Teaching Physical Education can have immediate health benefits as it helps normalise body weight and body composition. Physical activity also promotes positive mental health. Both immediate outcomes may be useful in motivating physical activity practices so that they have long term benefits. One of the main benefits of physical activity is that “it keeps children involved and that it invariably makes you feel good.” (Brown, W.J. & Brown P.R., 1996, p19). Getting the correct amount of Physical activity in school hours will decrease the rates of obesity and will reduce the risk of diabetes, asthma, heart disease and other health related illness’. Regular exercise for children also helps their cardiovascular health and bone development. There is also evidence that Physical Activity has a positive effect on mental health in children, including reducing anxiety and depression and improving their mood. ‘Beyond 2012 – outstanding physical education for all’ makes recommendations for schools and the Department for Education to secure the quality of PE in schools and draws out improvements made to PE and sport over the last four years. The Department of Education are looking on making improvements which have generated from the London Games in 2012. They are hoping to make a new strategy for PESS to help pupils become more engaged in sporting activities in their school curriculum. The Government are advising class teachers to raise their expectations by setting more challenging and competitive PE lessons, so pupils increase their performance to a higher level. Also, to engage them in regular and high intensity activities for the full period they have been given in their timetable. As previous studies have shown, when schools were visited, teachers set activities that were too easy for children which led to boredom and lack of motivation and had no planned extra curriculum activities for the pupils. However, schools with the best PE provision had excellent PE lessons with extra curriculum hours set up for them. In 2014, there was a funding of £360,000 to train primary teachers to specialise in PE. This was to ensure children developed ‘a sporting habit for life’. The value of physical education P.E. teachers bring to schools and their students. P.E. has an effect on everyday life. With this in mind I feel P.E. is highly valuable. Physical education activities have development in mind. Children can participate in a variety of activities and are encouraged to achieve overall wellness by continuously staying active.
A physical education program must include three domains: cognitive, psychomotor and affective ways of learning. In the cognitive domain, students will learn information of how to keep themselves physically fit and how to live long and healthy lives. In the psychomotor domain, students will meet fitness standards and develop the proper skills to participate in all movements patterns through physical activities. In the affective domain, students will be taught how to work with and respect one another while participating in physical activity. They will also learn values through this domain such as, being on time to class, dressing properly, and learning what work ethic is through physical activity instead of just going through the motions. In order for a successful physical education curriculum to be implemented these three domains must be evident on a daily basis through the use of objectives. Physical activity enhances children’s quantitative development within middle childhood, supporting growth toward healthy strong people, physically and psychology. Middle childhood is documented as being between the ages of six to ten years old. A lack of physical activity affects children across all areas of development; it is not restricted within the domain of physical development. Discussed within are the expectations of motor development within middle childhood, the benefits of physical activity and the consequences of prolonged inactivity. Along with how a student’s physical development facilitates or restricts development in other areas and how the learning environment can accommodate and support the physical needs of students.
Over the past decades our culture has changes dramatically. To which our nation was once a physically active nation. Yet now it seems that society discourages physical activity. The human race has been dependent on automobiles, discouraging people to walk or bike, increasing the chance of a poor life-style. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Students playing and working in a team together develop social skills, teamwork, achieving goals, and development of self-esteem. In my opinion, physical education is very important. I also feel that we should do whatever to get as much exercise as possible. That does include PE classes. At first thought, mostly everyone will assume that PE is just a class to get the easy way out, so a harder class isn’t assigned. I feel like it can be very beneficial, though. Physical education time is being cut in schools to give more time for students to focus on core courses such as Science, Math and Reading. Some districts have eliminated the course or do not even provide it. These courses, although are very important, should not take away from a student’s well-being.
