Leadership is essentially the ability to motivate. An effective leader can motivate others toward reaching a common goal. Leaders are different than managers in that leaders inspire others to do the work needed while managers generally tend to manage the tasks associated with completing the goal. - In my own experiences, I have been both a leader and a manager in my professional life and find that leading can be difficult. Inspiring others to get on the same page and work together toward the same goal has its own challenges. It is much easier to manage the actual tasks associated with the project or the goal than it is to get buy in from others to complete those tasks. - A very strong, yet controversial, individual who has been used as a primary example of an effective leader is Adolf Hitler. Though the things he led his armies to do were despicable, he was able to motivate, create a sense of ownership among the armies, and instilled a strong sense of urgency to believe in his vision. - Leading by example: Effective leaders know they are always being watched and are comfortable with being looked to as a role model. Pitching in where needed, being an active part of the team, demonstrating the values and traits expected, and actually doing the work others do to understand it are all aspects of leading by example (Yoskovitz, 2007). - An experience I've had with leading by example was when I was given a position in a middle management role to lead others who had actually been doing the job longer than I had. In order to gain respect and to effectively lead, I had to "get my hands dirty". I spent large amounts of time with each employee to learn what they did, how long they'd been doing it and the pain points they experienced... ... middle of paper ... ...ecision-making assist someone with become more technically competent in that aspects of a that individual?s job may require them to use decision-making with their employees as well as problem-solving with challenges that may arise along the path toward goal completion. - Strengthening skills is a matter of both professional and personal development. Seeking and practicing leadership skills in any field, such as administration and finance, will assist with the continued development of the technical competence needed for the positions as well as the skills needed to be an effective role model and motivator. - Some elements of a plan that perhaps I would engage in are internal trainings regarding effective listening, communication, and organization as well as external seminars, courses and readings to continue to develop me both professionally and personally.
Anyone can teach others from leading by example. Showing others what you can accomplish establishes confidence in others to try out their own dreams, wishes, and goals. A great example of leading by example is Gus, Clark, and Richie in the movie The Benchwarmers. These men meet Nelson, a stereotypical nerd that is bullied by baseball jocks every day just because he wants to play with them. This little boy inspires the men to show others that everyone should have the same opportunity to play baseball, no matter the skill level.
Ramsey, R. (2006). Lead follow or get out of the way: How to be a more effective leader in
Leaders should lead by example. What a leader does and how they do it, serves as an example for others to follow. A leader’s behavior and actions are an important and effective way to influence the behavior of the people the lead. Leaders must treat other with dignity and respect. Leaders take responsibility for their actions, maintain their integrity by doing the right things and develop personable and commutative vision for their organizations. Leaders instill a sense of discipline; enforce organizational standards of the organization and do not turn a blind eye or overlook problems.
“In order to be a good leader, there are two things to remember. Lead from the Front and always set the Example. From these two leadership principles, everything else will fall into place.”
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I had many issues doing this throughout my project because I am only one person and I can’t be everywhere at once. Thusly made being a leader a drudgery. But I had an incredible set of adults guiding me along the way, who taught me that being a leader was not doing everything myself, being a leader
I generally perceive myself as a quiet leader, someone who leads by example. I demonstrated leadership during my experience in the People to People program and Rutgers Biz Ed. The People to People program took place at Harvard University. It was a week long program taught us leadership qualities, how to prepare for college admissions, and learn how to serve our community. During the time I was in the program I participated in team work activities such as, rock climbing. The activity was done to show that we trusted our team to hold us up and for us to encourage others to climb higher than they thought could be possible.
Another example of leading by example is Paul the apostle who authored most of the New Testament. In Philippians chapter three and throughout the scriptures, Paul suffered and went through many trials as a Christian; however, he continued to persevere in his pursuit of the high calling in Christ Jesus. Furthermore, he encouraged the body of Christ to be like him and never give up. He told the church that he did not make it on his own, and the tribulation that lay behind and ahead are the worth calling for the prize of the upward call is in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3: 12-15) Leaders who understand the biblical concept of example would do the right thing at the time with the help of God. Additionally they should never be too big that they forget they came from small beginnings. (Zechariah 4:10) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. God had a vision, and a picture when he created man. God implanted a dream in man to dream big. Habakkuk 2:2 writes to make the vision plain on paper so that a runner can carry the correct message. The leader must write a vision so that employees can carry it out. An organizational structure that lacks a visionary leader is doomed fail. The people will soon lose sight of the purpose and eventually develop a lackadaisical attitude. The Psalmist David provides multiple examples on the storms of life and how to get through
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate and inspire others (Gill, 2006). It is therefore defined as a process whereby a leader influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2013). A leader has to make a decision for something to happen and provide his followers with clear direction (Rost et al, 1991). It will evoke feelings of challenge, excitement and involvement for the followers to proceed with the task (Gill, 2006).
Leaders lead. They lead by example, by demonstrating and living out organizational values, and by being seen. A good leader will never ask a teammate to do something they are not willing to do. Leaders also clearly understand the central purpose of their organization and ensure it is crystal clear to every member of the team...and they are relentless in pursuing it.
One very important aspect of a great leader is to lead by example. Any person in a position to guide others cannot ask the team to do one thing and act in the complete opposite way. This is a sure way to show that the leader has a need to show power and quickly loose respect from those who should be learning from him or her. Being a role model is importan...
"A leader is an individual (or, rarely, a set of individuals) who significantly affects the thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors of a significant number of individuals” (Gardner, Howard 2012). An essential part of a leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence people to follow their lead. Leaders are both men and women who have the ability to influence others in a community, control situations, connect with others and persuade others to follow them or the goals they define. To be a good leader one must set a good example and make correct decisions for difficult choices. I myself am implementing leadership skills into my every day life. Leadership skills are all around us. They can be applied to any situation where one may be required to take the lead. This can be
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
According to Shockley and Zalabak (2009) "Leadership is a process of guiding individuals, groups, and entire organization in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals.Leadership is like mapping out where you need to go to win". A Leader is a person who has a strong personality and who has an ability to manage people and work. He is also the person who is able to direct people .Usually a leaders has a lot of attributes that
