Participating in community service gives students the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive effect on society. Community service enables students to acquire fundamental skills and knowledge, and in addition, gives support to the people who require it most. As a matter of fact, during childhood, my parents frequently introduced me to volunteerism. I like to believe my parents did this because volunteering teaches people of all backgrounds compassion and understanding. I’ve been able to carry this lesson with me, even when I chose the college I would attend. Texas Southern University has a core value of creating partnerships and performing services that enrichment our community. That value encourages …show more content…
Being a part of the American Chemical Society, it is important to communicate our knowledge to the community. In order to accomplish this goal our student organization partnered with the Judson Robinson Jr. Community Center. The partnership consisted of holding monthly science camps for the local kids. During the camp, my peers and I performed different science experiments in order to promote STEM while at the same time occupying the time of the kids in a productive manner. This community service project is service for the kids within the community, however, it also helps Texas Southern University. I feel that through this service we are leaving a mark and making a memorable impression on the hearts of the kids. Through this service, we may recruit some kids who aspire to become future tigers. Above all, I truly feel good about myself because we are helping others and causing …show more content…
With this position, I volunteer at every function my college holds. This include leading tour around campus, sitting on committees, homecoming preparation, and so much more. I will say the most important volunteering I perform as an ambassador would be tutoring. Tutoring allows me to literally impact the students of my HBCU community with my service work. I help a lot around midterms and finals. I find during those times students need help the most. I tutor in math and chemistry. While helping others, I’m able to enhance my knowledge. I really enjoy this because I get to help my fellow students obtain their degrees. This is so important because we need more educated people in the community so that we can build a stronger
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
I volunteer in a lot of activities, especially considering I am a girl scout. We organize many drives for things such as food and sports equipment and everybody enjoys themselves while doing it. I volunteer at church sometimes, contributing my time to making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry, instead of doing pointless things at home. Being a good person isn’t just about being kind to everyone around you. You have to put those great things about you into use and help your community. That’s what makes you a great choice for the National Junior Honor Society.
People become involved in community service for different reasons and it is up to the individual to realize if it is worthwhile and why they are helping others. Community service brings a nation together. Every country wants its community to be disciplined and work for change. Community service is the best way to inculcate responsibility into individuals. This is where I come in, as a volunteer, as an activist for a change and assistance. I have been inducted and a member of three unique clubs with a core purpose of community service and assistance to others. I have been apart of CSF, California Scholarship Federation, for three years and counting. Each system it is required for obtain fifteen hours of community service, whether be with an organization or school based activity. California Scholarship Federation is an exclusive community of college bound scholars who share resources, provide peer tutoring, and pursue success through community service and academic achievement. I became inducted into NHS, National Honor Society, my sophomore year. Since then I have been an active member participating in every community service opportunity our club participates in. In addition to the club's community service, we as members are required to obtain a certain amount of community service outside the club in order for our membership to not be revoked. NHS
Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
It’s incredibly crazy to compare my life this year to where I was three-hundred and sixty-five days ago. As a senior in high school, I was so worried about the future and if I would survive, so to speak. Here I am now, experiencing college and gaining a valuable education in more than just a survival mode, but in a completely growth oriented mode of thriving. Campus involvement has been the best encourager for my education outside of your typical classroom setting. My main involvement is with Georgia Southern’s Office of Leadership and Community Engagement. I currently live in a Living Learning community on campus called Lead and Serve. This community is run through the Leadership Office which we call OLACE. I am housed with like minded individuals who have a passion for growing their leadership and doing community service. We have weekly meetings where we discuss social issues and prepare events for the local Statesboro community to get involved in and for us to serve. I am also invovled in an organization called Southern Leaders. Upon completion of this course and club, I will graduate with a leadership seal upon my diploma. Since being on my beautiful campus in south Georgia, I have completed over one hundred hours of community service. OLACE has also provided me the opportunity to take non-credit leadership classes in Self-Leadership, Collaborative Leadership, Living the Change and other various leadership classes I have taken advantage of. I have gained the knowledge of my leadership style and abilities and how to best use those when leading others. This week, I will “graduate” from one of my leadership classes with an extreme honor: an engraved Georgia Southern gold name tag. Having a gold name tag on campus is one of the...
