Organizational Analysis Experience The shadowing experience allows for an opportunity to observe a person within their professional position while witnessing the person in their natural environment. The person shadowing can apply knowledge learned to the actual study. In the organizational analysis experience, Mr. Joshua Bourgeois (personal communication, October 4, 2017) works for Children’s Medical Center Plano since July 2015 as the Senior Director of Nursing and Patient Family Services, the author will explore observations, reflections and communications as noted in the interview on October 4, 2017.

Bourgeois in this role as senior director of nursing left a positive impression in the qualities that a leader at this would possess in this position. The leadership in this role should be an effective communicator, strong interpersonal skills, collaborative skills and executive strategies. He exhibited many of these qualities in his interactions with both staff he managed and to upper management level as well. My leadership style is transformational leadership which is to inspire and motivate followers through interpersonal relationships (Sullivan, 2012). It is effective leadership with each team member working toward a common goal and not letting personal self-interest become the focus (Sullivan, 2012). My goal is to motivate the members to be accountable and focus on the goal of the organization and make a positive impact in the community. When the manager’s leadership interpersonal skills are effective, it impacts employees in a positive manner which leads to more productive team work and more positive work environment. For example, helping a team member with a difficult assignment or relieving them for a break. Transformational leaderships work towards a common goal, usually the mission of the hospital which seeks to serve its clients in a professional and compassionate manner which, therefore reinforces this type of leadership. It appears to be a position that works with nursing in many different facets and problem solve crisis which is very intriguing and enlightening. The position provides the opportunity to positive represent the company within the organization and in the community that it serves. At this time, my experience does not reflect the skills necessary to fulfill the position. The position requires a Masters of Science in Nursing, managerial experience, strong interpersonal skills and financial management. The Senior Director position has to construct a financial budget of staffing needs for the hospital, interpersonal skills with upper management and financial donors, present public speeches to the hospital, outside organizations and to the community. On November 17th, 2015 I had an observation clinical shadowing a Registered Nurse in Case Management. Case management is a side of nursing that is not brought up very often. We started off the shift in the nurse’s office. Morgan, the nurse, had a meeting to attend at 9:00am, so we stayed in her office to get organized for the day.
The leadership clinical preceptor that I have had the opportunity to work with throughout the semester considers herself to be a transformational leader (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014). The preceptor displays transformational leadership behavior characteristics such as showing charisma, inspiring and motivating the unit, viewing each employee as an individual (Yoder-Wise, 2011). For example, she makes an effort to get to know each employee individually by gaining knowledge about their personal lives such as likes, dislikes, hobbies, and family life front the point of hiring the employee (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014). She also promotes and encourages her unit employees to function as a team not as individuals (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014).
My style of leadership according to the quiz by Cherry (n.d.) is participative leadership which is a type of leadership that engages the members of the team to participate in decision making and problem solving while the leader makes the final judgment in the deliberation process. This style of leadership allows members who are experts in their fields provide input to reach a more effective and accurate decision. This fits exactly into my leadership style. I always believed that in every aspect there is a greater or lesser person than you are, so, why not focus on the best in others and tap on their expertise in knowledge or skill to get the best results.
...ram, I have also learned that it takes a combination of leadership styles and taking scenarios case by case to perform as an effective leader. My preferences would be a combination of transformational and transactional leadership. Since I work in processing, the transactional part of my leadership will have to be there, but I would strive to add leading with integrity, a shared vision, and being humble among staff members. I hold myself accountable just as I would with other team members. I understand that this approach will not always work, because situations will change and call for different types of leadership, but for the most part a combination of transactional and transformational leadership would be the most effective in the majority of situations at work.

Definitions of reflection vary depending on the discipline of the author. Having reviewed the literature, Bulman (2008, p.2), a nurse, defines it as “reviewing an experience from practice so that it may be described, analysed, evaluated and used to inform and change future practice”. It is a personal process requiring honesty, openness, self-awareness, courage and a willingness to act on criticism. It acknowledges that feelings and emotions influence actions. Critical reflection involves in depth examination and questioning of personal, social, historical, cultural and political assumptions and perspectives that are embedded in actions. It is an active process enabling one to make sense of events, situations and actions that occur in the workplace (Oelofsen, 2012). It transforms a situation in which there is confusion and doubt to one that is clear and coherent (Dewey, 2010).
