The exercise of evaluating my leadership skills by using the Seven Habits Profile tool, I have been able to understand the areas that form my strength as well as weaknesses. Seek First to Understand: Good
I score good in being sensitive to the feelings of others, and see many examples of myself helping others in the time of need. However, I do not take interest in the professional benefits of others, and try to ignore participating wherever someone is to earn some formal gain.
8. Synergize: Good
I am a creative person when it comes to finding new solutions and ways. I believe this adds to my strengths again, as creativity is an innate skill, which takes any person quite high in professional success. I do not take much interest in listening to others, however, I often do fake listening in order to secure friendship with them. I think more about achieving personal gain.
9. Sharpen the Saw: Very Good
I score the best in being active in growing my self-awareness. I also take interest in entertaining myself time to time, without simply focusing on monotonous work and boring activities.
Conclusion: This tool helped me in understanding my leadership score, and affirming that I am a strong but self-focused personality, who builds networks for personal gain and takes least interest in the achievements of others for preventing wastage of time. Strengths Finder 2.0 uses an online assessment to evaluate the individuals unique talents by having the taker rate how they view a particular question in 20 seconds or less (Rath, 2007). After taking the assessment, my five strengths were determined to be achiever, maximizer, input, arranger, and relator (Gallup StrengthsFinder, 2012).
I was excited to take the Gallup Strengths Finder assessment. Although I am more reserved and shy, I typically find myself placed in leadership positions. I am always surprised when people refer to me as a leader but family members and close friends have made me more aware of this personality characteristic. I really enjoyed taking the Gallup Strength Finder assessment and I can see why this would be an assessment growing in popularity across the globe. When I finished the assessment, my results showed that my strengths, from first to last, are developer, empathy, input, connectedness, and restorative.
Assessment tools can be a good start for individuals to assess their leadership characteristics and skills, such as Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristcs and Skills Assessment (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). These tools may be helpful but its accuracy is questionable. The assessment can overestimate or underestimate an individual’s skills since it is a self-subjective administered assessment that is biased towards the taker. An overconfident person may perceive their skills highly and an under confident person may have low results.

The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.
I was not significantly surprised at my results of the Personal Inventory Assessment (PIA). My personal results indicated that I have a healthy balance of patience, competitiveness, and engagement when it comes to measuring my personality (Personal Inventory Assessments, 2016). Over the course of my career I have developed my leadership skills, along with my level of self-awareness, to understand the need to approach my work as a collaborative effort and not a self-fulfilling journey. The assignment for week four is to assess and review results from the Authentic Leadership Self Assessment Questionnaire. The ALQ was created to provide a means to assess the parameters of authentic leadership and to allow for opinion on the behaviors that encompass Authentic Leadership Style (Northouse, 2013). Basically, the questionnaire and the model allows and individual to understand how followers or people perceive leadership authenticity.
Upon receiving this project, I immediately began to worry about a survey that would seek to determine how strong of a leader I would be. I cowered at the fact of coming up with either false information or information I felt was less than perfect. I think that this fear alone, confirms my primary style. My primary style is that of Self-Actualization. Self-Actualized individuals seek to always become all that we can with the talents and knowledge we have. We tend to be creative and like to live in the moment. We bring almost a refreshing perspective to most situations and have a continuous intrinsic drive for self-development. I see this style manifested in myself on a daily basis by my strong desire to always meet new challenges. My motivation for success and coming up with new ideas is completely internal, and when the outlook seems grim to others, I am always the one that sees a positive outcome ahead, through the use of a plan. Although, I am currently a stay at home mom, I would imagine that as a manager that worked outside the home, I would share the same values as I do at home. I am a planner and a “lister”, because I feel that in order to tackle a task, the plan of attack must be clearly laid out and readily available to refer to. My backup thinking style is the Achievement style. I think this is very obvious because I seek to find jobs or take on challenges that will allow me to feel a sense of achievement. I have been known to quit jobs that paid a decent amount, but weren’t allowing me to achieve anything. On several jobs before, I’ve ended each day with a feeling of unimportance or frustration because I felt like the majority of my day had been spent working a job that wasn’t fulfilling or impacting the world. I think the fact that I decided to leave the corporate working world to be a stay at home mom, attests to the fact that I want to feel a sense of achievement in the personal raising of my child. I want to set up a standard for my child to ultimately be able to be a self-actualized person as he grows older.
The first assessment I completed was very eye opening for me as a leader. As expected, my score for the overall potential of my leadership was on the higher end of the scale because of my background and amount of experience I have in leadership positions. This assessment portrayed a very accurate depiction of my overall leadership potential because I have always placed emphasis on being very good at what I do while working hard to not follow a path that did not work the first time.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 2004) has become the cornerstone of leadership and management wisdom. The habits emphasize personal responsibility and personal leadership. There is challenge in living everyday under the guidance of the habits but there is also great benefit as living the habits can influence everything we do in life. I was introduced to Covey’s seven habits through a one day seminar at my workplace several years ago. I learned some of the terminology and a few of the concepts but never really understood the power of the practical application of the habits. Reading the Covey materials has taught me that life is not about all the tasks that I accomplish but instead about accomplishing the tasks that support what is important to me. Covey has taught me that there are elemental components that are applicable across the many roles that I have in my life. Those universal elements are integrity, vision, discipline, and passion. Embracing these ideas has opened my eyes to the endless applications and benefits of living the seven habits.
Other strengths include being self-confident, conscientious, diligent and determined. It was interesting to see my lower scores as well; the lowest average score was sensitivity (3.2), followed closely by self-assuredness and perception and empathy. Although I consider myself sensitive, I believe the sense of sensitivity does not apply as often towards others I interact with. For example, I often speak my mind and voice my opinion with little thought of the consequence or impact it might have on those around me. Thus, sensitivity is not one of my existing strengths, but rather an opportunity for growth. I also found it interesting to note how I scored significantly lower in the human skill, and higher in technical, which I did not expect.
