In order to be part of a humane and civilized society, giving back to the community is important. While preparing students for the future, High School is also where they learn to become a global citizen. One of the major ways to involve young adults in community activities is through volunteerism. In order to truly fulfill the education the school system promises, students must continue to volunteer in their community and carry on their strong quality of life for more generations to come. As a result, organizations will be benefitted and students will take on a new sense of responsibility. When working on campaigns and getting to see real-life results, students will discover how their actions can make a difference within the community. There is only so far books and classrooms can take you to, as there is much more to education than learning facts written in a textbook. Education is learning how to live life selflessly by giving back. Unfortunately, it seems that younger generations are unaware of what takes place around them. However, students sometimes need an extra push to reach out to their communities. This can all be fixed by volunteerism, as it will undoubtedly broaden their visions and allow them to become better citizens by helping out those who are not as fortunate. Next, helping those in need will certainly create a better environment in the community for everyone. In 2013, 62.6 million Americans volunteered to help their communities, 7.7 billion hours of service was produced, which had an estimated value of 173 million dollars (https://www.livingtreecharities.org/value-of-volunteer-time). Volunteer activities bring people together who might not have had contact with one another without the help of the project they devoted themselves to. According to Blair Student Service Learning Coordinator, Robert Hopkins, "The greatest part of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours is that students learn transferable skills that can be applied to a variety of unique situations" (www.legacy.com). Through elementary, middle, and secondary school, students learn about natural disasters and environmental issues in the world, as well as biodiversity conservation and endangered species. For example, a student with a distinct interest in the environment will test their knowledge to the limit when they volunteer with organizations such as the Ontario Environmental Directory or the Lake Ontario Waterkeeper Association. Even when activism is not directly connected to schoolwork, students learn universal practical skills like the importance of helping out their community members when they feed the homeless or help clean and construct for natural disaster victims. By completing this requirement, students also acquire the opportunity to volunteer in fields they are interested in--allowing them to experiment with possible career paths. Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
The author’s purpose was to persuade her audience that volunteering should not be mandatory. She reviews the history of the beginning of the program that was initiated by President Clinton, who apparently believed community service should be mandatory for graduation.
Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.
This school should not require 100 hours of community service as a graduation requirement because of the busy lives of teenagers, the pressure of graduation, and loss of enthusiasm for community service. Schools should encourage community service but this is not the way to do it.

People need to contribute time to important causes like community service, and volunteer work. On a few occasions, I volunteered at a food pantry, and it was a very humble, and valuable experience for me, an experience I will never forget. It was heart breaking to see all the people in need that are lacking the most essential things in life, like food. There were people waiting in line for about two hours before we even opened the door, just to obtain a number. I could hear people talking in line, while I was packaging the canned goods, and perishables. When the other volunteers opened the door, and started calling out numbers, then we proceeded to hand them their bag of food, they had this forever grateful look in their eyes. It was like the gratitude in their eyes pierced, and warmed my heart at the same time. It was a bitter sweet moment, and to hear it over, and over, was overwhelming. Community service hours are a significant issue to all students around the globe, as they are taking a substantial amount of time away from their lives scouring for some kind of work to do. This is especially a problem for those who do not live near any public organizations, and do not have the schedule to do any work for them. Most students go searching around their neighborhood asking if their neighbors have any work for them, which does not help anyone academically. Thus, most community service hours that are done don’t relate to their academic classes or technical area.
Ever wonder why you didn’t get that job you wanted? How would you feel if you knew a recent high school graduate got that job because they were more qualified than you? High schoolers that do community service, that is required to graduate, are becoming more certified for jobs because they get all kinds of different experiences. Of course any opportunity for one to help society should be applauded – however, this particular process negates cooperative long-term attachment to a beneficial project and does not incorporate knowledge learned in class, or apply meaning in a real-life context. The implementation of Service-learning programs into public school curriculum would uphold useful skills associated with community involvement and citizenship, as well as address problems in real settings rather than do repetitious tasks in seclusion.
Community service has become a requirement for an eighteen year old student to get admitted in an university or to pursue a paying job. Although I am involved in many community service, I personally believe that it should not be a requirement. A student should desire to work voluntarily. He or she should not be forced to perform the community service to make their college application look better. There are several learners who are against volunteering. The high school students have various things to see and learn. They should be able to help others by their own choice. They should not perform it just to graduate. Pressurizing can lead to have short-tempered apprentices which is not good.
Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences.
