Introduction
What does leadership mean in the context of educational leadership? Many definitions of leadership in education co-exist, attesting to the complexity and multi-faceted phenomena of the concept (Elwell & Elikofer, 2013). Leadership is one of the most observed and least understood organizational and psychological areas of study. Despite volumes of research and numerous theories, no one theory of leadership emerged as the sole predictor of the success of educational leaders. The current body of knowledge about leadership consists of narrow definitions of leader effectiveness that are disconnected from their context (Latham, 2014). The Great Man theory postulated that great leaders are born not made. This theory attempted to identify the set of attributes that all natural born leaders have in common. There is indeed truth to the belief that some people inherently have more leadership gifts than others, however, it has now become clear that leadership is actually learnable. This perception birthed the trait theory of leadership that examines which individual characteristics should be pursued to lead effectively. The premise of this concept is if you possess certain traits and attributes people will follow you. The weakness of this theory is that it identified dozens of traits but no single set emerged as ideal for all circumstances. Closely related is the skills theory of leadership, as in trait theory it attempts to identify a key set of attributes but in this case practical skills rather than staple qualities of a leader. The premise of the skills theory is that if you want people to follow you, you need technical, conceptual, and persuasive skills along with diplomacy, affability and visionary acuity to see the big picture and to think strategically (Day, Fleenor, Atwater, et al, 2014). Next, there is the Situational Leadership theory which argues that there is no one size fits all model. Certain traits, skills, and styles fit better in one situation than another so a leader must adapt. Transactional leadership and transformational leadership are two theories that can be considered together. Transactional Leadership proposes there is a reciprocity of behavior between the leader and follower and people will follow based on the incentives in place. Leading organizations of school administrators offer educators various opportunities to encourage educators to become leaders. No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) has mandated that leaders be better prepared for the task of providing quality education to all. NCLB “… is forcing all educational stakeholders to face the weakness of contemporary school leadership and is making it impossible to ignore the need for higher quality principals” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). It is believed that all educators can be and are leaders in their own right. A leader is a visionary and has the ability to inspire others to aspire to greatness. Of the numerous opportunities that are offered, those that are most beneficial include but are not limited to leadership training programs, professional development, and creating shared leadership opportunities for teachers to become leaders. The systems “…that produce our nation’s principals are complex and interrelated – and governed by the states. Each state establishes licensing, certification and re-certification” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). States use the ISLLC standards “…as the framework for preparation programs and in service professional development of school superintendents, principals, and other leaders” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.3).

Leadership has been written about millions of times in the past, and heading in the future, it will be the topic of many debates, books and newspaper articles asking, and in some cases answering the question, “What is leadership?” According to Peter Drucker: “leadership is lifting a person’s vision, raising his performance and building personality”.
Have you ever had a leader that inspired you to develop your own leadership traits? “A leader is someone who demonstrates what’s possible” (Mark Yarnell, 2015). There are numerous leadership styles. Each of the numerous leadership styles can be beneficial if utilized in an appropriate means. I have chosen three leaders and their unique leadership styles to discuss in this paper. The unique styles that will be discussed are situational leadership, transformational leadership, and laissez-faire leadership. I will also discuss each leader’s approaches, their fundamental leadership principles, and how each leader used their style within their profession.
According to this theory great leaders are born, not made. These great leaders have inherited few or several favorable traits which distinguishes them from common people. For example, Napoleon, Mao-se-Tung are considered to be natural leaders, who have had all qualities of leadership built-in them(Biju 2010). A colleague of mine recently made a statement that got me thinking; he said that ‘Leadership is achieved through the state of mind of the leader and the followers. By state of mind, John proposed that leadership should be situational because only then can the right theory or approach be applied to bring about the right result. John also mentioned that if leadership is situational, flexibility becomes attained as and when change or modification is required.
