Introduction In this assignment, I will endeavour to answer two main questions; “what is my career direction and why?”, and, “what personal skills, attributes and competencies do I need to develop?”. I will do this by first creating a personal SWOT analysis which will help identify areas of my personality and skills that could be improved. Following this, I will outline and justify my general career direction and where I aim to be in the near and long-term future. I will then develop an action plan for 2018 showing my plans for personal development including theories, models and concepts around the areas that I plan to develop. The areas that I will plan to develop will be taken from the outcome of my personal SWOT analysis. Attached to my personal journal will be my own CV and a covering letter that I could use for a prospective employer in the area that I would like my career to proceed to. This is a very similar matrix but rather than looking at importance and urgency, it looks at impact and effort. This matrix is described on MindTools.com as, “useful, because we rarely have time to complete all of the tasks and projects on our wish lists. When we use the matrix to choose activities intelligently, we can spend more of our time on the high-value activities that keep us moving forwards” (https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newHTE_95.htm 2017). This matrix is ideal for narrowing down tasks and sub-tasks to work out which ones to carry out first in order to have the most positive impact and make the biggest impression to colleagues and the business. Needs assessments are imperative to the success of a project. They are an essential part of the planning process. A need assessment guides the administrators as they define the terms of the project. A needs assessment is defined as, “a systematic approach to studying the state of knowledge, ability, interest, or attitude of a defined audience or group involving a particular subject” (McCawley, 2009, p. 3). An effective needs assessment provides insight, information, is objective, and assists in identifying gaps in services.

This reflective essay will critically review my personal and professional skills that I am less confident in whilst in practise, which is essential for communication and developing effective relationships with others in an organization and even for personal development. The skills identified for improvement was highlighted in a skills audit for communication and effective relationships. A SWOT analysis was carried out to focus on the skills recognised, where finally an action plan was made to address how to improve the skills, what the challenges would be to develop them and how it is beneficial. - Some elements of a plan that perhaps I would engage in are internal trainings regarding effective listening, communication, and organization as well as external seminars, courses and readings to continue to develop me both professionally and personally.
The SWOT analysis is a useful tool for identifying our personal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to our plans and goals. According to a “Fuel My Motivation” article (2010), this analysis considers internal influences that can positively or negatively affect our ability to achieve our goals. The internal factors are our strengths and weaknesses. Also considered are opportunities and threats, which are external influences that can have a positive or negative impact on the ability to achieve our goals. I will share how the self-assessment instruments and self-exercises in this course have contributed to assessing and understanding my strengths and weaknesses. I will also discuss techniques I will use to leverage my strengths and understand my weaknesses. In addition, I will consider opportunities that I can take advantage of and the threats that can possibly impede my progress.
In this report, I will reflect on my professional development throughout this module, from when I started in September, to now. According to Beausaert et al. (2011), ‘the art of self-evaluation is an integral element of reflection and involves critical insight into understanding one 's strengths and limitations’. Therefore, my aim is to identify my learning needs and to recognise my personal skills and capabilities, as well as identifying areas of my skill set that need to be refreshed or extended to stand out in the competitive job market. By doing this, I hope to demonstrate knowledge of the skills that I have gained during this module.
The individual development plan is a roadmap for the individual to delineate realistic goals, activities, and timeframe and success indicators to meet these goals (Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science, 2012). This plan provides motivation and it demands follow up and reflection on what I have learned (ACHNAS, 2012). Also, it is not an evaluation plan; it contains preparation and continuous feedback (U.S. Office of Personnel Management Organization). This plan includes education, training, developmental activities to get the qualities that I need as leader to meet the IDP goals (OPM, 2005). My major professor is a great resource to guide me in creating an effective plan (Conn et al.,
On the basis of the identified needs, we can set goals on when to develop those skills, what are our intended results and the strategies to achieve them. My personal and professional development plan on the basis of the identified development needs is as follows:
Personal development experts will tell you this: you have to set goals, divide tasks into sub tasks, prioritize tasks, write journals and have a positive attitude in spite of setbacks.
The personal plan has enabled me to track myself on my developmental changes that are important for my achievement of set goals. Planning has also allowed me to keep track of all the steps that I will need to acquire skills and knowledge. I have also been able to see that if I continue in my current method I will not achieve all of my goals and through techniques such as SWOT analysis I have identified these areas and begun to create methods to fix this problem. The basic purpose of this essay is to point out my personal and professional skill development because these two areas are interwoven.
The first step of career management process is self-assessment. Self-assessment is refers to the employees using some information that help them to decide which career they really interested to pursue, ability, skills, and behavioural tendencies. According to Allen (2005), self-assessment is a process to identify skills, abilities, knowledge of the employees.
