Life Styles Inventory Circumplex Part I. Personal Thinking Styles Upon receiving this project, I immediately began to worry about a survey that would seek to determine how strong of a leader I would be. I cowered at the fact of coming up with either false information or information I felt was less than perfect. I think that this fear alone, confirms my primary style. My primary style is that of Self-Actualization. Self-Actualized individuals seek to always become all that we can with the talents and knowledge we have. We tend to be creative and like to live in the moment. We bring almost a refreshing perspective to most situations and have a continuous intrinsic drive for self-development. Even though, it can be beneficial to always seek perfection in what you do, it can just as often be limiting. I feel that this style sometimes causes me to place too much undue stress on myself in an attempt to always do things perfectly. It causes me to worry more about everything being correct as opposed to getting the most done that I can. This is a behavior that I would like to change, so I can become more productive. I have a problem weighing out what is most important, Quantity or Quality of production. It also places an enormous amount of pressure on the people around me, as I feel that if I can hold myself up to this standard, others should be able to join me! As a manager, this style could be detrimental because forcing employees to live up to a standard of perfection all the time could create an environment where they feel as though mistakes aren’t allowed. I think employees would be less inclined to ask questions and share concerns or mistakes. I think it would also be hard to get employees to perform up to the level I expect because their personal style may be one that doesn’t aim for the same level of perfection. With my primary and backup styles both being Constructive Styles (based on the LSI Styles Circumplex), they would have a positive impact on an organization or group nearly every time. I think my personal styles and styles of management would help me foster an atmosphere of open-mindedness and flexibility. I think I would bring a goal-oriented approach with creative and innovative ways of achieving them. As a confident and internally motivated manager, it would be fairly easy to empower my group and lead by example. My limiting style could have a lot of positive affects and compliment my other styles, but I think that surely, this style would have to be the most evaluated of the three. According to Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessment, the interpretation of scores for perception of what makes a good leader gave me the following results: good perception of a good leader and the scores for perception of your own ability to lead resulted in low perceived leadership ability for myself (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). I have learned valuable leadership lessons that I can use and even tell others about as well. My goals in life are vast because I want to accomplish a lot in my life and I think leading my life the right way, is important. My goal as of now, is to continue education to receive a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology. I’m motivated to push through more education to reach my goals of becoming successful in psychology because that is what I want in life. I want to help others and be successful in something that makes me happy in life, because it is not about the money. I think knowing about different leadership styles and types will help me in the future with jobs and dealing with employers. My objectives for my future are to eventually graduate my Master’s program, get a job, and to just live a good, happy life. I will attain these things with hard work and determination that I already possess inside of me, I’m very hard on myself at times because I want to do the best I can and I think that will continue to make me successful in life. Two things I will do to continue leadership in my future are one, to obtain an internship or field experience while in my program so I can learn how to lead when I become a professional in the psychology field and two, continue to learn about leadership from my job and volunteer position at MADD.
Leadership is the glue that binds any business together, identifying and understanding your type of leadership style can ultimately aid you in becoming a better leader in your professional career. A successful business cannot function without leadership therefore this is a crucial aspect of internal employee development for businesses striving to stay relevant in a crowded marketplace. In addition to recognizing your leadership style every leader needs to look to them and identify what type of personality they have. By becoming an informed business leader you will gain trust and respect of your team to guide them into the future and maximizing potential growth. Throughout this paper I will identify my leadership style and also personality type and how it has affected my personal career growth. After the completion and reflection of the Clearfit Career Feedback Report, the information that I most resonate with are my tendencies of getting things done, and work style. When working with others, I have always thought that I am they type of person who is persistent with goals and after carefully considering the feedback, I realized that the purpose behind my drive is not that I crave competition, but rather that I enjoy being successful and achieving personal results. This in turn has enabled me the ability to be a good planner and organizer. A good counsellor has to engage in several basic skills of interview including attending behaviour, questioning, encouraging, paraphrasing, summarising, and reflection of feelings (Achanta, 2014). These skills are obtained through practices and supervisions. Therefore, one has to evaluate the micro skills that he or she applies in counselling sessions to gain a better insight of his or her interviewing style, strengths, and limitations. Role-play sessions are considered effective in helping counsellors to practise their micro skills in a variety of situations that they might face (Ivey & Ivey, 2007). This essay is a self-reflection of my interviewing style and the skills that I used in a role-play session which helps me to understand my own strengths and limitations in counselling.
