In fact, many students' relationships with their families has become weaker because they have a lot of work to do, and they must to volunteer to graduate. Students not only have to volunteer but also have a school homework to do. They need to study for exams, and some have jobs after school. Mandatory volunteering makes students isolated from their family, relatives, and friends. Moreover, in his the new York times article "The logic of Mandatory Volunteerism", Ain adds an example of parent who disagree with volunteering. He gave an example of a port Washington parent she said," it was wrong to impose community service on youngsters." In other words, parent acknowledge that force children to volunteer is not beneficial because they raised them and, they know how to deal with them besides they do not communicate with them. Another fact is that in their journal newspaper article Community Service Do mandatory service requirements for students violate their right, Bullock and Dennis D estimate that parents right. They admit an unneeded demand service which a student volunteers in it is useless, and it leads to decrease the right of parents. They claim," it violates the constitutional right of parents to have primary authority over their children's education." To put in other way, parents have the right to educate their children, too. However, mandatory volunteering breaks this right and it make parents to
The author’s purpose was to persuade her audience that volunteering should not be mandatory. She reviews the history of the beginning of the program that was initiated by President Clinton, who apparently believed community service should be mandatory for graduation.
Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.
If schools wanted to encourage community service then they shouldn’t force students to do it. Schools should let students know about volunteering opportunities and possibly let them sign up for the school so that it is easier for them to do so if they want
It helps them to see that they are making a difference in the children’s lives and that the kids are able to get past all of the cynicism that surrounds them and strive to achieve a better life. 4. Kim, in the United States, grades are not the only factor in evaluating school applicants and job candidates. From Rhodes Scholar selections to college applications, excellence in other areas such as leadership, volunteer activities, sports and arts is equally important (p82-90). In American schools, students are encouraged to do volunteer work. So much so that many schools have guidelines for how much time students are expected to spend serving in the community. Children learn the value of giving from an early age. Volunteer activities is one way Americans feel a part of things and share the goal of serving and contributing to build their communities. From neighborhood watch programs to environmental issues, Americans do not wait for the government to initiate action: they take action to bring about the changes they desire. Therefore, Americans view volunteer work as a way to teach children and young adults values such as cooperation and teamwork, dedication and work ethics, equality and social justice, leadership, generosity and compassion for
If students want to learn more about their field, they should feel inclined to actually do the work on their own. Also, if a school makes each student complete at least 24 hours of community service to graduate, every student in the school will graduate with the exact same amount, which means hundreds of students are going to the workforce with no advantage over the other.
Instead of allowing dropouts to rely on government assistance, high schools should implement volunteer programs to keep students in school.
What is community service? The dictionary definition is: ‘Voluntary work, intended to be for the common good, usually done as part of an organized scheme.’ ("Collins English Dictionary" ) People all over the country are doing community service for church activities, scouts, and because its what the judge ordered. Why not have the students do this as well, there's definitely no shortage of service to be done.

Memory errors occur when a person remembers events that never really happened or those memories that are remembered could be different from the way they actually occurred. In some cases people are strongly influenced while in other cases people simply block their memories. The articles, “Adaptive Constructive Processes and the Future of Memory” by Daniel L. Schacter and “Creating False Memories” by Elizabeth F. Loftus both give insight of false memory and memory errors. In this paper I will give a brief summary of both articles. In addition to the summaries of bother articles I will discuss the case of NBC news anchors that involves false memory and what could be done for an individual to decrease the amount of memory errors that they have
A community service requirement should not be allowed to be adjusted in students’ schedules while they are in school because
Individuals with lower incomes will not want to spend their time volunteering for free when they could be working. They will not see volunteering as beneficial, but rather time wasting. “To be sure, some of these wage gaps can be attributed to the fact that lower shares of blacks and Hispanics are college educated. U.S. workers with a four-year college degree earn significantly more than those who have not completed college. Among adults ages 25 and older, 23% of blacks and 15% of Hispanics have a bachelor’s degree or more education, compared with 36% of whites and 53% of Asians.”
In an article written by Linda Saslow titled High School Mandating Community Service for Graduation, she mentions the many pros to mandatory community service. Saslow mentions school districts like Roslyn and Hewlett-Woodmere (1994, para 3) that have started requiring high school students to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate high school. Their goal is to give “kids the opportunity for new experiences” (Saslow, 1994, para 4). Through research conducted by the school districts, they have come to the conclusion that students who would’ve been “too shy to volunteer have admitted that they were glad they had been forced”. This is good because it’s bringing students together and really opening them up to new
As it’s becoming mandatory all around the Us, many kids will just be doing it to graduate high school. Even without the requirement of doing community service, many students will still go and volunteer. Yet, once they reach high school and they’re forced to do it, they might actually feel trapped. Many students and adults alike might feel pressure to do well when they are required to do something, whether it’s for school or for work. With the looming thought of it being required, students might actually not be enjoying their volunteering hours like they used to.
Contrary to this opposing view, helping others is the best feeling that one could ever have. What is a volunteer? Volunteer: a person who does work without getting paid to do it (Merriam, Webster). The act of volunteering gives people a sense of responsibility and makes one feel needed and useful to society one way or another. Students should be obligated to give back to their communities through acts of community service. It should be viewed from the perspective of paying their dues back to the community, after all the education of these students is free and it is the community that pays for it. Community service should be a mandatory high school graduation requirement because it builds ones character, limits the rate of teenage delinquency, and establishes a path for a better future as an individual.
