Volunteering has a positive effect on both the individual and the surrounding area, and should be required by high schools in order to improve the student and community. High school students volunteering in their community is beneficial to all who are involved. Teenagers who are involved often meet new people and build relationships throughout their town. Therefore, volunteering should be required high school due to the impact that it has on the community and student involved. Volunteering is an important aspect of community because it completes an otherwise ignored job and helps struggling individual. Volunteering also helps the students by improving their college resumes and building character. Even though students may not think their services are required, there is always someone in the community who needs help. Community tend to thrive and become more positive with the involvement of teenagers. Therefore, making a difference in a district can start with only a few people. When there is better communication within a community it is easier to understand what the wants and needs are for a society to better function. Finally, it provides services in many different forms. For instance, in a local sense volunteers can benefit many sectors such as public works and transportation; public safety, health, and human services; parks and recreation; and support functions (Young). Community service is often times done to receive a good assessment on a transcript or in a job interview. I’ll admit that at the start of my Senior year, I only wanted to get service hours because it would help me receive the twenty-hour minimum required to stay in the Beta Club. But after spending time with people in my community and giving back, I learned that helping others is a lot of fun and rewarding at the same time. Contrary to this opposing view, helping others is the best feeling that one could ever have. What is a volunteer? Volunteer: a person who does work without getting paid to do it (Merriam, Webster). The act of volunteering gives people a sense of responsibility and makes one feel needed and useful to society one way or another. Students should be obligated to give back to their communities through acts of community service. It should be viewed from the perspective of paying their dues back to the community, after all the education of these students is free and it is the community that pays for it. Community service should be a mandatory high school graduation requirement because it builds ones character, limits the rate of teenage delinquency, and establishes a path for a better future as an individual.
