I interviewed both a teacher and a parent regarding school and community partnerships. School and community partnerships are vital because taxpayers have a vested interest in what their dollars are being used for, effective communication contributes to public confidence in schools, and students benefit when all stakeholders play a role in education. The teacher I interviewed is a Kindergarten teacher in a school that is very diverse and works with many students and families that live in poverty. The parent I interviewed is the mother of five children, but I asked her to focus on her youngest son who is in fourth grade when answering the questions. The school he attends is a small private school.
When I interviewed the Kindergarten teacher she was very eager to share all of the partnerships that her school is participating in. She stated that the biggest challenge facing schools today is the increasing class size, poverty, and cuts in funding. As a result, “sage funding” was put into place to help with smaller classes, but is now being cut from the La Crosse School District. In regards to poverty, she says that schools can help get families in touch with community organizations that can provide them with some of their needs.
The school that she teaches at engages families through a variety of activities and volunteer opportunities. The school has family nights, which include healthy cooking demonstrations, dance and exercise classes, and other family building activities. She also shared with me that in the school there are a lot of volunteering and field trips taken throughout the year that gets the students out in the community. As a result, she believes that the school her child attends is doing an effective job of communicating with parents and families because the resources are available to parents and families to use, it is just a matter of them wanting to use what is available to them.
She believes some of the challenges contemporary families are facing are the economy, healthcare, loss of employment, lack of basic necessities, and broken homes. Despite these challenges, schools and families can work together to make schools stronger by creating a positive learning environment and show the student that they are there to help the student in any way possible. She also states that it is important for the teacher and parent(s) to be on the same page and support each other in regards to learning styles and techniques.
As a future educator, I have reflected on how my own personal experiences have formed me into the person that I am today, and how I can use my experiences to help my future students. I have also reflected on how I can information about family systems as well as risk and resiliency to better understand families that I will work with in the future, as well as how children with special needs impact a family’s structure. I believe all of these components are essential for teacher, student, and family collaboration and success.
“When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.
She mentions how schools would have to increase their spending by around 1,000 dollars per student to achieve the same results that are gained through parental involvement. Geoffrey Canada’s Harlem Children’s Zone is a great example of how parents can be involved in their child’s early education. Canada created this project as a way to help low income parents rear their children toward the goal of them being ready and having success in school. The program starts at birth and follows the children to college and operates on the principle that each child will do better if the children surrounding them are also doing well. By entering their children into this program, the parents are helping to ensure that the child is on the same level playing fields as all of those who enter school. Parental involvement is key in a child’s education, but for parents who are working multiple jobs or do not speak the same language that is being taught at the school, it can be very difficult. Lower income families may struggle with parental involvement because of a lack of resources or time. The language barrier also creates a divide in the communication lines between schools and families. Parents who cannot understand what their child is learning are not going to want to be as involved. They won’t be as willing to talk to the teacher or other parents if they don’t understand what is happening because of a language or educational
Helping with homework and discussing topics in which the child may be having difficulty with can help them perform better in school. Parents need to be more aware that the time spent at school may not be enough for students to receive proper teaching instructions. There should be some interaction with studies outside of school hours. Unfortunately, for students who are at a socio-economic disadvantage often struggle in school, particularly if parents lack higher levels of education. In the book, Savage Inequalities: Children in America’s school, Kozol (1992) believed that, “the poorest parents, often the products of inferior education, lack of information access and the skills of navigation in an often hostile and intimidating situation to channel their children to the better schools, obtain the applications, and help them get ready for the necessary tests.” While parents are receiving the necessary information regarding their child 's education, they are not responding because they either did not understand the purpose nor did they investigate it. This engagement must be to involve the stakeholders in the school. The district and school leaders must encourage the community belief that if the school is successful the surrounding community will be successful. Through this partnership the time, talent and treasure of the stakeholders must be solicited to ensure the success of the school. Reciprocity of this investment should be given as well. Students could be required to participate in community service within the neighborhood or take responsibility for cleaning parcels of the area.
Effective partnerships between families and school emerge from a mutual trust, respect and understanding of each other’s values and goals. By maintaining such partnerships, we create a healthy environment for children to develop. All families have something unique to offer and educators need to recognize this and make the most of it by incorporating all families into the school community.
In my quest to find a school for my kids, I was disappointed by what my options were. Being that my kids and I are a low-income family we also have limited housing options, were there are the better schools. I decided to give the local area schools the benefit of the doubt and enroll my two kids, Mikkayla and Pharoah. Over the school years I made notes on the things that I saw and learned about the schools and my neighborhood. My goals are to establish ways to improve the school system and help bring about change in the school’s neighborhood.
Diversity is important in education. Also, communication with parents is important. However, some students may have two moms or two dads, but they should still be included in their child’s education. As a child, there are several things that can impact a child’s life. One impact many children go through is family divorce. This impacts the child’s education because the mom feels she should be the only one involved or vice versa. However, the goal of this article is to prepare teachers to respond to the needs of all students, no matter their background. Also, it wants to make teachers aware that all students’ needs are different no matter their family structure. Each and everyday there are several different cultures entering this country or getting married. As a teacher, it is important to understand each student’s background. This is a good idea because a teacher does not want to offend a student or parents. A teacher’s job is to have a diverse classroom no matter the sexuality (Page 84) or the social status (Page 84) of families. A teacher is there to provide instruction, but also support. For example, a student’s family may be poor and the student comes to school with torn clothes and shoes. Parents who have had negative experiences in education may feel less inclined to be involved in their children’s education (Salend, 2015, pg. 178). LaRocque, Kleiman, and Darling (2011) identified parental involvement as a vital key in student success (pg. 117). If families feel uncomfortable because of prior discrimination or experiences with school, it can decrease parental involvement (Salend, 2015, pg. 178). In order to remedy these problems, schools can try a variety of solutions. Salend (2015) suggests inviting important extended family members to school events (pg. 178). This could help involve the patriarchs and matriarchs of the family and gain trust. Educators should try to address the elders first in order to show mutual respect. In addition to showing respect on a personal level, schools can gain trust by displaying respect in other ways. Making school facilities available for community activities makes the area seem more accessible and welcoming. It can also help parents build more positive experiences with the educational system and overcome the negative experiences. Furthermore, schools should decorate with various cultures in mind (Salend, 2015, pg. 178). By providing quality out-of-school time programs, family engagement and support, and connections to other community institutions and agencies we can help children and families overcome obstacles. As I reflect on my twenty-three year teaching career and begin my new career as a literacy consultant, I feel I have an ethical responsibility to the teachers and students in my school districts in order to make positive changes for the good of society. Palmer’s quote, “If our experience in the company of strangers is to deepen our sense of civic community and help us cultivate democratic habits of the heart, the lens of compassionate imagination is crucial” (p. 116). As I embark on this new chapter in my life, I plan to put on my “lens of compassion” and will strive to be an ethical and moral steward for my community.
A teacher today needs to have an ability to relate to and create partnerships not with their students, but also families, administrators and other professionals. This ensures that all persons involved with the education of the student are on the same page. All involved then work in harmony and help each other achieve the common goal of educating the student in the best possible way for the best possible result. (Wesley, 1998, p 80)

There are many benefits to teachings having a good relationship with the student’s family, guardian, or parents.
