Self-Analysis Assignment
For this self-analysis assignment, I chose the assessment tools that addressed the skills approach, the behavioral approach and transformational style of a leader, which I perceived to be significant in shaping my leadership style. These tools will provide significant insight to my primarily leadership style as well as the component areas of leadership improvement.
The first leader assessment focused on distinguishing the various skills of my leadership type, specifically concerning technical, human and conceptual skill. This was important to assess and it increases self-awareness and can be adjusted easily through conscience practice and efforts. This competency assessment centered around task behavior and relationship behaviors. Task behaviors are those that aide in accomplishing goals and helping followers and other group members achieve goal and objectives. (Northouse & SAGE, 2016, p.71). Relationship behaviors are behaviors that help followers feel more secure and comfortable with themselves and others in the work environment (Northouse & SAGE, 2016, p. 71). On this assessment, my technical score of 46 was only one point higher than my relationship score of 45. Thus, these two aspects are almost equal in my leadership style. I am more likely to lead with emphasis on tasks rather than relationship, but still able to have the significance of relationships within my leading. I believe the assessment is accurate its scoring, as I like to provide more structure and direction to my followers, by organizing their work and giving them definitive responsibilities and instructions. However, I also consider myself to be a warm leader who can motivating and encourage followers while also building up confidence and trust. It is important for a leader to be able to have a balance of both technical and relationship skill. As a primarily introverted person, I shy away from extraversion which can deter my people and communication skills. While I do not lack interpersonal and social (people) skills, these areas to consider for improvement. To be an effective leader, one must be able to communicate well within small and large groups. An effective leader must have effective social judgement skills. While I do not lack self-confidence or the other traits that are needed for great leaders, I do realize the need to enhance my communication skills significantly to become a greater leader. Ways to enhance and develop my communication and social skills as leader are to be more self-aware, to know and understand different audiences and their communication needs, to be clear and specific in communication efforts, and interpret body language. To be self- aware is to recognize and understand one’s beliefs, values, strength and weaknesses. By knowing and understanding my areas of needed improvement, I am becoming more self-aware and I can progress in the areas of weaknesses. Self-aware also means being in tune with surrounding and being able to analyze and understand my part in different situations. Before taking the StrengthsFinder® assessment I didn’t know what type of leader I was, but I felt I had leadership traits that I could not describe. After answering several questions from the Clifton StrengthsFinder® 2.0, I found out my top five strengths. These strengths consist of individualization, arranger, learner, input and responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to go over my top five strengths to talk about which four domains of leadership these strengths fall under, how class material is applied, and the actions to best utilize my strengths.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.
For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide. The results indicated the top five themes for me were input, learner, responsibility, maximizer and arranger. I believe the evaluation offered an accurate assessment of my strengths. The input theme states my mind is like a sponge, soaking up information. As a lifelong learner, the second theme is also, correct. I have a quest for knowledge about things that interest me. I am responsible, in my job and life. As a maximizer, I focus on long term goals and strive toward excellence. As a nurse, working in an environment of change, the arranger strength in my personality allows me to adapt easily and figure out the best way to accomplish tasks (Strengths, 2012).
The first assessment I completed was very eye opening for me as a leader. As expected, my score for the overall potential of my leadership was on the higher end of the scale because of my background and amount of experience I have in leadership positions. This assessment portrayed a very accurate depiction of my overall leadership potential because I have always placed emphasis on being very good at what I do while working hard to not follow a path that did not work the first time.
The outcomes of the two assessments along with my own self-awareness give me plenty to think about. How can I better use my strengths to become a more effective leader, and what can I do to ensure that I am working on my shortcomings to continue
Conclusion: This tool helped me in understanding my leadership score, and affirming that I am a strong but self-focused personality, who builds networks for personal gain and takes least interest in the achievements of others for preventing wastage of time. After understanding the theory behind both the trait and skill approach, I was eager to evaluate and reflect on my own leadership traits. It was interesting to see how the trait approach allowed me to better understand whether or not I have certain traits considered to be important for leadership, while skills approach allowed me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses in the technical, human and conceptual skills. I fall into a unique, more introverted and innovative personality type. Generally speaking, leaders are often expected to be extroverts. That seems to be the societal ideal. Well I guess I’ll start off this paper by being outright honest. I have never done this type of self-assessment exercise. So I’ll start this paper off with what exactly this type of self-assessment is. These types of self-assessments are meant to help show the individual (me) where my strengths lie and also where my weaknesses are as well so that I may try and lean on my strengths while improving on my own shortcomings. Essentially the Johari Window four regions model that we learned about is a great tool for this assessment. The first region is also known as the open area, which essentially means that this is what is known by the person about him/herself and is also know by others. The second region is known as the blind area in which this is information unknown by the individual but is known by others. Which could be behaviors that an individual does but does not realize that they are doing them. The third window is known as the hidden area. This area is essentially information that only you know about yourself and others do not. The fourth area is known as the unknown area. It’s known as that because this is information that you and others do not know about you. It’s when you take a look at these four areas and see your strengths and/or weaknesses are at and if you allow yourself to become open to feedback you then can improve on your own shortcomings and become a better leader.
