Have you ever taken the time to determine if you have the “juice”? According to the Urban Dictionary’s webpage, the term juice refers to having respect and credibility on the street. However, as a leader, we are always hoping that we have this same respect and credibility in the work environment. A good way to determine whether or not you are, or will be, a good leader is to take a leadership assessment quiz. A leadership assessment quiz is an excellent tool to aid in determining one’s possible effectiveness as a leader. I have taken three different assessment quizzes to see where I am when it comes to being an effective leader. These quizzes outlined many of my strengths and weaknesses, but this paper will only detail two of those strengths and one weakness. According to the assessments, I am strong in transformational leadership and motivating people to deliver the vision. On the other hand, my weakness is providing support and stimulation. These are the leadership attributes that I will be focusing on, as they will definitely aid me in my future plans as a successful leader at home and …show more content…
Wow! We discussed this type of leadership in class, so I was really drawn in when I saw that I scored very well in that area. Transformational leadership, according to Mindtools.com, “is a leadership style where leaders create an inspiring vision of the future, motivate their followers to achieve it, manage implementation successfully, and develop the members of their teams to be even more effective in the future” (How Good Are Your Leadership Skills?- Assessment Quiz). According to our textbook, DuBrin says “a transformational leader is one who brings about positive, major changes in an organization” (p.77). With these two definitions, I can definitely see the Dominant area of my DCIS assessment. People with this attribute usually tend to focus on results, problem-solving, and the bottom-line. I am definitely
“..the transformational leader articulates the vision in a clear and appealing manner, explains how to attain the vision, acts confidently and optimistically, expresses confidence in the followers, emphasizes values with symbolic actions, leads by example, and empowers followers to achieve the vision (Yukl, 2002)
Assessment tools can be a good start for individuals to assess their leadership characteristics and skills, such as Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristcs and Skills Assessment (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). These tools may be helpful but its accuracy is questionable. The assessment can overestimate or underestimate an individual’s skills since it is a self-subjective administered assessment that is biased towards the taker. An overconfident person may perceive their skills highly and an under confident person may have low results.

The first leader assessment focused on distinguishing the various skills of my leadership type, specifically concerning technical, human and conceptual skill. I chose this assessment because I believe is it important for all leaders to be self-aware of these skills, as all three are needed and continually improve these skills. From this assessment, I
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
Leadership is an important aspect of all businesses, especially the health care industry, and without good leadership, patient care and outcomes may be affected. Effective leaders and managers use various styles and theories and adapt these with consideration to the characteristics of their workers and of the environment. A self-assessment was done that asked a series of questions that generated a picture of the quality and what style of leader that I am. This picture will be compared to existing leadership and management theories along with a few examples. Also, my leadership style will show the actions and behaviors required for effectively leading an ideal workforce and workplace environment. There are many surveys that help one to
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
I see myself developing into this type of leader by working to create valuable and positive change and empowering others to become leaders that also create valuable and positive change that they believe in. I will empower others to gain a sense of identity and self to the mission, be a role model that inspires others, challenge others to take ownership of their work, and provide understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of others. To be a transformational leader I will need to display the ability to communicate clearly, listen, collaborate, empower, build strong healthy relationships, and provide others with intellectual stimulation.
The general personality traits, which are related to success both in and outside the workplace, are all inherent in my answers given in the Leadership Assessment Quiz. With statements such as, “it is easy for me to compliment others” and “team members listen to me when I speak,” it is apparent I possess these characteristics. Whereas my task- related personality traits associated with successful leadership, such as courage, still need to be developed. Not only do I know this in myself, but it is clearly pointed out throughout the test, with statements such as, “resolving conflict is an activity I enjoy” and “I would enjoy coaching other members of the team”.
My leadership style is transformational leadership which is to inspire and motivate followers through interpersonal relationships (Sullivan, 2012). It is effective leadership with each team member working toward a common goal and not letting personal self-interest become the focus (Sullivan, 2012). My goal is to motivate the members to be accountable and focus on the goal of the organization and make a positive impact in the community.
Transformational leadership is one of the most popular leadership styles. According to Kendrick (2011), “Transformational leadership involves four factors: 1. idealized influence, 2. inspirational motivation, 3. intellectual stimulation, and 4. individual consideration.” These four factors make transformational leadership have an impact on followers. The goal of transformational leadership is to cause a positive change in individuals, help motivate them, and develop a leader within each individual.
In addition, an effective leader is always confident and creates shared sense of purpose. Basically, leadership is an attempt that influences and motivates constituents; however, how can an individual assess whether they influence others in a positive way? To help individuals in assessing their leadership competencies, several methods/tools have been developed by scholars; I used Leadership Competences Scorecard Inventory (LCSI) to discover my leadership capabilities.
Many times we can get so busy and wrapped up in our jobs that we may lose sight of how we are actually performing as a leader. Self-Assessment exercises offered in the reading material offer a valid look into strengths as well as opportunities for improvement. The first assessment that began to make me think about my leadership role deals directly with social motives in the work setting.
This paper describes about my leadership strengths and areas for growth/future study. It also included how these qualities are used in my daily work routine, self-assessment results and a brief explanation on Individual style in leadership.
Transformational leadership focuses on what the leader can accomplish instead of his personal characteristics and how his relationship with others. This leader “helps to bring about major, positive changes by moving group members beyond their self-interests and toward the good of the group, organization, or society (Dubrin, 2007, p. 84). The essence of this leader is to develop and transform people.
