Many schools do not require students to participate in volunteer programs in their communities as a requirement for graduation. Students choose to do different task with their free time instead of putting it to good use. Students waste their free time playing video game, hanging with friends, and sitting at home. Schools should require students to volunteer in community programs because students develop better people skills, students build their resume, and students improve the community as a whole. Student could learn a lot from volunteering in their community. Students could develop better people skills as they help out the community. Students could be able to become better at communicating with different people living in the community. Students should talk to other people; this will make them a more outgoing person. Students may be able to change the community for the better by putting a little effort towards making big changes. The community will become a cleaner place by just focusing on the little things. Students can do various tasks to help improve the community by improving the little things that make the community worse. If students were to volunteer and focus on the little things; they could make the community a cleaner place to live in. I believe that school should require students to have a certain amount of volunteer hours to graduate, however, most students think they should not have to volunteer in order to graduate. Many students do not have the time needed to perform various task to improve the community. Students can use their time for other different tasks instead of volunteering to graduate high school. High school students should not have to serve one hundred hours of community to graduate because they already have enough on our plates as it is. Most teens already have multiple things going on in there lives. Adding on one more extra requirement onto the hectic schedules of these teens will cause an overload. If schools wanted to encourage community service then they shouldn’t force students to do it. Schools should let students know about volunteering opportunities and possibly let them sign up for the school so that it is easier for them to do so if they want
If students want to learn more about their field, they should feel inclined to actually do the work on their own. Also, if a school makes each student complete at least 24 hours of community service to graduate, every student in the school will graduate with the exact same amount, which means hundreds of students are going to the workforce with no advantage over the other.
When a person contributes to their community, they gain more than a just a sense of accomplishment. The experience a person gets in return from helping the community is invaluable. It is a mutually beneficial experience. A person who helps those in need gains knowledge and experience that can help them in future endeavors.
One way to ensure a civically engaged population is to nurture and promote amongst youth and teenagers the value of participating in one’s community, with the hope that involvement will continue into adulthood. Most school districts in Arizona do not require students to volunteer as a graduation requirement. Those that do, necessitate a number of hours to be completed and logged individually; for example, Deer Valley Unified School District in Maricopa County requires eight hours of volunteering during a student’s senior year. Of course any opportunity for one to help society should be applauded – however, this particular process negates cooperative long-term attachment to a beneficial project and does not incorporate knowledge learned in class, or apply meaning in a real-life context. The implementation of Service-learning programs into public school curriculum would uphold useful skills associated with community involvement and citizenship, as well as address problems in real settings rather than do repetitious tasks in seclusion.
Community service is a common service for people to take care of each other and volunteer. People apply to different community services: soup kitchen, taking care of children and homeless people, clinics, churches, schools, neighbor's house and many countless places to volunteer. Some people really enjoy to work at community services while others do not. These community services can be a punishment for criminals because a court assigns them to do so. However, some people do not agree with community service supporters. While some people believe that there should be a community service requirement for high school and college graduation because students need to learn and have experiences there, they are right; on the other hand, a community service requirement should be allowed for two reasons and not be allowed for another three reasons.
A big question asked amongst people sometimes is “Can a teenager make a difference, and if they do is it positive?” a lot of people just brush it off sometimes and think that because they’re young and don’t have the same experience as some older people, they are bound to make mistakes. This is not always the case, as some teens can make a difference, whether it be in large scale that affects the world or in a smaller scale affecting the community or society. There are a couple kids that have make a difference, although some of the things they have done might be greater compared to others, they still have made a difference in where they live and the people in their communities.
Community Service is a service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions. There are two groups who perform community service, and those are criminals and the rest of us. This means that, for the majority of us, performing community service is completely voluntary. It is for this reasons li that I believe that community service should not be mandatory in high school for graduation. The supporters of this act think of it as an ideal society’s noble concept, but it is rather a noble concept trying to force an ideal society. Hey, everyone, I am Jasmine a Junior here at GCU who is about to graduation on December I finish in three years instead of four because I would not take the summers off for a break instead of would be taking more classes to get ahead. My degree is in Business Management and I am coursing taking this class, Human Resources, Strategic Management Taxation and Marriage and Family classes. I live in Phoenix where I plan on staying after graduating school but course life happens so if I have to move because of work or because of my spouse I will. As when it comes to volunteering I do not know yet I plan on finding out what I can do around the school to get a volunteer. Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
In an article written by Linda Saslow titled High School Mandating Community Service for Graduation, she mentions the many pros to mandatory community service. Saslow mentions school districts like Roslyn and Hewlett-Woodmere (1994, para 3) that have started requiring high school students to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate high school. Their goal is to give “kids the opportunity for new experiences” (Saslow, 1994, para 4). Through research conducted by the school districts, they have come to the conclusion that students who would’ve been “too shy to volunteer have admitted that they were glad they had been forced”. A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
John F. Kennedy said, “Every person can make a difference and every person should try.” Some examples of making a difference through volunteering are park and street cleanups, local school projects, serving food at your local food pantry, and helping with youth activities. Graduation requirements should include 100 hours of volunteer service because students would be apart of making a difference. Volunteering helps students grow socially and helps students figure out their plans for the future.
Throughout my school years I have been fortunate enough to see how sharing what i’ve learned in my life makes a positive influence in their lives. In 2015 when the Butte Fire happened I went to the Good Samartian Church and helped put together food baskets and sorted and delived clothes to people in need. I volunteered at my church food pantry on Saturdays on numerous occuations. I did girl scouts for 6 years where I went into neighborhoods and talked to them about donating canned foods to the food
Contrary to this opposing view, helping others is the best feeling that one could ever have. What is a volunteer? Volunteer: a person who does work without getting paid to do it (Merriam, Webster). The act of volunteering gives people a sense of responsibility and makes one feel needed and useful to society one way or another. Students should be obligated to give back to their communities through acts of community service. It should be viewed from the perspective of paying their dues back to the community, after all the education of these students is free and it is the community that pays for it. Community service should be a mandatory high school graduation requirement because it builds ones character, limits the rate of teenage delinquency, and establishes a path for a better future as an individual.
