, imagining, innovation, warring, or religious influencing. Leadership is practiced not so much in words a it is in attitude and in actions. Their actions leave a long lasting memory in the line of history and lead up to may events that occur today. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. These innate talents help to make up a leader that will succeed and be efficient in carrying out tasks. But, the purpose of this paper is determine what truly makes a leader successful. A successful leader should be considered more on their impact rather than their accomplishments of their organizations alone for they are not sufficient in determining the key to their success .
There are several different definitions of leadership and the act of leading has been studied through many theories. According to Shital Badshah (2012), the study of leadership has been examined in terms of enduring traits, skills, sets of behaviors or styles, and situational properties. The earlier theories are leader-centered and the more recent theories put focus on non-leaders. To accompany most theories, leadership measuring instruments such as the Leadership Trait Questionnaire (LQT), The Skills Inventory, The Style Questionnaire, and The Path-Goal Leadership Questionnaire were developed to help assess leadership characteristics
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
Leadership is strength. Though it is strength, what makes a leader? Is a leader someone who is in front of the line in the game ‘follow the leader’? Technically yes because that is their name in the game, but this essay isn’t about a game. It is about reality. Is a leader made up of a variety of skills, talents, morals, and values? Or perhaps a leader is someone who tells people what to do? Or maybe a leader is someone who can make a difference? To an extent, a leader is built up of all of those possibilities. A leader is someone with a variety of skills, talents, morals and values, and someone who knows how to make a difference, and someone who can guide people into doing what needs to happen. Leadership can’t just be broken up
Assessment tools can be a good start for individuals to assess their leadership characteristics and skills, such as Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristcs and Skills Assessment (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). These tools may be helpful but its accuracy is questionable. The assessment can overestimate or underestimate an individual’s skills since it is a self-subjective administered assessment that is biased towards the taker. An overconfident person may perceive their skills highly and an under confident person may have low results.
“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” (Welch). Willingness to help others, selflessness, and strictness; these are the qualities of a both good and effective leader. Without these qualities, leadership would fail and being a leader would mean nothing.
Leadership imperatives include “setting the agenda”, “taking others with you”, and “doing it the right way” (p.36). The final leadership imperative is similar to father’s sayings. The success factors making up PepsiCo’s leadership competency model include planning, execution, courageous leadership, people development, integrity, operational excellence, and savvy communication (Velsor, McCauley, & Ruderman, 2010). Furthermore, the competency dimensions of PepsiCo’s leadership model comprise of “thinking skills, innovation, strategic tools, establishes priorities, drives for results, change leadership, motivates others, collaboration, builds talent, inclusion, supports others, communicates productively, negotiation, inspires trusts, walks the talk, knows the business, and functional excellence” (p.36). Holistically, leadership skills and capabilities represent the utilization of experiential knowledge, applicable towards achieving goals, objectives, mission, and vision. Implementing effective leadership skills and capabilities will require leaders to approach the leadership discipline with a continuous improvement approach, as new experiences will help to develop practical leadership

When considering the term management, there has always been a common miss conception that this automatically makes an individual a leader. Leadership is only a single element of the management role. Many times managers are more comfortable utilizing a particular leadership style. While this may work well the majority of the time, certain employees or situations may require a different approach. Good leadership requires that the individual recognize the need for change to motivate their employees to accomplish the task at hand or to reach common goals. Understanding the importance of leadership is essential. However, the key element to focus on is what steps can be taken to improve one’s leadership capabilities. For many individuals this may be a difficult question to answer and may only be possible through self-assessment and reflection.
According Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, (2009), “an effective leader was defined as someone with the ability to influence and motivate others not only to perform work tasks but also to support the organization’s values and meet the organization’s goals” (p.70).
