In this book, the authors Tom Rath and Barry Conchie examine the question “What are the keys to being an effective leader?” To answer this question they had a team that reviewed data collected from Gallup polls. The data came from interviews from 20,000 senior leaders, over a million teams and more than fifty years of Gallup Polls of the most admired leaders in the world. The authors then had the team do a study of more than 10,000 followers to find out why they follow the influential leaders in their life. They found three key things in the research. These are, first, investing in strengths, second, surrounding themselves with the right people while maximizing their team and third, understanding their followers’ needs. First when a leader focuses on the strengths of the employees the odds of the employee being engaged will increase dramatically. This compares to chapter one of our text book in that it says an effective leader is one who helps group members attain productivity. The second key is that the most effective leaders surround themselves with the right people and maximize their team. The book suggest when leaders try to be good at everything they will not be great at anything. Although it is often preached to be well-rounded this results in mediocrity. So instead trying to be good at everything, find and know your strengths and hone those skills to be a more effective leader. The authors say there are four domains of leadership with thirty-four themes that break-down under the domains and these explain the actual strengths of the leader. The domains are executing, influencing, relationship building and strategic thinking. When hope is absent employees lose confidence, they become disengaged and feel helpless. When a leader can instill hope, especially during difficult times, it gives the followers something to look forward to and to see a way through chaos. The most effective leaders know better than to try to be someone they are not. They should always be searching for opportunities to reinvest in their strengths. Leaders need to stay true to who they are and make sure they have the right people around them. The book says those who surround themselves with similar personalities are at a disadvantage to those who are secure enough to be surrounded by people who strengths will compliment theirs. Although some of the wording is different a lot of what it is in our textbook was found to be true from what was reported in the Strengths Based Leadership book.
There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself. Great followership is a reflection of great leadership. In this, the follower is just as important as the leader in the relationship. Many great leaders have asserted that a leader with even a modicum of understanding of what drives their subordinates can take their organization to previously undreamt-of heights in creativity and productivity. Collins does not disabuse us of this notion, he does however add that the follower is indispensable agent in this interplay between leader and follower.
According to Dr. Karlene Kerfoot, “research tells us that the leadership traits of the person in charge work either as a magnet to attract, retain, and inspire or as a force that repels” (Kerfoot 2006, p. 25) and in support of this statement she makes reference to the fact that many persons go to work for a specific company with enthusiasm and eagerness and ultimately leave disappointed because of the management. “People are generally hungry for personalized leadership that speaks to their hearts”, says Dr.Kerfoot and this type of leadership motivates them to accomplish task and complete projects they deem difficult or impossible (Kerfoot 2006, p. 25)
When it comes to the topic of leadership, most of us will agree that we are curious as well as critical of our leaders, and their actions. Political and religious leaders are often under close scrutiny. As influential leaders they set the vision, tone and goals of any organization. Hence, a leader 's , behavior and leadership style are constantly scrutinized and if appropriate, their leadership traits ought to positively impact followers. According to Northouse (2012), “A leader affects and is affected by followers and both leader and followers are affected in turn by the situation that surrounds them”(p.5). Efficient leaders are remembered by their visions and actions.
The idea of what makes an individual a good leader; a manager or a worker is generally based on what are his/her perceived strengths. In Clifton and Nelson (2010) book “Soar With Your Strengths”, the reader is encouraged to focus on their strengths rather than their weakness to excel in school, in business, or in the workplace (p.19). In an organizational leadership role, management must understand the strengths and weakness of their subordinates. Successful organizations identify and improve upon their strengths. Simultaneously, effective leadership also acknowledges the existence of weakness while effectively isolating it. More often than not, unsuccessful organizations fail to achieve success because they focus on their faults rather than their strong suits.
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.

Gallup organization is an analytics company that helps to solve issues for employers and organizations, but was it known that the father of positive leadership psychology purchased Gallup Inc., this owner is Donald Clifton. Donald Clifton (1924-2003) was a professor, author, and businessman revolving around the concept of positive, strength psychology. Job satisfaction is one of the most important factors in employee performance. Leadership must ensure stakeholders are fulfilled in their work, thus providing a level of intrinsic motivation as they become more engaged (Lawrence, 2014). This is something that comes from top leadership and is only achieved through proper management empowerment. Successful leadership understands that they cannot possibly control every minute detail of their organization. A good leader will invest in subordinate team members, molding them into problem solvers and future leaders by empowering them as decision makers. This concept will also build trust and the more that people trust their leadership, the more they take risks, make changes, and keep organizations and movements alive (Kouzes & Posner, 2012).
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
To become a truly effective leader, one must encapsulate the various behaviors related to the aforementioned course learnings in his/her persona and demonstrate such behaviors daily. This course has allowed me to identify four behaviors that all leaders must portray to be effective. The first of which is that a leader must be inspirational. To do so, a leader must set the appropriate vision and direction for the organization and provide a path to achieving defined goals. Additionally, a leader must induce the proper levels of motivation so that each employee has sufficient incentive to work towards the organization’s goals. As discussed in the class, motivation can be accomplished by factors such as rewarding hard work and providing the correct opportunities to employees. While these are motivating in that employees desire to be fairly compensated and to be doing work they deem valuable, inspiration comes more from organizational culture. A leader will be inspirational by setting a tone that appreciates each employee’s contribution, no matter how small in scale it is. Further, employees are inspired when they work collaboratively in a group setting and can capitalize on individual strengths to drive organizational goals.
We all can become effective leaders by becoming experts in our field, by working on our leadership skills such self- confidence, determination, ability to understand other people’s needs, emotions and goals, ability to motivate other people to achieve their full potential and more. The journey to great leadership is appearing more straightforward than ever before, and there is no deficiency of resources showing what is need to be improved to become a great leader. Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Leaders will no matter what have an influence on our world. They have missions, dreams and ambition, and with these things they are bound to go far. For leaders, what makes these dreams come true is having strong qualities such as leadership practices, values and strengths. If developed and learned how to use correctly, these are what take leaders to the next level and accomplish great things. In the following paper I will talk about leadership in our ever-changing world, explore my leadership practices, values and strengths as well as elaborate on the goals I have made to challenge myself as a leader.
