Part 1: Analyzing Current Involvement Programs
“When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.

...bs are broken into smaller parts and separated by the sport or activity their student participates in. Deer Valley High School is a wonderful school to work at and to teach at. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community leaders all work together to provide the funding and the know how to help the students become future leaders in the community. Deer Valley is a family and family always does what they can to give the next generation all the tools they need to be successful in life.

That broader conception of school allowed those schools to better support the students and address social issues that prevent students from accessing their full potential. This conceptual shift can only be spurred by a clear vision of “good education”—which then caused an improvement in their community’s education
Parents are expected to be active partners in their children's high school experience at Truman High School. Students are known by their teachers, mentors and each other and “each student has a personalized, individual learning plan that he or she creates with a teacher, parent(s), and mentors from businesses and the community.” Students stay with the same advisor throughout high school, and advisors are responsible for “ensuring that students learn a wide range of skills and take part in rigorous endeavors.” ...
Money will not solve or make this problem go away, no matter how many social workers are hired. Schools will succeed despite their financial circumstances if they have the basic components of motivated students, parent support, caring teachings, and strong central leadership. While this is the typical model of a suburban school system, Wilson High School proves that it can work anywhere. When ones thinks of urban public schools, overcrowded classes, underpaid teachers, and a lack of resources often come to mind. The fact is these problems can happen anywhere. While the environment at Kennedy could never be compared to the worst DC high school, the assumptions made against these schools are the same. By erasing these notions and confronting the problems one by one, we will be one step closer to reaching equal education for all.
Sharon spent weeks driving around the Bayou High School community hoping to gain a better sense of where the students lived. Sharon’s observations of the neighborhood provided evidence of a racial, social, and economic divide within the community. Upon Sharon’s arrival into her new position as principal at Bayou, she discovered a number of challenges related to students, staff, parents, and academic achievement (Stader, 2006).
At this time, I became a group leader in an after-school program for a 3rd-grade class. This was my first time working with children and as imagined, it was a tough transition. The students were Latino and African American, living in poverty stricken neighborhoods with a dysfunctional home life. The program focused on students who were at risk of retention. A large number of students were below average and had been recommended to receive extra academic support. As a result of my time spent working and learning with the students, I choose an educational path.

The support that students from Middle School 244 receive from their teachers and counselors more than just surprise me. I would personally expect that level of compassion from a high school guidance counselor at the earliest. I believe it is that kind of support that will rebuild a school community, reshape students, and revitalize hope into not only the students but also the school’s faculty.
So as to improve the K-12 education, the United States needs to redesign the high schools. The initiative by the president to redesign the high schools is significant in encouraging the schools to use the available resources. Schools together with their partners should take into using the resources that exist effectively. These resources are in the local, state and the federal so as to transform the experience in the high schools for the youth through energy of the whole school redesign. This effort of redesigning the high schools will help challenge them and their partners in rethinking learning and teaching. The education system has been a controversial issue among educators. Requirements of school do not let student choose what they want to study for their future. It’s a big issue to force student study specific curriculums, which don’t help them improve, and what they like to create something. Educators choose a general system for education to all students which based on general knowledge. Intelligent or genius students have to be in that system of education, which doesn’t let them improve their creativity. Educators attempt to change that system to make it better, but their changing was not that great to be an example for the world. Also, did that change qualify education system to compete other systems or not? In some examples and reasons have been made me agree with some of points from Gatto’s and Edmunson’s and disagree them.
Adolescence is a time when individuals are experiencing important changes to their physical self and identity. Unfortunately, this is also a time of great adversity and stress, especially for those living in less fortunate situations. The Ascension After School Program is nestled in the Union Hill area of Worcester, which greatly struggles with violence and poverty. The elementary school students who attend this program come in with the weight of the world on their shoulders, and it is the job of their friends, the tutors and Sister Pat Murphy to help alleviate some of that. The program helps to promote overall adolescent health by facilitating relationships with peers and mentors, giving students a strong connection to something in their community
Since I have started my teaching career, I have only ever worked at one school. This school, a private, faith-based community school in New Jersey, is a k-12 institution that boasts just under four-hundred students. The majority of the students are in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and the numbers dwindle from there. Most students leave the school at the end of eighth grade. This year, there are just twentyeight students enrolled in our entire ninth through twelfth grade high school program.
Afterschool programs can improve a child’s academic achievement. Programs like the Boys and Girls Club of America, developed Project Learn: The Educational Enhancement Program. This program was created based on five major components: homework help and tutoring, learning and leisure activities, parent involvement, collaboration with schools and encouragement (Chung, Ah-Me, et al.) Students in this program increased their GPA, school attendance and study skills.
The school that she teaches at engages families through a variety of activities and volunteer opportunities. The school has family nights, which include healthy cooking demonstrations, dance and exercise classes, and other family building activities. She also shared with me that in the school there are a lot of volunteering and field trips taken throughout the year that gets the students out in the community.