Community service is something that I have always engaged. In college, I worked with chemically dependent children as both a caretaker and a mentor. After I graduated, I taught at-risk children in a community youth outreach program. To remain involved and aware of the focus of my studies during my first year of law school, I volunteered at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center teaching youth their basic legal rights. Essentially, we strove to empower kids by providing practical information about the legal system and to help them develop more favora...
One way to ensure a civically engaged population is to nurture and promote amongst youth and teenagers the value of participating in one’s community, with the hope that involvement will continue into adulthood. Most school districts in Arizona do not require students to volunteer as a graduation requirement. Those that do, necessitate a number of hours to be completed and logged individually; for example, Deer Valley Unified School District in Maricopa County requires eight hours of volunteering during a student’s senior year. Of course any opportunity for one to help society should be applauded – however, this particular process negates cooperative long-term attachment to a beneficial project and does not incorporate knowledge learned in class, or apply meaning in a real-life context. The implementation of Service-learning programs into public school curriculum would uphold useful skills associated with community involvement and citizenship, as well as address problems in real settings rather than do repetitious tasks in seclusion.
Every time I do some kind of service – I have the opportunity to learn new ideas, discover new perspectives and I've have grown as an individual. By giving back I like making people feel as though they matter, and it gives me a good feeling at the end of the day because I feel I have made a difference. I grow as a person each time I do volunteering. Some people do volunteering because they have to, but I do it because I want to. I love volunteering.
Community service is a common service for people to take care of each other and volunteer. People apply to different community services: soup kitchen, taking care of children and homeless people, clinics, churches, schools, neighbor's house and many countless places to volunteer. Some people really enjoy to work at community services while others do not. These community services can be a punishment for criminals because a court assigns them to do so. However, some people do not agree with community service supporters. While some people believe that there should be a community service requirement for high school and college graduation because students need to learn and have experiences there, they are right; on the other hand, a community service requirement should be allowed for two reasons and not be allowed for another three reasons.
Community service has become a requirement for an eighteen year old student to get admitted in an university or to pursue a paying job. Although I am involved in many community service, I personally believe that it should not be a requirement. A student should desire to work voluntarily. He or she should not be forced to perform the community service to make their college application look better. There are several learners who are against volunteering. The high school students have various things to see and learn. They should be able to help others by their own choice. They should not perform it just to graduate. Pressurizing can lead to have short-tempered apprentices which is not good.
Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences. But, with a little push from student organizations, local nonprofits and passionate individuals, volunteerism and community change can start to take a front seat and become not just an opportunity, but also a priority in the lives of young people.
Community service: What a wonderful opportunity for students! A chance for our younger citizens to learn responsibility, experience the satisfaction that comes with helping others and to acquire new skills.
If we open our lives and give service to those less fortunate than ourselves, we allow our hearts to receive immeasurable happiness. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it is a great or small need, we become a part of their life and can help alleviate heavy burdens. Making time to help people in need creates opportunities for us to develop new and lasting relationships. Serving our fellowmen allows the best in each of us to shine through and we can become examples to our children.

Volunteering: The great experience no one can afford to lose. Opposers say, mandatory community service can have several negative effects on students. “Community service hours are impressive additions to college applications and can provide a student with a great sense of accomplishment; however, the mandatory hours will have many negative consequences” (Cydney Hayes, 2012). Many students are barely even passing the regular school curriculum, and opposers believe that adding the additional load of mandatory service hours will discourage teens from even wanting to graduate. Also mandatory service is usually assigned by a court as punishment to delinquents. “In a small number of cases, community service is required by the court system as restitution for delinquent offenses” (Planty and Bozick, 2006).
