Communities on become much greater and happier when people put forth their time to volunteer. If everyone were to equally volunteer. If everyone were to equally volunteer, then the outcomes would be exquisite. Making volunteer service be mandatory for the youth, especially for ones in high school, sounds like a great idea. However, there are many risk factors that outweigh the benefits. Forcing the youth could lower the quality of volunteer work. Not only that, but those who try very hard could risk their health by volunteering. Having to be forced to volunteer could lead to low quality volunteer work. As a young student, not all demands made by adults are put to heart. Many students do not want all parts of their life to be controlled by adults. If volunteer work were to be added into their graduation requirements, then they would do it reluctantly. Keeping up high grades and maintaining a good social life is already very pressuring on them, which leads to stress. In a study by the American Psychological Association, it is claimed that “Teens report that their stress level during the school year far exceeds what they believe to be healthy (5.8 versus 3.9 on a 10-point scale) and tops adults’ average reported stress levels (5.8 for teens versus 5.1 for adults)” (Bethune). By adding in mandatory volunteering as another graduation requirement, students will become more stress as they have to organize enough time to maintain high grades, participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, spend time with family and friends, and now do volunteer work. As the stress levels increase, the student’s health will also deteriorate. Furthermore, causing a situation on whether or not helping a person for volunteer hours is more important than your own
