Introduction
What does it mean to be an effective supervisor? Before taking this class, I thought that if a supervisor is able get their employees to work effectively, and efficiently, then the person is an effective supervisor. I didn’t realize until taking this class that supervisors do so much more. After learning more about the other tasks supervisors do like planning, being effective listeners, and motivating employees, I have a better understanding of effective supervision. I am aware that I have had supervisory experiences. I have thought of someone who was a great supervisor and a bad supervisor.
My Supervisory Experiences
One supervisory experience happened when I was a special events intern for the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. I had little experience about supervising others or events, until I interned at the Chamber. If the vendors had communicated with the CEO or administration, then they could have gotten misinformation. It was best to have one person in charge of the Health Fair who had updated information and knew all the logistics of it. This is why I believe a unity of command was acceptable for this situation. With that said, the vendors only communicated with me. We communicated through emails and phone calls. I did a good job because they only contacted me with their questions and I was able to give them my full attention. There was no confusion of who was in charge of Health Fair.
My manager noticed my capability of being responsible and having the ability to supervise others. I gained more confidence in myself from this experience. Since I did so well in this situation, I was able to organize multiple events and the same time.
