“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” (Welch). Leadership is inspiring others to learn more, do more, and become more. Ineffective fail to possess certain characteristics which effective leaders do. Willingness to help others, selflessness, and strictness; these are the qualities of a both good and effective leader. Without these qualities, leadership would fail and being a leader would mean nothing.
Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. The leader must be effective and successful in creating a strong institution.

In order for this policy to be properly implemented in a medical-surgical unit, the hospital must be in agreement to this evidence-based proposal. The nurses are responsible to abide by this policy, complete the MSAAT during their shift and document their findings on their computer system. The nurse managers are responsible in ensuring that the MSAAT criteria are met and that the scores are accurate by conducting regular patient reviews and nurse
The necessary resources included technology and space for the Nursing Student to collect data and the expertise of the various stakeholders. The space for the student was readily available, and communication between the student and clinic staff was excellent throughout the duration of the project. The resources necessary to meet the long-term outcomes of the project include the extended clinic space and an increased number of providers to form healthcare teams and meet the increasing needs of the growing patient population.
Leading and managing take on different meanings depending on one’s perspective. A registered nurse (RN) in healthcare may not fully internalize his or her role as “leader” on the team, but the responsibility inherent with licensure to practice, understand expectations and fulfilling them, is essential. Effective delegation is an important leadership strategy for any RN to learn and execute, as patient outcomes are ultimately tied to the RN assigned.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
Leadership is about organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal (Prieto, 2012). Written below examples of effective communication, team working, delegation, management, planning and organisational skills I have utilized in my placement area:
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
A formal approval from the management or change control board as well as an informal approval from the unit leadership and co-workers will be sought for implementing this evidence-based proposal. An informal approval from the co-workers and leaders is key factor in successfully implementing changes in an organization. The first step in getting an informal approval is to identify the key stakeholders of this project. In this proposal besides the residents, nurses including admission nurses, physicians, and clinical laboratory staff are the main stakeholders. Since “the Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation (SBAR) technique has become the Joint Commission's stated industry best practice for standardized communication in healthcare”
These five steps are: 1. Nurse to have a critical self-assessment of their own knowledge, attitudes, and skills. The nurse should also obtain a cultural assessment of the patient’s background. The nurse can use subjective and objective findings by both a physical exam and health history. 2. The nurse should set goals that have been collaborated on with the patient, nurse, family, and other health care team members. 3. The nurse then should develop a plan of care. 4. Following the development of the plan of care, it now should be implemented. 5. Finally the evaluation of the plan of care should be done. A key piece to the five step process is including the patient, health care team members as well as the family when establishing a plan of care to be implemented (Andrews,
There are so many aspects to being an effective leader, yet they are so easy to achieve but some leaders do not care to. Effective leaders must motivate, value their employees, solve problems, and be accountable. An effective leader is said to know the organization, the purpose,
According Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, (2009), “an effective leader was defined as someone with the ability to influence and motivate others not only to perform work tasks but also to support the organization’s values and meet the organization’s goals” (p.70).
What does it take to be an effective leader? This is something that has been asked many times over the course of human history. Some might say that having a strong personality and a commanding presence is needed in order to be a strong leader. Others might say that someone who stays on top of everything and keeps order is more effective as a leader. Everyone has their own opinion on this subject and in many regards, they are not wrong. Good quality leadership is something that is hard to possess and is not something everyone can do. Leadership is something that has been studied and analyzed many times, and from these studies, many theories have emerged from them. Each of these theories of leadership has their own benefits and can be useful
