The idea of what’s morally right and wrong changes within each culture whether an organizational culture or between individuals. However, the best leaders are the ones who do what’s right and best for the organization. During this research paper I will attempt to define the term leadership style and its concept. Moreover, I will attempt to describe three leadership styles, the development and the process one would follow to modify their leadership style. When pertaining to myself, I never saw myself as a leader but I will attempt to describe my leadership style and the advantages and disadvantage I would have in a business environment. Before defining leadership style one must define exactly what is leadership? There are many interpretations of leadership as well as leadership styles but one common term pertaining to leadership is the ability to influence others to achieve a common goal or vision. Leadership is not an innate characteristic, but a complex suite of competencies, personal attributes and vision that requires development via education, exposure to work and issues, role modelling and mentoring with existing leaders. (Huges, Ginnett, Curphy, 1999) Edwin T. Cornelius III defined leadership style as the broad, characteristic way in which a leader interacts with others across in various situations and occasions. (Cornelius, 2006) However, many researchers would agree that leadership style is merely traits and they can change within an organization or between different situations. Annick M. In today’s society this particular learning style may be effective in creating a positive corporate culture and can lead to high morale among team members. The only challenge I may have is the slow decision making process when trying to include members in the decision making process. However, the advantage is that I would work with team members to make decisions which in return should increase their productivity because they are more involved in the process. The democratic leadership is also my preferred style because I’m more of a team player versus an autocratic leader. I would not demand my followers to do any task, I prefer to motivate my followers to success.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.

Most scholars focus on delineating between transformational, transactional, democratic, autocratic, and laissez-faire leadership. “While not abundantly clear in the literature, logic suggests that some managers may embrace a blend of leadership styles” (Vann et al., 2014, p. 32). As an example, a school principal may practice more of an autocratic leadership style in one situation and more of a democratic leadership style in another situation. There are four different leadership styles, which are autocratic, consultative, participative and free-rein. A leadership style is the driver in the success or failure of any project or work environment. Some of these styles have more strengths than weaknesses while others are weaker but the peculiarity of the organization is what matters the most.
There many different leadership styles that people use in their professions. One person may have an authoritarian style where as another may use a democratic leadership style. A person could also let the people do what they want employing a laisses faire type of leadership. The type of leadership one decides to use depends on how much control they need in making a decision. The leadership styles are on continuum ranging from demanding all the control, to taking in the opinions of others, to letting people make their own decisions. My personal leadership style involves using the transformational leadership.
Secondly, the way leadership is defined and understood through one’s influenced theoretical stance (Bolden, 2004). Those who view leadership as the outcome of individual characteristics possessed by a leader, whilst others perceive leadership as a social development that emerges from organisational relationships. Both are subject to co-exist as the development of organisational culture is largely related to its leadership, as well as the cultural aspect of an organisation has impacts on the development of its leadership. (Bass and Avolio, 1993).

In this paper I will look at the four major leadership styles, their characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and in what situations a particular leadership style is desired. Additionally, I will look at my leadership style and how I acquired this style throughout my career.
The key points are presented for establishing my leadership style. With this, I am able define my personal leader style, identify personal factors and social qualities necessary to be a successful leader. A leader is someone who is able to guide others to obtain goals in various situations. It is a joint effort that operates for the overall success of the company. A leader can also adapt to the needs of their followers by building relationships and sustaining connections using the three layers of social identity.