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
Leadership has been defined as mobilizing the workforce towards training organizational goals (Yukl, 1998). The style of the leader is considered to be important in achieving organizational goals and therefore it is important to know your own leadership style as the leadership style will impact on the performance among subordinates (Berson et al., 2001). However this does not mean the leadership style alone will be responsible for all the performance of workers and attainment of goals.
After taking the survey, my results depicted that my primary style of thinking is Affiliative. I find this someone accurate in how I live my life, however there are characteristics I exhibit which diminish my affliliative personality. I find that I am continuously trying to find that perfect relationship or bond with someone. Frankly, I find it hard to make connections with others because my continuous need to be perfect. I find that my closest and best relationships are those who have common values, way of living, and ideals about living life. Once I find a relationship that is trusting, I try to maintain it to my best ability. I am very easy to talk to, however my best communication is with others that have the same values. I express my liking for the other person by showing some generosity and kindness.
I fall into a unique, more introverted and innovative personality type. Generally speaking, leaders are often expected to be extroverts. That seems to be the societal ideal. However, there were some well known introverts such Einstein, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela that obviously were successful leaders and innovators with a mission that suited them. I am motivated to lead if the mission has integrity and is an area of interest to me. Those factors feed my extroverted side. I like to improve systems and processes; one can put specialized projects and problems in front of me or ask me to create a growth opportunity and I will run with it. Our textbook The Art of Leadership by George Manning/Kent Curtis describes the most important traits of leadership as the need for achievement, possessing intelligence, self confidence, initiative, supervisory ability, and decisiveness (Manning). Well I guess I’ll start off this paper by being outright honest. I have never done this type of self-assessment exercise. So I’ll start this paper off with what exactly this type of self-assessment is. These types of self-assessments are meant to help show the individual (me) where my strengths lie and also where my weaknesses are as well so that I may try and lean on my strengths while improving on my own shortcomings. Essentially the Johari Window four regions model that we learned about is a great tool for this assessment. The first region is also known as the open area, which essentially means that this is what is known by the person about him/herself and is also know by others. The second region is known as the blind area in which this is information unknown by the individual but is known by others. Which could be behaviors that an individual does but does not realize that they are doing them. The third window is known as the hidden area. This area is essentially information that only you know about yourself and others do not. The fourth area is known as the unknown area. It’s known as that because this is information that you and others do not know about you. It’s when you take a look at these four areas and see your strengths and/or weaknesses are at and if you allow yourself to become open to feedback you then can improve on your own shortcomings and become a better leader.
Psychology deals with the study of mental processes and a variety of behaviors. In order to fully comprehend ourselves, we need to understand the causes of our behaviors and our outlook on life. Habits and behaviors have positive and negative effects in our life. When we know ourselves and learn about our unique personality, we can develop and pursue goals. Psychology also helps us to understand other people and the differences of people. Gaining this knowledge can improve the relationships and enhance our communication skills. Throughout the psychology course I gained knowledge in various areas, and the topics that impacted me the most included: the introvert, anxiety disorders, stress management, self discipline and how to develop strong relationships.
Personality is the expression of a person’s traits according to ones feelings, mentality and behavior. It involves understanding individuals’ traits such as withdrawal and willpower and how various parts of an individual link together to form personality. Personality expresses itself from within an individual and is comparatively regular throughout in an individual’s life. Different people have different personalities dependent on factors such as environment and genetic composition. Our personality is dependent on the success or failure of our development in the eight stages of life. This is proposed by Erik Erikson. Success in the development stages lead to virtues while the failure leads to malignancies.
