Introduction
What does it mean to be an effective supervisor? Before taking this class, I thought that if a supervisor is able get their employees to work effectively, and efficiently, then the person is an effective supervisor. I didn’t realize until taking this class that supervisors do so much more. After learning more about the other tasks supervisors do like planning, being effective listeners, and motivating employees, I have a better understanding of effective supervision. I am aware that I have had supervisory experiences. I have thought of someone who was a great supervisor and a bad supervisor.
My Supervisory Experiences
One supervisory experience happened when I was a special events intern for the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. I had little experience about supervising others or events, until I interned at the Chamber. The only management experience I had were front desk receptionist duties; for example, answering the phone, writing ad’s, and press releases. I had been interning for only a few weeks

If the vendors had communicated with the CEO or administration, then they could have gotten misinformation. It was best to have one person in charge of the Health Fair who had updated information and knew all the logistics of it. This is why I believe a unity of command was acceptable for this situation. With that said, the vendors only communicated with me. We communicated through emails and phone calls. I did a good job because they only contacted me with their questions and I was able to give them my full attention. There was no confusion of who was in charge of Health Fair.
My manager noticed my capability of being responsible and having the ability to supervise others. I gained more confidence in myself from this experience. Since I did so well in this situation, I was able to organize multiple events and the same time.
Technology
As now it can be concluded that to make a supervision session effective it is essential to have a deep understanding of these facts and theories. Characteristics of both supervisor and supervisee are equally important. As supervisors must know their roles and responsibilities at the same time, supervisee should have interest towards reflective practice. Maintaining a good supervisory relationship will be useful to analyse the problems. If there are any signs of underperformance seen in the supervisee, the supervisor can approach them to sort out the matter before it causes
It is imperative for supervisors to focus on what is required in order for his/her employees to accomplish their job. They must be supportive of their employees and provide continual feedback on their job performance .Supervisor need to include their employees when making changes that effect they way they perform their jobs or finding new way to do things that were problematic. Supervisors should give their employees more responsibly to make them feel more valued and powerful. There is also a major need for promotion, pay increase and compensation system (educational reimbursement, vacation incentives etc.
Ms. Geis feels that to be an effective leader one must demonstrate with a high level of confidence, “even if I’m unsure of myself, I have to be ready to stand by my decision and carry it out.” Although, she also stated a competent supervisor must also be able to accept when they are wrong. Ms. Geis provides supervision for 15 direct care workers in the programs and finds “That’s a lot of different viewpoints and perspectives to sort through.” Therefore, she finds difficult people are not easy to work with. From an administrate role, she states, “You can not let it consumes you and affect you negatively.” Ms. Geis feels that to be an effective manager when working with complex individuals one must learn how to use their strengths and adapt the work environment. “You find what they are really good at and place them in the best role that uses their strong points.”
of the most important and challenging aspects in being a supervisor and leading within any organization is the assessment and professional development planning of supervisees. There are several models, methods and sources a supervisor can chose from in completing this task. When teacher receive regular feedback from supervisors their satisfaction with their job performance is increased (Glickman, 2014). Direct assistance from supervisor to teacher is a vital component when it comes to achieving school objectives, mission and vision statements and school success (Glickman, 2014). Clinical Supervision One method of conduction direct assistance to a teacher is through clinical supervision.
Management made mistakes in its predictions at a few different points throughout this case. Firstly, upper management did not appear to take concerns from a lower-level supervisor seriously. First-level supervisors are often times the only individuals within the supervisory chain of command who the employees have a personal relationship with (Fallon & McConnell, 2007). The employees felt comfortable enough with their first-level supervisor to report these union related activities, and their report should have at a minimum been considered as a viable possibility. It appears that upper-level management was so out of tune with its workforce that they did not initially consider unionization activities as a possibility.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.

When I was working in the hospital, I had a supervisor who did not quite understand what it took to be a leader. It felt as if she was part of the team rather than the leader of the team. She would gossip with her subordinates about other employees. There had been a time when I heard her call one of her employees an idiot when he was in the next room. She would also play favorites with the workers who would gossip with her. This created a division among her workers.
After participating in the learning opportunities throughout this semester, I believe I have grown as a potential supervisor in numerous ways. Upon reflecting on the readings, discussions, and activities throughout the course, my original answers to the four essential course questions would reflect the additional insight that I’ve gained relating to supervision. What are the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor? My original response to this question recognized that supervisors have the responsibility of ensuring that duties are performed properly, that the safety of personnel is protected, and that expectations are communicated to employees.
What makes an effective supervisor? During my Personal Learning and Thinking Skills modules I have completed a lot of different modules each different in their own way and each is importantly effective. These modules included things such as learning when and why mind maps can be used effectively, SCAMPER which is a process in which a number of questions are asked and another module was Belbins Self Perception which is a question with a selection of answers and you have 10 points, you have to divide these 10 points between 5 answers that you feel show how you operate as a supervisor or manager. So the question is what makes an effective supervisor?
2/15/2017: Arrived on site. Two men on site collapsing tin roof sheets into interior of building. No demolition has occurred, to date. Mr. Charlie Fanning was observing, while sitting in his vehicle. I introduced myself and explained the purpose of my visit. He had his city permits available, but was unaware of State requirements. I told him at present he was out of compliance with Regulation 21. He asked what he needed to do to get right with the State. I outlined the steps he needed to take to come into compliance. While I took photos of structure, he contacted John Hatchett of (EMTEC). EMTEC is an environmental consulting firm John told me he would send Daniel Foster out to gather suspect samples from site. I gave Mr. Fanning
In order to be an acceptable leader and get the greater out of all of your employees, you need to have a judgment on their powers and artistic demands. You also need to have a fair set of assumptions and goals. Have Faith In Yourself One of the worst things you can do as a supervisor is to disbelief your own capabilities. If you're unfamiliar with supervising others, remember that you will apparently make some blunders along the measures, but that does not mean you are not a good leader.
In addition, I've been responsible for planning and executing an array of events, such as awards ceremonies, benefits and health fairs, and employee
My supervisors are my go to people with any questions or needs that I have and without them I do not have a clue what I would do. This just goes to show how important they are in my internship. Between the three supervisions I see myself between administrative and supportive. I like the duties that an administrative supervisor takes on as well as a supportive supervisor does.
