Personal Style of Leadership
In my view, people employ certain traits that differentiate us from our neighbor next door, and leadership is no different. The test produced by the University of Kent in the United Kingdom (University of Kent, n.d.) has developed a process that I feel accurately defines what sort of leader you are based on 50 simple questions. I was not surprised by the results and found them to be quite accurate and expected. I believe that a leader should be able to trust their employees to complete a given task in any method they feel fits their strengths. If a leader must tell the employee what to do and exactly how to do it (authoritarian leadership) then all uniqueness of the employee is lost. Mooney (n.d.) states that collaborative efforts define a participative environment. The leader guides their team to produce an enterprise that is a result of group accomplishment. To do this, they must meld a mix of diverse workers with sometimes conflicting ideas and methods. They work to use these differences to form a team that works efficiently and progresses through challenges both material and personal. Differences is what makes a team great. Without diversity, there would be no out of the box thinking or ideas, items that I feel are very important to successful leadership.
Personal Examples of Participatory Leadership
On projects I have taken the lead on, I have always valued input from other employees. This assumes the fact that the employee is competent in their area, and have a willingness to share ideas with management. Halal and Brown (1981) write that participative management may not only increase productivity and decrease operating costs associated with low morale, it may enhance flexibility through lowering the decision making process to the operational level. This is because the operational level is where the actual work is completed. The manager or supervisor does not always have the best picture of how a process is completed, and they can get lost in the details. The operational level knows the details, thus to work together collaboratively is key. According to Mooney (n.d.) the participative leader empowers others. This is someone who is willing to share the spotlight by giving their employees the opportunity to make major decisions. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
Collaborative leadership is my preferred leadership style. This is because I believe that if everyone contributes and equal participation is encouraged then great things can be achieved. As the cliché saying goes, two heads are better than one. However, an issue I found with collaborative leadership is that not everyone contributes and there is a risk that one person will dominate and not allow others to participate. Often the loudest and opinionated members will contribute while the quieter individuals will generally not contribute, especially if they are not with their friends.
Change had always been a value at Winning Ways, but how change is managed is as important as the substance of the ideas. The implementation of new ideas as well as the mobility of the employees within the company became areas of concern. There was a great deal of confusion regarding company decisions and the purpose of certain initiatives. Although there was a commitment to seeking new management approaches, employees felt as though many ideas were pushed off to the side without ever being considered. Others were implemented, such as teams, but the actual structures were not sustained, creating confusion and tension as employees tried to work within a framework that did not always make sense. Although constant change was once embraced as a vehicle for innovation and increased success, it became increasingly difficult for the employees to follow large shifts. While change can create progress, it can also reflect a lack of focus and/or signify a lack of clear interest in a strategy or approach. In order for changes to be effective, they have to be clear and be implemented in a way that allows for their evaluation. Furthermore, as the company continued to hire from the outside, current employees found themselves isolated with no opportunity for upward mobility. New hires often had higher levels of education as compared to older workers who provided experience, were committed to the company, and had a strong interest in learning. Because people often feel out of the loop, it would be wise for Winning Ways to introduce employee involvement programs. For example, participative management allows for joint decision making in which subordinates share decision-making power with their supervisors (Robbins & Judge, 2012). By becoming an informed business leader you will gain trust and respect of your team to guide them into the future and maximizing potential growth. I used the collaborative principle of leadership during the freestanding paper tower building challenge. We were given minimal supplies; just paper, scissors and sellotape and we had to construct the highest tower. We were required to spend 10 minutes deciding upon the best strategy and plan before we were allowed to start building. Once the 10 minutes were up, we had to implement the plan through evenly distributed jobs. I tried to be as inclusive as possible and everyone shared an idea, then collectively, we decided upon the best idea. Once we had decided upon one plan, other people chipped in suggesting ways to alter the plan to improve it. For this scenario, collaborative leadership was the best approach. As mentioned, the first step is building trusting relationships. Trust, after all, is at the core of collaboration and without trusting relationships collaboration could not take place. In the infancy of collaboration leaders need to walk the talk and be the first among the collaborative team to trust. Doing so creates an environment of collective genius because leaders ensure the consideration of alternative viewpoints in discussions. In seeking a diversity of inputs leaders naturally encourage the participation of all members of the collaborative team. This inclusion allows for more creativity and a much more dynamic result. Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. This has been a learning curve for me to understand the different managing styles and leadership characteristics of people. One of the managers whom I worked under, was the lead in a government project which also happened to be my last project before I took a break for continuing my studies, is a person I admire till date. I learned several life lessons in addition to the technical subject associated with the industry. This paper demonstrates the leadership styles exhibited by my manager with suitable examples.
This paper describes about my leadership strengths and areas for growth/future study. It also included how these qualities are used in my daily work routine, self-assessment results and a brief explanation on Individual style in leadership.
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
