Lunch and Recess Time
Do you think that students should have longer lunch and recess time? I think that kids need free time to talk to their friends and socialize. Kids also need enough time to exercise everyday to keep them focused and their energy level low. Another reason they need to have a longer lunch/recess is because kids need time to eat and shouldn’t be rushed at lunch.
I think students should have more time at lunch and recess because they need time to socialize and talk to their friends. When kids talk to their friends and interact with others, it keeps them happy throughout the day and releases stress. Giving time to socialize actually increases the focus that students will have during class. Kids tend to not talk as much in class if they’ve had free time to themselves to talk to who they want to talk to. They also become more on task because they don’t have the want or need to talk to someone else. Students need to learn to have social and communication skills. If they don’t interact with others throughout the day they won’t develop these skills that they will need in life.

Studies have shown that kids should be active for an hour or more everyday. Physical exercise has been proven to increase grades and scores on tests. Physical exercise is correlated with improved mental functions. Exercise gives better blood flow to the brain and more fit kids have had higher grades and a GPA. Brain activity and brain development are also enhanced by physical exercise. Being physically fit has shown less kids are fidgety and are more focused during class. Being active means you have to have a long attention span to practice for long periods of time just like being in school and having to be focused on your class. All school provide lunch for their students and some even provide breakfast. One of the points “The Crucial Role of Recess in School” makes, is that when recess is before lunch the children tend to eat more. This makes less waste of food and money for the school.
If children were asked what their favorite part of the school day is, the majority would answer: recess. Why is this? Is it because recess helps them let off steam, or perhaps to help them settle disputes with other kids. Even though kids love it, elementary schools are starting to remove recess from the daily schedule. School boards believe recess has no value, besides giving youngsters a break. However, scientists have discovered recess helps kids focus better in class, as well as, preventing obesity. Children have an attention span of only twenty minutes. How could they possibly pay attention for seven hours a day with no recess in between? In addition to that, children are not accustomed to physical activity outside of school, so therefore, how are they supposed to stay healthy? With these two counterarguments towards the dismissal of recess, why do elementary schools still refuse to have recess? Because it is proven to help children focus on schoolwork and prevent obesity, all elementary schools should have recess.
Schools all over the country are considering, if not already applying, the removal of recess for elementary school students. Having recess has scientifically proven to play a substantial part in the social development of a child, their physical health, and the amount of attention they pay in the classroom. For example the Tennessee Board of Education says, "It is the position of the NASPE that all elementary school children should be provided with at least one daily period of recess of at least 20 minutes on length" (National Association for Sports and Physical Education). Keeping recess in schools could help lower the childhood obesity rate, help children to be more attentive in class, and assist in the development of their much needed social skills. These aspects are essential to academic healthiness and to your child succeeding academically. Removing recess could cause a dramatic decline in the graduation rate in the U.S.
We should not have longer school lunches. Longer school lunches has a great impact on everyone in school, it makes this issue worse. Students need what is best for them, which they already have. Short school lunches helps improve learning skills and lets students comprehend better. Our lunches are good as they are right now. We should not allow students to leave during school lunch.

There are eight hours in a school day, so why sit in class for most of it? A lot of kids need to let some of their energy loose. A lot of kids would act better if they had recess. Recess can help with a lot of things like for example, kids who have ADHD need to move around. If they don’t then they get really wild and could interrupt class. In my opinion, middle school should have a set time for recess because it would get them awake, they've been sitting in a classroom for a long time so the need to move, and gets all their extra energy out so kids wouldn’t be as disruptive as they were before.
Studies have shown that kids gain more knowledge with a break before they learn in class. Students are constantly stuck in class, sitting down all day. Without a break, students get restless and are never able to relax. Students should have breaks during the school day because they won't be sitting in a chair all day, it will allow them to clear their minds, and they will retain the information better.
Alas, it is very important that students are fed and have enough energy throughout the day, especially if they are in after school sports. Consequently, it can be very dangerous for students not to eat lunches and then go and do their sport. Lack of energy can cause you to faint, be extremely dizzy and other serious side effects. Even though the snacks in the school store are delicious and can fill you up for a few hours, they lack nutrition and won't give you the proper energy you need to stay focused in school. I don’t know how this would affect the school in a negative way, except that student may be tardy. Tardiness is a problem but so is not getting enough (or anything) to eat at lunch. The school could make a two strike rule, first tardy is a warning second is a detention. In conclusion, I think that the smartest option for our school is to allow its student to have open

Open lunch, a waste of money and a risk of your student’s life. It is safer to be at the school rather than be out roaming the town. If a student was late to get back they would hurry and perhaps make poorer decisions then they would if they weren’t in a hurry. They could easily get hurt by a car or have a collision with another vehicle. What I believe would happen if we opened the open lunch up to more people, they would hurry and eat fast and start to mess around. They could vandalize or something else. They could even get involved in drugs like smoking marijuana or some other drugs. Every kid knows that they could never do drugs in school they would be caught almost instantly. So they would just wait till lunch and then do them. Plus we all know that as a high school student you’re not exactly rolling in the cash so you will most likely be getting gas station or fast food, not the healthiest food on the planet. They would be destroying their arteries without even worrying about the repercussions. Even though they would get exercise and fresh air, should sophomores and juniors be allowed open lunch?
The break tends to make the entire atmosphere a little more peaceful and less stressful. Recess also allows the students to get away from classroom. An activity in the middle of the day clears the students’ mind of all work inside the classroom. Although schools could make it to where healthy foods are the only thing they eat during lunch, healthy foods won’t give as much nutrients as junk foods may. Students get regularly around 20 to 30 minutes to eat their lunch. There have been studies that found that students who get less than 20 minutes to eat their lunch, compared to students who got at least 25 minutes in lunch, got 13 percent less of their entrees and 12 percent less vegetables because they weren’t able to consume their whole lunch. If schools were to have longer lunch periods students would have more time to consume all of their food in order for them to make it through their day without falling asleep in class and being able to stay focused. Imagine being back in elementary school at recess. Children running around the playground, laughing and yelling and playing together. In middle school and high school, there is no recess. Today, we need it more than ever. Recess should be allowed after elementary school because kids need a break- this break includes physical activity, which stimulates imagination and cooperation.
