Leadership
Leadership, just like many other words, deems itself very subjective. Specifically, I believe that it defines itself by using yourself to better others. Examples like Beowulf and Lt. Colonel Hal Moore help identify leadership by setting examples for selflessness and bravery to his brothers of humanity. These men were able to efficiently lead for themselves and, more importantly, for their men by using heroism, altruistic integrity, and charm. Beowulf sets off to the land of the Danes for two reasons in mind. Beowulf wants to help his allies and further their friendship, but he also wants to establish his fame even more. The two-in-one approach to his goals progresses his leadership roles in history. When he led his men to fight
When he arrived at the Danish land, Beowulf was a man seeking adventure and glory. Beowulf was famous among his people, the Geats, for his bravery. Beowulf fought in many battles and as a result showed his great character to others.
Initially it is said that Beowulf goes to flight Grendel because, "he could not brook or abide the fact / that anyone else alive under heaven / might enjoy greater regard than he did" (43). In the end he fights the dragon more for the good of his people than for his own pride; he dies relieved because "[he] has been allowed to leave [his] people / so well endowed" (2796).

Beowulf's intention is to honor the allegiance between his father, Ecgtheow, and Hrothgar. When Ecgtheow was alive, he killed Heatholaf, who was a Wulfing, and it started a war. Hrothgar decided to send treasure to the Wulfings, which repaired the conflict and ended the war. The memory of the great Beowulf was then cherished by the Geats.
The character of Beowulf stands as a hero to the ancient Danes because of his actions. He is constantly being cited as a "war-chief" and a "gold-giver" (61). Beowulf has achieved fame through what he has done with his own hands. His identity as a leader is based upon the Danish society’s emphasis on personal action, as opposed to the delegation of responsibility through conscious thought. It is this very sense which spurs Beowulf to fight the dragon: "In my youth I engaged in many wars. Old guardian of the people, I shall still seek battle, perform a deed of fame, if the evil-doer will come to me..." (59). Beowulf derives his power from a strong link to the past. Without his history of glorious deeds, he would see himself bereft of the very power which qualifies him to be a good King. Beowulf’s bravery never comes in to question, he does meet every challenge head-on, with deadly attention. The society which labels Beowulf as a legendary hero, recognizes his actions and his bravery as a integral part of his definition as a hero. Without the society to support th...
Right away, readers encounter the main character in Beowulf as he arrives in Denmark after a long journey from his homeland of Geatland. Beowulf has traveled to Denmark in an attempt to slay the monster Grendel that constantly terrorizes the Danes. “Then news of Grendel, hard to ignore, reached me at home…my one request is that you won’t refuse me, who have come this far, the privilege of purifying Heorot…” (Heaney 409-431). This immediately shows a selfless and heroic act of Beowulf. He has ventured into a country he does not even reside in to help protect the people of Denmark. The hero brings a wave of confidence into a sputtering community of Heorot that desperately needs some assistance in their fight against Grendel. Thankfully, Beowulf slays Grendel and even does so without any weapons, “…it won’t be a cutting edge I’ll wield to mow him down…the monster back-tracking, the man overpowering…an extraordinary wail arose, the howl of a loser…He was overwhelmed, manacled tight by the man of all men was foremost and strongest in the days of this life.” (Heaney 679-789). Beowulf has been living at his home land taking on challenges that others may not have wanted to take on. He has always been a man of action, always looking for adventure that challenges his strength. When Beowulf was told of the rumors that a demon is tormenting Hrothgar famous mead serving hall he accepted the wise men decisions to help him rid them of the demon. This is where step two of the hero’s journey comes into play. There is a call to adventure that affects the hero in some way. Beowulf may have formed a personal connection to the cries of Hrothgar reason being his father was once had history with Hrothgar . When Hrothgar helped Beowulf 's father settle things with the Wulfings Beowulf may have felt a need to repay his father’s debt. When Beowulf and his men finished the feast the king provided in the mead hall that was closed due to Grendel’s blood lust. ¨Epic heroes possess qualities that mere mortals lack. Bravery beyond compare, superhuman intelligence, strength or skills and a driving desire to find success¨(Connie Jankowski). In this part of the story Beowulf and his men have proven that they do contain the courage
On top of just changing physical location, he changes his status among the people of Geatland and Denmark. The physical journeys also bring a level of difficulty to the story. Instead of just fighting battles and becoming heroic in his homeland, he must travel to other places and fight for other people besides his to gain even more fame for himself. Beowulf's first journey from Geatland to Denmark is his first journey of change. Beowulf travels to Denmark to repay King Hrothgar for his
Leadership is when strong leaders show a group of people a clear vision of the right path to go. A leader has important qualities that make them a strong independent person. A leader tends to be open minded when it comes to listening to others ideas to help solve hard times. Being a leader does not mean someone is bossing others around and controlling everything they do. It means they offer help to others and know how to to take charge when the time is needed. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus is an effective leader because he knows how to be adaptive to challenges he faces in life and also caring for other in his crew.
According to Business Dictionary.com, leadership is defined as the individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively. It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.
There are lots of definitions and interpretations for the term LEADERSHIP. One is “A relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people” (Mullins, L.J. 2002, Management and Organisational Behaviour, 6th Edition, FT Publishing, p904). Another popular definition would be, “the process of influencing an organization or groups within an organization in its efforts towards achieving a goal” (Johnson, Scholes & Whittington, 2005, Exploring Corporate Strategy, 7th Edition, FT Prentice Hall, p.519)
Leadership has no consistent definition. In my opinion, leadership basically entails the ability of a person to influence, motivate and inspire others. A leader is someone who is able to create change among people. Examples of leaders are mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther king jnr, prophet Mohammed as well as Jesus Christ who I will be discussing in terms of Christianity.
Leadership means different things to different people. Hence, it becomes hard to define leadership. What one can definitely say is the fact that leaders set the course of action and help their team to move forward. But not all leaders bears the qualities of a good leader and in some extreme cases they are defined as abusive leaders. Abusive leadership occurs when individuals in a formal
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
According to Shockley and Zalabak (2009) "Leadership is a process of guiding individuals, groups, and entire organization in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals.Leadership is like mapping out where you need to go to win". A Leader is a person who has a strong personality and who has an ability to manage people and work. He is also the person who is able to direct people .Usually a leaders has a lot of attributes that
