In an increasingly competitive world, organisational structure and effectiveness within companies are key concepts. Effective leadership skills can enhance the growth and success of an organisation as well as on an internal level, create a healthy and functional work environment for employees. It is important to recognise the importance of good leadership skills and how they affect the working process in an organisation. This essay will identify leadership and provide definitions and how it is assessed. It will furthermore identify the commonly known traits of a successful leader and importance of emotional intelligence. Lastly, this essay will explain ‘contingency theory’ in order to gain an understanding on other factors, besides personal traits and characteristics, that can influence the effectiveness within a leader. Defining leadership All organisations require management and management in turn, require a certain level of leadership abilities. The long-term success of an organisation depends on its ability to take advantage of the competences and knowledge of its employees. In an increasingly competitive environment, organisations must motivate its employees and encourage initiative within the organisation. This new organisational climate requires more than a traditional manager and organisations must find ways to develop leadership skills in order to increase effectiveness and to stay competitive. In any organisation leadership is often argued to be a critical factor for success or failure. It can also be said that a leader can be a manager but a manager is not always necessarily a leader (Gandz, Crossan, Seijts & Reno 2014). It is therefore vital for organisations to recognise traits and techniques that defines a success... ... middle of paper ... ...rson & Rowland 1973, p. 407). Leaders can be divided into two categories of relationship-oriented and task-oriented leaders and depending on the situation and setting, one of the two will be more suited for the specific environment. The task-oriented leaders are focused on result and the relationship-oriented leader is more effective in communicating and creating relations and long-term goals. The relationship-oriented leader is one that would potentially possess a higher level of EQ, due to the empathetic aspects. It is therefore argued that depending on the leadership style and the situation of the organisation and the setting that makes one leader more successful than another. This means that one leader may have attributes that will be more suited for a certain setting or organisation and will therefore work more effectively towards the goals (Hunt 1967, p. 302).
The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Through academics and experience, I’ve concluded that leadership is a “soft” skill, more art than science, and that leadership principles can be universally applied. As a topic of discussion, leadership can be ambiguous and seldom does everyone agree on a single definition. Organizations and the people they consist of crave leadership, even if not overtly. Undeniably, strong leadership is essential to achieving
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
First when a leader focuses on the strengths of the employees the odds of the employee being engaged will increase dramatically. This compares to chapter one of our text book in that it says an effective leader is one who helps group members attain productivity. The second key is that the most effective leaders surround themselves with the right people and maximize their team. The book suggest when leaders try to be good at everything they will not be great at anything. Although it is often preached to be well-rounded this results in mediocrity. So instead trying to be good at everything, find and know your strengths and hone those skills to be a more effective leader. The authors say there are four domains of leadership with thirty-four themes that break-down under the domains and these explain the actual strengths of the leader. The domains are executing, influencing, relationship building and strategic thinking. In our text book all but influencing are listed as one of the ten roles of leadership. ...
Leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person. Leadership can best be called the personality of the very highest ability-whether in ruling, thinking, imagining, innovation, warring, or religious influencing. Leadership is practiced not so much in words a it is in attitude and in actions. Their actions leave a long lasting memory in the line of history and lead up to may events that occur today. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. These innate talents help to make up a leader that will succeed and be efficient in carrying out tasks. But, the purpose of this paper is determine what truly makes a leader successful. A successful leader should be considered more on their impact rather than their accomplishments of their organizations alone for they are not sufficient in determining the key to their success .
The idea of what’s morally right and wrong changes within each culture whether an organizational culture or between individuals. However, the best leaders are the ones who do what’s right and best for the organization. During this research paper I will attempt to define the term leadership style and its concept. Moreover, I will attempt to describe three leadership styles, the development and the process one would follow to modify their leadership style. When pertaining to myself, I never saw myself as a leader but I will attempt to describe my leadership style and the advantages and disadvantage I would have in a business environment.

Leadership is not defined by position. Leadership is an extraordinary responsibility given only to those willing to exude selflessness, decisiveness, and wisdom. CSM William R. Hambrick, Jr is an accomplished leader that embodies the values, attributes, and competencies that I aspire to convey to my subordinates. The impact that CSM Hambrick has had on my career and leadership philosophy is immeasurable. His far-reaching legacy is one of confidence, sound judgment, and empathy.
Suddenly, some companies become extremely successful, while rest of them unfortunately remains a failure. There can be off-course a lot of reasons for this failure but one of the main reasons is lack of leadership qualities. There are many s...
The Great Man theory postulated that great leaders are born not made. This theory attempted to identify the set of attributes that all natural born leaders have in common. There is indeed truth to the belief that some people inherently have more leadership gifts than others, however, it has now become clear that leadership is actually learnable. This perception birthed the trait theory of leadership that examines which individual characteristics should be pursued to lead effectively. The premise of this concept is if you possess certain traits and attributes people will follow you. The weakness of this theory is that it identified dozens of traits but no single set emerged as ideal for all circumstances. Closely related is the skills theory of leadership, as in trait theory it attempts to identify a key set of attributes but in this case practical skills rather than staple qualities of a leader. The premise of the skills theory is that if you want people to follow you, you need technical, conceptual, and persuasive skills along with diplomacy, affability and visionary acuity to see the big picture and to think strategically (Day, Fleenor, Atwater, et al, 2014). Next, there is the Situational Leadership theory which argues that there is no one size fits all model. Certain traits, skills, and styles fit better in one situation than another so a leader must adapt. Transactional leadership and transformational leadership are two theories that can be considered together. Transactional Leadership proposes there is a reciprocity of behavior between the leader and follower and people will follow based on the incentives in place. Therefore, the leader’s job is to find the right combination of rewards and
This paper describes about my leadership strengths and areas for growth/future study. It also included how these qualities are used in my daily work routine, self-assessment results and a brief explanation on Individual style in leadership.
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
One of the biggest problems for Americans right now is the direction in which our country is headed due to poor leadership from our government. This problem has been affecting the American people deeply over the last few years and is only going to get worse. The effects of this poor leadership are the the growing debt in our country, poor health care regulations causing high premiums and forcing punishments upon people who self pay, illegal immigrants at an all time high, not enough money spent for education, and terrorist groups causing fear to Americans. These problems have been caused by the recent politicians we have elected for not only president but all of the branches of government. The best solutions to fix these problems are electing new government officials and a new president that will make changes and fix the problems that need fixing. The other alternative solutions would be the American people taking action and making the government realize that we want change. These problems have to be addressed now because the longer they are put on hold the worse the problems could be become.
It is not possible to only use one type of leadership style. I need to learn to read situations better which will allow me to adapt my leadership style accordingly. It is also important to consider the individual follower when determining whether to be more task-oriented or relationship-oriented. As I found out from the experience I explained above, people’s day-to-day mindsets and feelings should be taken into consideration in order to be the most successful. It is impossible to always come to the correct conclusion on how to approach a situation, but taking the time to consider it is guaranteed to reduce the likelihood of making the wrong
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
